Official Singles Chart Top 40

i've stopped listening to the charts because it like listening to a now album on repeat

Can someone tell me how these charts work? Last week 'Please,please,please' was still in top 10, this week it's disappeared completely to be replaced by 'bed chem'. Confused.

I like the somewhat 'refreshed' chart but it doesn't happen often enough and still doesn't inspire me to re-arrange it into my personal version (gave up on doing that some 32 years ago -yep,i'm well old!). why couldn’t we have die with a smile at number 1 instead? sure, it’s not the most forward-thinking thing in the world, but gaga and bruno deliver great vocal performances and great chemistry, it’s kinda old-school, and i would much rather this spent 8 weeks at number 1 over sabrina carpenter. but hey, the latter’s music for the masses, and that sells nowadays i guess

Where do I even begin? Still can’t believe Liam Payne is dead, especially when he was only 31. I’ve never been a massive fan of 1D but I’m still in shock over this news, and the boys’ tributes to him were heartbreaking especially zayn & niall’s 😭 

Thought I'd create an account on here as I check the charts every week despite them being pretty stagnant. I'm not even the biggest fan of modern day music, and I'm into 70s, 80s and 90s. Favourite genres are rock, britpop, synth-pop, new wave and madchester, I do like more such as reggae and 90s rap. I see that some people on here do their own personal charts. The Monsters are beyond desperate at this point. Like their idol, they'll cling to anyone or anything if it meant she got another #1 out of it. They can FORCE this song on the public and up the charts all they like, but it won't change a thing. She'll still be a flop solo wise and her recent movie is getting laughed out of theatres. Poor thing.

The Charts in Short 18/10/24

Man, what a week for events in the news industry. There's been a whole heap of wacky stuff that's occurred in the past 7 days that I can't even begin to decipher. But to sum up how it's gone down, England have a new manager to try and make them play better football in the name of Thomas Tuchel, a guy who played his part in grinding Bayern Munich's 11-year winning streak to a halt (bodes well then). Someone leaked a whole catalogue of Pokemon-related info out into the world and it made the 13th of October seem a lot more crazy than it actually was (I'm never giving Typhlosion any respect ever again after this). And if BBC News is anything to go by, it seems we may be nearing the climax of this whole Israel-related fiasco. Key word is 'seems'. Oh, and Liam from One Direction is dead. Yes, I know it's shocking to hear about his untimely collapse, the whole world is with your family, RIP 💜 etc., but his solo career didn't do him any favours. Then again, I had a funny feeling he might've been the first to kick the bucket. If he was 91, anyway. So yeah, that's a bit depressing to hear about.

But you're not here for that. You're here for THE GREAT ACR CLEAROUT OF 2024. Anyone who's anyone has suffered at the hands of the chart rules, and you'll never have to hear about Chase & Status, BL3SS, one portion of Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, or Adam Port ever again. (Except I forgot Adam's been let off the hook for now, and I've only just realised it because he's just gone Top 10. I hate myself.) For now. Until maybe January, when the chart goes to s***. In other news, Charli XCX stuck a bunch of remixes out, and it's caused your usual bedlam (took you long enough to top the album chart), Ariana Grande-powered Sympathy is a knife the latest song to inject lime-green fluids in our eardrums, Ms. Carpenter still can't be touched at the summit, with Bed Chem now adding itself to the Top 10 at Please Please Please's expense, Die With A Smile seems to be on a mission to make me lament just why Lady Gaga is dragging her artistry down a ditch (Joker 2 included), Gracie Abrams dropped a Vevo version of her massive hit that no one cares for and now it's done crazy numbers, and KSI is somehow still relevant. Good for him, but you've got to wonder how many people are listening for the LOLZ at this point. Oh, and the only other new hit is from former BLACKPINK starlet JENNIE, but MANTRA is so generic in comparison to Lady BRAT over there that I'm pretty sure the only reason this has reached No.37 is due to the capital letter schtick everyone's doing.

Also Paul Heaton was robbed. Then again, I'm glad James Blunt didn't get there either meaning he doesn't have to legally change his name to Blunty McBluntface. More stuff to talk about next week.

Whether you like the songs that are going on ACR or not, I think it’s fair to say that a clearout was certainly needed.

That being said, it did come at an unfortunate time for ‘Guess’ since it got a boost from the album. I’m kind of neutral on ‘Move’ avoiding since I’m still not impressed by the original but I did think the remix with Camila was way better.

Surprised that ‘Mantra’ held up well enough to get a Top 40 debut. I prefer ‘Moonlit Floor’ by LISA which came out a couple of weeks ago but this is a nice song nonetheless. Congrats to JENNIE! 😊

better late than never - brat is finally a number 1 album!! and with the remix album helping it get there, i’ll share my thoughts on that.

firstly, let’s state the obvious. the 365 remix with shygirl is finally out, and i’ve yearned for this since june, it’s one of the most adrenaline-fueled things to come from this year. that drop is insane. the only gripe i have with it is that it’s too short - eight more bars and a not-so-abrupt ending on the final drop would have put it on par with the original for me. but as it stands, FANTASTIC song.

sympathy is a knife with ariana was a big surprise - like billie, i didn’t know how she’d fit on it, but she absolutely kills it here, complete with a little bit of filthiness in the outro that really sold it for me. everything is romantic is a more lofi version of the original, but it’s still great - and if you haven’t already, please check out caroline’s album from last year, it’s fantastic. i might say something stupid is better than the original; it starts as an ambient piece, but gradually turns into a crescendoing indie-rock ballad and it’s just beautiful. club classics is the most underground-sounding song here, utilising a garage beat, a great verse from bb trickz (who i never heard of before this), and a pinch of 365. and this might be a hot take but i prefer the remixes of rewind, apple and b2b too!

the only remixes that i felt were duds on this thing were von dutch, which doesn’t carry as much oomph as the original, and i found addison rae to be quite obnoxious on the track, and mean girls, which really didn’t need to be slowed-down and with a different beat. the latter is one of those songs where she should have stuck to the original beat, like she did on 360, guess, spring breakers and girl so confusing (top 3 on the remix album btw!)

overall, even if i think the original is really hard to beat, charli still assembled a great remix album, but this project really depends on what you enjoyed the most about brat. but even then, more brat was just what we needed 💚

Did we really have to give ‘Thick Of It’ a second boost week though? The craziest part is that I found out earlier in the week that there are 11 different writers on it… 😐

‘Sympathy Is A Knife’ is fine but it was never one of my favourite tracks on the album and the Ariana remix is a slight improvement. I wasn’t expecting ‘Apple’ to survive but I’m pleased it avoided ACR!

Shame ‘365’ didn’t make it in the end as it’s one of the best songs Charli’s released this year.

Hey, at least ‘BRAT’ finally made it to #1 on the albums chart! Better late than never.

So ‘Taste’ has officially become the longest-running #1 hit of the year with eight weeks at the summit. It’s a good song but I stand by what I said last week that it’s time for a different artist to take the top spot. 

Glad to see ‘Bed Chem’ replace ‘Please Please Please’. It’s a massive upgrade and the former is one of the best tracks on Sabrina’s album! The only thing better would’ve been for ‘Juno’ to debut and I’m convinced it eventually will.

For as much as I still love ‘Espresso’, it had an incredibly successful run so it was definitely time for it to be hit by ACR.

before i get into my usual shenanigans, i just wanna share some words on liam payne.

when i got an instagram dm from a friend telling me he died, my jaw fell to the floor. that has got to be the biggest shock ive had in my dms all year. and when he mentioned him falling from his hotel floor, i thought it was a freak accident, like what happened to sophie… no, it was worse. he presumably offed himself under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

it honestly broke me a little inside. one direction were my childhood, and it feels like a part of my childhood has gone now too. we were hoping for a reunion, but that’s now out the window. my tastes may change, and i may not listen to 1d much anymore, but i’ll forever hold that nostalgia. and the most heartbreaking part of all this that his 7yo kid that he shares with cheryl will have been peacefully dreaming at night, only to wake up to horrifying news that his dad is gone forever.

all in all, this is a reminder to take mental health more seriously. the man opened up about his suicidal tendencies in 2023. if you know anyone who is feeling the same way he felt, please, PLEASE talk to them and listen to them. be there for the ones you love. and once again, rest in peace to liam payne. 🕊️

Terribly sad news about Liam Payne on Wednesday night. He always came across as a really nice guy in interviews and I liked most of his solo music after One Direction.

He passed away far too young and I feel the most for his seven-year-old son Bear right now, although my thoughts are of course with all of his family, friends and former bandmates. May he rest in peace 🙏
