APPLE
by CHARLI XCX
Apple is the 11th track and fourth surprise hit from Charli xcx's seventh album brat. Not released as a single prior to brat's drop on June 7 2024, the song caught fire online thanks to a TikTok dance that's been followed by everyone from Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones on their Twisters press tours, to Jessica Alba and even a trio of Amish teenagers (!).
Written by Charli herself and her partner, the 1975's George Daniel, producer Lotus IV and songwriter Noonie Bao and produced by xcx, Daniel, Lotus IV and AG Cook, Apple was originally thought up as a way for Charli to channel the essence of her friend and collaborator Caroline Polachek's lyricism and mawkish, ethereal approach to pop music.
Ostensibly about Charli's somewhat-strained relationship with her parents whenever she visits home, Apple's viral dominance very quickly saw the track enter the UK Top 40 for the first time at Number 23 on July 26 2024, becoming the fourth Top 40 single from brat; following von dutch, 360 and the girl, so confusing remix with Lorde.
