Nobody including the chart company themselves noted the milestone of the top 40 at no 40.

Burl Ives had a gap of a massive 60 years between top 40’s.

Vera Lynn was a 63 year gap.

Sam Ryder is very unlucky on another note.

Yeah, I think Sam Ryder might have made it (maybe even last week) if it hadn't been a platform-limited release.

Hi.

This you calculated wrong! There are 78 Christmas songs in this weeks U.K. Top 100, with a massive 90% of the Top 40 being Christmas songs. Sorry to assume, but I am guessing that you are saying that 'Stick Season' and the two recordings of 'Stay Another Day' are Christmas songs. They aren't. 'Stay Another Day' is a song about someone who has committed suicide and is saying "what if we had another day together?". The East 17 song was the U.K. Christmas Number 1 in 1994, but it's as Christmassy as 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)', 'Two Little Boys' or 'Mull Of Kintyre / Girls' School'!! 'Stick Season' has the word 'Christmas' in it, but so does Travis' 'Writing To Reach You', and that isn't a Christmas song either. Thank you.

Piran

1

Oh, I just used Buzzjack as a source for this. I haven't compiled any of it.

'Stay Another Day' isn't a Christmas song in itself, but it only returns to the chart because of Christmas hence why they counted it as a holiday hit.

Forget everything else on this chart... Wow look at 2000 Miles 😍 highest Christmas peak by a long margin for The Pretenders at this time of year since the year it came out. Great to see this underrated gem getting some love

I had to log in especially so I could reply! It's miles better than every other song in the chart this week and should be a Christmas No.1 at some point... if there was any justice! Such a great, talented band. I'm quite fussy with commercial chart music so there are only a handful of songs I like in the chart, even at Christmas. But I'm glad to see The Waitresses back in the chart with Christmas Wrapping too.

Hey. My 2 and a half month hiatus is over. I don't have any jokes today. I just wanted to say how much of a pleasure it's been to contribute to the comment section over the past 6 months. If it weren't for the OCC allowing people outside of the Disqus circle to participate, I probably wouldn't be here right now. So thanks for the support.

And yes, I do get some backlash from how awful the new rating system is. You don't know depression until you see a negative number next to your post. That may explain why I haven't commented since October. In my opinion, they should just scrap it altogether. But I do hope to be a regular contributor next year. HOPEFULLY.

And if any of you were wondering what my personal favourite songs of the year are, well...

Idk what everybody else here thinks, but I actually like Jorja Smith’s cover of ‘Stay Another Day’ more than East 17’s original!

Shame the former didn’t make it into the Top 10 this year.

Can’t wait for nearly the entire chart to be re-entries next week! 😅

I haven’t even minded the Christmas music itself, but we definitely need a return to normality.

A

Alfie

1

Honestly, I'm half expecting statues to be built of Noah Kahan, Jack Harlow and Tate McRae for remaining in this week's "Top 40".

can't believe I used to call the former "Noah Kanah" on a regular basis :/

Easily done. Anyway, it looks like he'll be earning his first #1 single next week! 😊

I'm quite nervous about it, tbh. What will we see, Chasing Cars? The Killers? I'm really really hoping that vinyl SINGLES continue to pick up in 2024 because I'd love to see the charts looking more like they did when records used to climb, peak, fall. And were available in limited edition picture sleeves that you'd rush to buy before only a plain disco sleeve was available – or the limited edition paper labels of the 1980s. For anyone who didn't live through that – it was magical!

avatar

Piran

Crazy to think that this is the final chart of the year already. To everybody here, I’ve absolutely loved hearing your thoughts on the charts over the past 12 months and I hope 2024 brings you all the absolute best of you and your loved ones! ❤️

A

Alfie

1

Yup.

If the current Spotify Top 50 is anything to go by, then the charts will be absolutely massacred by Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Not that it's a problem or anything, but I have no clue how THAT song is doing so well.

Anyways, BRING ON 2024!!! 🤟🏻🤟🏼🤟🏽🤟🏾🤟🏿

avatar

Piran

Definitely wouldn't be against Sophie Ellis-Bextor getting a hit to begin 2024!

bet*

I'm just glad that the fad of random songs getting a Top 40 chance this year is continuing onwards.

The likes of Florence Welch and Bastille must've been running round their houses in glee when they heard Jack Saunders utter their names for once.
