Little did The Killers know when they were writing Mr Brightside in the pre-digital music era that the song would transcend decades, formats and playlists to become the stuff of legend on the UK Official Chart.
Originally released in 2003 with a 500 CD single run via UK indie record label Lizard King, Mr Brightside picked up steam following the release of 2004’s Number 3 single Somebody Told Me (and the release of an updated mix) – catapulting it into the Official Singles Chart at Number 10 in May 2004, still its highest position to date, and only remaining in the Top 100 for four weeks initially before dropping out.
The indie-pop anthem birthed on The Killers' debut album Hot Fuss played the long game instead, and would go on to become a bona fide classic in the streaming age.

Written by band members Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, Mr Brightside crossed the 1 million UK sales mark in December 2018, some 15 years after its release. Yet, not only has the indie disco favourite racked up impressive pure sales, it's also the most-streamed song in Official Chart history to have been released in the pre-streaming era (pre-2010).
It's perhaps no surprise then that The Killers' most famous ditty has gone on to become the longest-running hit of all time on the Official Singles Chart. In 2021 the Official Charts Company confirmed that Mr Brightside had become the first track ever to spend a whole five years on chart as it logged its 260th non-consecutive week in the UK rankings. No other song in UK chart history has notched up anywhere near as many weeks in the Official Singles Chart Top 100.
In May 2024, some 20 years after Mr Brightside made its first UK chart appearance, Official Charts announced The Killers' Mr Brightside had overtaken Oasis's classic Wonderful to become officially the UK's biggest song of all time yet to reach Number 1, and the third biggest song of all time overall when sales and streams are combined.
