hey merry xmas mates!  too bad we can't check any replies on disqus esp. for those of us that can't be here each wk...

& that's awesome about mariah!!  back in the 90s on the billboard hot 100 chart, you all should've seen how often she would be in the top 10!  she had hit after hit after hit!  & back in the day, when you had a big hit, it'd be forever 'til it fell out of the top 10.  i have lots of fond memories of mariah dominating the hot 100 top 10 week after week after week.

& same with george michael...back during this time back in 1987, his 'faith' album was fast becoming a huge success!  & all thoughout 1988 he was hands down 1 of the biggest recording acts here in the states.  he was up there with prince, michael jackson, madonna, whitney, janet, bon jovi, def leppard and the list goes on.  my fave musical year of the 80s!!  everyone had a hit that year over here ;)

Am happy for MARIAH back at number 1 again in the US but was even more excited to see 2 weeks ago BRENDA LEE finally reaching the top spot!! So well deserved and she has been waiting long enough for it: over 60 years!!

Have a wonderful day my friend...

I so wanted Sooty to be the Christmas #1. It would of been quite sootable in keeping with the past novelty records to achieve the Christmas crown. Poor Lil Sooty not even a blip on the radar. Oh well Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 to everyone!

Hope you have a wonderful time  😊 .

And of course congratulations to wham even though I really wanted the Pogues to claim the number 1 spot!

Thanks, Thierry!!  Merry Christmas to you likewise!!   I wasn´t expecting Wham to break their record of 1 week at the top spot... Both, USA & England had surprises this year, Mariah didn´t catch the # 1 spot, and in both countries a song got the # 1 for 2 weeks for the first time, in here Wham, and in there Brenda Lee...

I love Brenda Lee and was so happy when she finally reached the number 1 spot in the US: about time!! But Mariah got it back this week...

Have a wonderful day my friend...

Yeah... I spoke too early on AIWFCIY... good for Mariah... but Best for Brenda Lee and her memorable and remarkable 2 weeks at the top spot!!

Sooooo very happy for Wham´s "Last Christmas" being the # 1 Christmas song for the very first time!! Yay!!

Like it or loathe it, the Christmas Chart is a fascinating one! In a couple of weeks it's also interesting to see what has bounced back into the Top 100. Great for Wham! The b-side 'Everything She Wants' is a fantastic funky tune which helped the single upon it's initial release in the 1980s and got airplay on it's own merit.
Surprised to see no sign of Sleaford Mods who were contenders with their Shelter charity single 'West End Girls'. It is probably in the vinyl chart this week, I've yet to check.
It's nice to see Paul McCartney's 'Wonderful Christmastime' in the chart. For me it captures the vibes so well.

Why have a Top 40 AND Top 100 chart list if both are the same for the 40 first numbers?

#s 20, 29 and 31 should be marked as new (in Top 40, not in Top 100) because it is their first appearance in the Top 40.

20. (Nw) Cher - DJ Play a Christmas Song (03:29)

29. (Nw) Creator Universe - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday

31. (Nw) Laufey - Winter Wonderland (02:12)

And 35 + 36 are re-entries in Top 40, not in Top 100.

35. (Re) Darlene Love - Christmas [Baby Please Come Home] (02:40)
36. (Re) Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song [Merry Christmas To You] (03:12)

I make it just 8 non-Christmas records in the top 40, with half of them forming the bottom 4. So just 4 'normal' records in the top 36. Many more in the top 75 though.

So good to see Cher in the top 20, making her the oldest woman to have a UK top 20 hit, and breaking her own record as the second oldest woman to have a top 40, beaten only by Tina Turner.

Probably the oldest living with a studio album top 5?

A long way short of Vera Lynn, but they were hardly new material!

This is a listening chart not a sales one! The sooner more weight is given to sales the better to stop this nonsense from happening year after year. Downloads of mp3s should continue to count as a full sale, but each year streams should count half as much as the previous year perhaps.

So happy for Laufey on landing her first Top 40 hit in the UK. Such an underrated artist! 😁

avatar

Piran

7

Cher has now earned a Top 40 hit in every decade from the 1960s to the 2020s! The first artist ever to land a new song in the region for seven decades in a row.

This also becomes her highest charting song since ‘The Music’s No Good Without You’ more than 22 years ago. Truly a timeless icon! 😊

Bluey G

1

This is a great fact, I did not know this! So that puts her ahead of Cliff Richard I think?

Yeah, Cliff Richards did it for every decade from the 50s to the 00s (six consecutive decades).

I was personally hoping for The Pogues to do it in tribute of Shane and Kirsty, so it’s a real shame that ‘Fairytale Of New York’ isn’t even in the Top 5.

That being said, congratulations to Wham! on finally making it to Christmas Number One for the first time ever! Definitely worthy of the honour given how ‘Last Christmas’ is one of the best-selling songs of all-time in the UK, not just among the festive hits. George Michael would’ve been so pleased about this. RIP to him! 🙏

I’m just glad we finally have a change after five years in a row of LadBaby and their sausage roll parodies.
