It is not the first time that a song is back on chart, but its history is deleted. Girl I'm Gonna Miss You was number two in 1989 - https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/singles-chart/19891022/7501/ But this week it is listed as New Entry and the highest position is number 40. Please fix it !!!

Yes it's clearly a screw-up where whoever entered the song into the database this week has botched the title and missed off the first word, creating a wholly 'new' song. Definitely needs fixing!

Just another 20 days until Halloween folks. I know how excited you are, and you just know I'm in it for the money as well. Then again, all you need to do to upset the public at large these days is to hold a war-torn nation's flag. I can assure you the vitriol will be legendary. Anyways, the chart is as (eclectic/stale/awful/insert any adjective you want) as ever, and not just because Coldplay released an album that was bought by WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE. 237K is just a "little" too far for an album that couldn't be more middle-of-the-road and/or bandwagon-jumping if it had duetted with Charli XCX. More on her next week.

Elsewhere, Sabrina will never leave our braincells, the likes of Public Service Broadcasting, Jake Bugg, Alison Moyet, The Smile, and James Bay realise that releasing new albums on the same day as Chris 'Industry Plant' Martin is a very bad idea, Gigi Perez is now officially noticed by the masses and it's caused your usual furore, and KSI makes his grand return with the kind of song backlash that makes it looks like he just announced he wants to FR3E P4LE5T1NE or whatever. Not that sampling a forgotten hit from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was a bad idea, it's just that he probably shouldn't have hired Trippie Redd to hang out with him on it. Not like anyone can tell though. Even I'm having trouble wondering why he didn't just steal the chorus like a normal person would. Maybe he'd get less opprobrium (harsh criticism).

Oh, and the latest Netflix-related incident to buzzsaw the Top 40 in half is Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, a tale of two people 'annihilating' their mothers from 1989, and it's suddenly resulted in Don't Dream It's Over by Aussie-crooners Crowded House, and Girl I'm Gonna Miss You by the (not real) vocal talents of Milli Vanilli to chart again. Don't ask, OK? You can't go one month in the charts nowadays without some old track gaining a second wind. Anyways, more noodlings from me in seven days time. Because I have better things to do then talk about cassö for the millionth time without gritting my teeth.

AMAZING TIER:

Charli XCX [26] (Whoever The Japanese House is, she's dragged this remix off a cliff.), Chappell Roan [10], Linkin Park [24], Chase & Status ft. Stormzy [7], Shaboozey [27] (I swear he's only in this tier because I haven't heard it in ages.)

GREAT TIER:

Chappell Roan [2], Adam Port/Stryv/This Joke Is Overdone and Tripe [22] (I felt sorry for Adam today.), Charli XCX ft. Billie Eilish [12], Sabrina Carpenter [4]

GOOD TIER:

Billie Eilish [19], Sabrina Carpenter [1], Chappell Roan [13], Linkin Park [38], Tate McRae [28]

OK TIER:

JADE [35], Sabrina Carpenter [5], Sonny Fodera/Jazzy/D.O.D. [8], Milli Vanilli [40] (The only people to win a Grammy and then give it back because they aren't actually the people who won a Grammy.), Billie Eilish [21], Teddy Swims [16], Gracie Abrams [11] (We're really gonna let Taylor Swift's clone get all the glory here?)

EH TIER:

Gigi Perez [6], Addison Rae [15], Coldplay (+ some other chancers) [20], Noah Kahan [39], KSI ft. Trippie Redd [14] (Eh. I've heard worse from him. Lamborghini, anyone?), Myles Smith [29], Ndotz [23], Coldplay [18]

DISLIKE TIER:

Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars [3] (Good for you but not for me), Teddy Swims [32], Crowded House [37] (How this didn't peak any higher than 25 is one of life's great mysteries.), The Kid LAROI [36], The Weeknd/Playboi Carti [17]

BAD TIER:

Hozier [30] (Radio 1 Skip Too Sweet Challenge. 99% Impossible.), Jimin [31], cassö/RAYE/D-Block Europe [34] (Get. Lost. Now.), BL3SS/bbyclose/CamrinWatsin [9]

AWFUL TIER:

Benson Boone [25], Teddy Swims [33]

THE NEW STUFF AND THAT:

KSI ft. Trippie Redd - Thick Of It [14] (Turns out all publicity is good publicity. Just don't end up like Yung Filly, alright?)

Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over [37] (This is who Teddy Swims thinks he is when he makes music. So it's makes sense this song is on equal quality with his work.)

Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm Gonna Miss You [40] (The most famous mimes in history. Besides the real-life ones, obviously.)

Coldplay - ALL MY LOVE [43] (Boring piano ballad. You're not topping The Scientist, so don't bother.)

Milli Vanilli - Blame It On The Rain [47] (It only got as high as 52 back in the day. Listening to this, I can see why.)

Perrie - You Go Your Way [52] (So when is she getting dropped again? Surely it's only a matter of time.)

A$AP Rocky/Imogen Heap/Clams Casino - I Smoked Away My Brain [80] (A mash up of an old song of his from 2011, and another song that no one has heard of. Got that?Because I didn't.)

Taylor Swift - Who's Afraid of Little Old Me? [85] (I saw everyone raving over this and duly agreed with them. More deserving of a spot in the chart than Down Bad, anyway.)

Billie Eilish - L'AMOUR DE MA VIE [96] (The first 3 minutes are your usual snooze, the other two are a precursor to the whole BRAT phemonenon. Not the worst album cut then.)

This is my 100th weekly ranking… and it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

On one hand, 80s music did surprising well with this week with returns for Crowded House and Milli Vanilli effectively from out of nowhere. On the other hand, KSI is normally hit-or-miss for me and ‘Thick Of It’ is sadly a miss.

For those of you getting bored of the chart stagnancy, I guess you’ll be pleased to know that we’re set to have an ACR clearout next week according to the latest update from BuzzJack.

It’s a shame that the last two Little Mix solo singles haven’t debuted very high in the chart. I can understand why ‘Midnight Cowboy’ only just about scraped in as it was just a promotional single, but I thought ‘You Go Your Way’ would hold up a bit better than this… 😔

It’s about time that ‘Austin’ left the Top 40. I don’t mind the song but it definitely got overplayed and it lingered around in the upper region of the chart for a very long time.

‘Prada’ may have returned because of autoplay but I can’t exactly complain since I’m still a big fan of it. I really wish it could’ve gone to #1 back when it was a hit. Hopefully ‘Oscar Winning Tears’ can debut for RAYE in the coming weeks too!

I’m not even surprised that ‘Who’ is back here either at this point…

P

pressy

1

I don't know if it's even possible for OCC to take into account whether a streamed song was only streamed bc of autoplay, but it sets a dangerous precedent when artists and labels know they can get chart placements bc of an algorithm that can very easily be rigged in their favour. We should consider ourselves lucky that the UK doesn't factor radio, that being the reason I've not been following the US charts for the past year, but this feels like a similar concept

I do follow the US charts but I agree that radio shouldn't be included.

Good to see ‘Sailor Song’ finally in the Top 10. LGBTQ+ artists have done incredibly well in pop this year and I’m glad that this trend is crossing over to other genres! 🌈

Hopefully ‘Pink Pony Club’ and ‘Diet Pepsi’ will make it into the region in the coming weeks.

avatar

Piran

7

No disrespect to Sabrina, but we need a new artist at #1. I don’t even mind the songs in the Top 5 right now but it’s felt incredibly stale as of late and it’s time for a change.
