It's "São Paulo", not "Sao Paolo". "Paolo" is Italian, not Portuguese.

Diacritics are important too.

As someone who agrees people are playing/streaming them, people should still be aloud to speak about what they don't like.

well, this is probably one of the last noteworthy weeks of the charts this year before the christmas takeover. i'm always conflicted about how heavily christmas songs affect the chart and sometimes i think something should be done to give other songs a chance but then again it is a fair representation of what songs are popular around the time - i can't act like i don't do the same as everyone else and shuffle xmas spotify playlists/ask alexa to play xmas music around this time of year.

either way, 2 top 10 new entries in late november is fun to see, especially when i really enjoy both. it just irks me when songs & artists i love get shoved down the charts when they'd be much higher without xmas songs.

Chart Review 22/11/24

Ignore what the top of this comment says. There isn't a review this week, or the next, obviously because I'm on holiday in the Canary Islands wondering if this is the cause of why my homework assignments are going AWOL on me. I was also coming home from a massive water park called Aqualand, so I clearly couldn't have written this review in time. But in short, it's a brilliant day for guitar music, as Linkin Park's new album casually thrusts it's three eligible hits up the chart, and joining them in Top 10 heaven is Sam Fender, a.k.a. Newcastle's answer to Bruce Springsteen, but with added saxophone. It's about time he didn't turn out to be a one-hit wonder.

Anyways, the Christmas songs are taking over as Wham! and Brenda Lee join Mariah to clog up Alexa playlists across the land. See you next time when Kendrick Lamar's surprise new album he dropped today (definitely not because he's doing the next Super Bowl) malfunctions the rap world for the rest of 2024.

Also Shawn Mendes is a fraud.

AMAZING TIER:

Chappell Roan [36] (Thanks ACR. Not.), Linkin Park [10], Sam Fender [4] (Can you tell this lad is something special yet?), Shaboozey [33]

GREAT TIER:

Chappell Roan [23], Linkin Park [21], Adam Port/Stryv/OMG GO TO ACR ALREADY [15], Brenda Lee [34] (GrandMother's done it again folks.)

GOOD TIER:

Sabrina Carpenter [12], Linkin Park [22], Mariah Carey [17], Billie Eilish [19], Tate McRae [28], Sabrina Carpenter [24]

OK TIER:

Gracie Abrams [37], ROSÉ & Bruno Mars [3], Gracie Abrams [1], Addison Rae [20], Wham! [16], Teddy Swims [5], Billie Eilish [9], Lady Gaga [29], Tyler, The Creator [39]

EH TIER:

Gracie Abrams [27], Myles Smith [14], Tate McRae [8] (Album's out the same day as Mr. Fender. Riot.), Noah Kahan [38], Gigi Perez [2], Sabrina Carpenter [7], KSI ft. Trippie Redd [11]

DISLIKE TIER:

Myles Smith [32], Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars [18], Teddy Swims [6] (I don't get you sometimes y'know Teddy.), The Kid LAROI [31], The Weeknd/Playboi Carti [13]

BAD TIER:

Hozier [40], JIN [25] (Why couldn't this debut in the low-30s to at least live up to the midweeks?), cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe [35]

AWFUL TIER:

Benson Boone [26], Teddy Swims [30]

NEWIES AND ALL THAT:

Sam Fender - People Watching [4] (That's his place in my Fab 50 secured then. SorryBaby Lasagna.)

Tate McRae - 2 hands [8] (I haven't listened to it properly yet, but from what I've heard, I can confirm her previous single should've cracked the Top 10, not this.)

Linkin Park - Two Faced [22] (Sadly not as good as the other two nu-metal barnstormers in this chart, due to Emily Armstrong spotting a spider on her foot midway through recording this song. Still brill though.)

Sabrina Carpenter - Juno [24] (Another album cut. At least it's better than Bed Chem.)

JIN - Running Wild [25] (And in other news, JIN continues his quest to become the 3rd Most Popular Solo Member of BTS by releasing this right lame-o of a track. Can you tell I hate K-POP?)

PAWSA/Adventures of Stevie V - Dirty Cash (Money Talks) [44] (Not as good as the original, but at least he tried. Then again, if Joel Corry had remixed this it'd be Top 10 for MONTHS.)

Tyler, The Creator - Sticky [64] (Features GloRilla, Sexxy Red and Lil Wayne, so that explains it's more dominant presence in America. Why Tyler sounds like Pharrell Williams here is anyone's guess.)

Imogen Heap - Headlock [74] (Of all the chart flops from the creative have that was 2006 to re-peak because of TikTok, I would not have put money on this little do-hicky. Then again, it only charted on 12" vinyl back then, so that not Imogen's fault.)

Wizkid - Kese (Dance) [78] (African artists are in the mud again lads. Turns out 2022-23 was just a massive fad and we can all go back to moaning as to why this guy can't get hits.)

Tom Grennan - It Can't Be Christmas [83] (This year's Amazon Christmas front-runner, and it shows. Because it worked SO WELL for Sam Ryder's career in the past 12 months. 🤪)

The Marías - No One Noticed [88] (Here's someone who sounds like Billie Eilish leading a group of Atlanta-based strummers through the realms of nice, simple, relaxing vibes. Blame TikTok for this though, and not because this is 6 Music material.)

Juice WRLD/Nicki Minaj - AGATS2 (Insecure) [89] (The 2Pac of the modern era is still having posthumous releases. And Nicki Minaj is about as involved in the making of this song as I was, to be honest.)

Glorilla - WATCHU KNO ABOUT ME [93] (And speaking of Glo, here she is finally breaking the duldrums of the Billboard chart and striking out for success over here. Just a shame she's Nicki Minaj Part 712.)

i don’t think 6music ever added the marías to their playlist this year? i could be wrong ofc. but still, great song and parent album imo, even if it didn’t likely reach the ears of the 6music dads out there

What's particularly tedious about the annual "Christmas takeover", aside from it taking up an ever higher percentage of the chart, is it isn't even our own.

The generic, curated Spotify playlists, which will supply the vast majority of these streams (rather than anyone actually picking out any of these songs by choice, heaven forbid), will be stuffed with Fifties and Sixties US hits that never even did anything over here, presumably because Spotify is based over there. Which means the seasonal soundtrack is now increasingly dominated by them – other than the ever-more lopsided volume of streams going to Last Christmas (hitting its 100th chart week this week), which even Mariah hasn't been able to touch the last couple of years... something that's got boring in its own right, but that's another story.

Things like even the biggest glam-era British classics (Slade, Wizzard, Mud etc) can barely get a look-in these last 6 or 7 years. Whereas mid-century transatlantic stuff like the songs from Brenda Lee (unseen in the Top 40 from 1963-2017), Bobby Helms (never a hit before 2017, his only previous chart appearances of any sort were in 1957-58), Andy Williams (only a downland-era hit in 2007, then streaming post-2017), Dean Martin (first nudged the Top 40 in the last week of 2019) and the Ronettes (ditto) are now routinely leading the pack trailing behind Wham! and Mariah.

It's like we've suddenly lost our own Christmas tradition, and instead are now drowning in some ersatz nostalgia for a 1950s American Christmas we never actually had.

Oh, and it looks like even Mr Brightside (no.90 in its 437th chart appearance) is about to get turfed out of the Top 100 next week, after its mandated 47 annual weeks of continuous residency. Will await its inevitable return in five weeks' time for the next 47.

M

mrstarling

As soon as Tiktok rose the Christmas songs did to.. also you have to stream a Spotify song for a certain number of seconds to count as a stream, so I don't believe that's just streams for shuffle.

avatar

Velvet Android

1

Well that's the thing, surely – people aren't flicking through changing the festive tracks every few seconds to find one they want; they're just going "Alexa, play me Christmas songs" then letting the playlist provide aural festive wallpaper for the next 2 hours with no further input.

M

mrstarling

0

Yeah but I still don't think that'll make up so many streams to push this up a ton

avatar

itsnoodleszn_

1

as someone who streams on the regular, i absolutely agree with most of the christmas songs coming back now being driven by ready-made playlists and algorithms, and you made a fantastic point with the smart speakers in another comment. that could also be why the christmas takeover is a top 40 takeover now compared to what it was like in the 2010s with mild impact, because people will wanna play holiday music automatically. retail has especially been at it - i’ve walked into quite a few shops this past week and christmas music has played at every one. poor employees lol.

and especially agree with the whole “they don’t pick” thing. i curate my own playlists instead of listening to spotify’s, and this led me to pick the christmas songs i actually wanted to hear this year and put that playlist on shuffle when feeling festive. i think everyone should follow suit tbh

avatar

i've always done it that way. yes, there'll be the old favourites on there but i love searching out and playing out to my colleagues (in a large, well known company) - christmas/seasonal songs old and new.

What a brilliant analysis of what's happen in the past few years. Especially the repeat appearance of these US Christmas hits from the 50s and 60's.  Couldn't have put it better.

Wouldn't it be fascinating if we could see what the chart looked like with just the Spotify streaming data removed? I'm sure you're right about the effect of their very US centric curated playlists skewing the chart.

I'm not against old Christmas songs appearing in the chart, but they should be old UK hits.

My favourite of all time is Greg Lake's I Believe in Father Christmas, Which would have been number 1 in 1975 if it wasn't for Bohemian Rhapsody!

It’s refreshing to see two big debuts in the Top 10 after the recent stagnancy. It’s even better that I think both of them are very good.

Sam’s raw emotion and general delivery in ‘People Watching’ is incredibly compelling, and the driving instrumentation here only magnifies that, even if I still prefer ‘Seventeen Going Under’. As for Tate, I’m genuinely stunned that ‘2 Hands’ did this much better than ‘It’s Ok I’m Ok’ in its opening week. Once again, she absolutely aced it with that music video too.

I’m pleasantly surprised about ‘Juno’ overtaking ‘Espresso’. I love both songs but I think the former is easily the best track on the album!

Sadly, my two favourite songs of the week are among the dropouts, those being ‘Last Night’s Mascara’ and ‘Mantra’. The former got done so dirty having only spent one week in the chart… 😔

Looks like the Christmas takeover is well and truly underway. I’ll try to keep things interesting by coming up with some cool rankdowns and lists over the next few weeks when the charts inevitably come to a standstill, as well as releasing my personal Year-End lists in the next two weeks.

As for the festive music, I hope this will be finally be the year that ‘Underneath The Tree’ can go Top 10 and I absolutely love seeing Laufey's amazing 'Winter Wonderland' cover back in the chart already! 😊

M

Don't you ever get bored of the same Christmas songs every year?

It’s such a shame that ‘I’ll Stand By You’ didn't re-enter after all, especially when it was doing so well in the First Look and midweek update. Not only is it one of Girls Aloud’s best and most iconic songs, but it’s an absolutely beautiful tribute to the late Sarah Harding. Hope she’s resting in peace 🕊

Good to see Linkin Park have a sizeable impact this week. Chester Bennington is obviously irreplaceable, but Emily Armstrong sounds impressive throughout the project amid controversy and I think the single choices have been really strong.

Disappointed that FLO don’t have any tracks in the chart today but congratulations to them on getting a Top 3 album with their debut release! If you’re into 90s R&B girl groups such as Destiny’s Child or TLC, then this trio are definitely worth checking out. :)
