Hi Guys. Anyone know whats happened to Chris Rea's 'Driving home for Christmas'? It doesn't normally disappear early, does it? (last weeks 26).
Geenaaar
So happy there's no Honey G or the Beckham brat in the charts! I hope Honey G gets the hint now that she was a joke act even though she believed in the hype. She can't go back to the recruitment business because she let that go to pot thinking she was going to be the next big thing and buy Sharon Osbourne a plane when Honey G can't even afford the cheapest Ryanair flight. Yes I may be classed as a hater and I only watched the X factor on the Saturday of the big final weekend and was appalled to see her perform the single even tho she was knocked out the show. I had been sick of seeing her ugly mug on the daily mail website. Sick of seeing her moles on her lip jumping about on viral vines and sick of her wearing the same caps which my 19 year old son wears. She's a wannabe who is well past her sell by date, the clothes she wears are hideous, she doesn't have a feminine figure and is rather overweight...yet thinks she is gods gift to rapping when she couldn't wrap a Christmas present. I thought rappers sang on their own experiences in life but she told a reporter that another song has been written for her.
James England
Robbie Williams Love My Life is 55 this week. In the rival Big Top 40 chart the track is at 4. A huge difference in chart positions!
Calum Pk7
and its full of well overplayed and boring songs like hymn for the weekend, dancing on my own, this is what you came for, work, what do you mean?, I hate u I love u and pillowtalk. rubbish tbh. except the ones I already mentioned in other posts, the only really good songs in the 40 were all my friends, no money, perfect strangers and girls like. disappointing tbh. annoying that cheat codes, sigala, neiked and hailee steinfeld didn't make it in :( 2017 can only be better
Calum Pk7
good to see zara Larsson and the chainsmokers in the top 10 of the year but disappointed shawn mendes and fifth harmony missed out, especially the latter as itll be probs the last time they have a hit after camila left ;(
Calum Pk7
bit annoyed by the top 40 of the year. one dance is the official song of 2016 to send you to sleep (15 weeks at no.1 was such a fix) and cheap thrills is so boring and old- as all sia songs seem to get for me after a while. good initially but if they stay in the charts ages like chandelier and cheap thrills I hate them by the end. so annoyed that cheap thrills was 3 escpecially as it didn't get to no.1 7 years is annoying an itapii defo deserved to be ahead of cheap thrills.
Scott
Please support Louisa Johnson and her song, she's very talented!!

Dear OCC: There is a mistake in your database. Frank Sinatra's version of Let It Snow has never charted before, but if you expand his entry in the chart - he is credited with the date for Dean Martin's version.
DS
David Sutton
Dear OCC: Have you missed out Chris Rea? Seems highly strange that he would drop out from number 26 while most other xmas songs are climbing or are stable.
Techfan
Look at my post below for a possible explanation or cause of their mistake. Somebody asked this yesterday.
DS
David Sutton
Missed that (and I see someone pointed out the mistake with Frank and Dean too). Even given the fall in audio streams, still seems odd to me. Well spotted though.
Calum Pk7
I think its been deleted from Spotify that's why I'm not sure but I think
I Am A Stegosaurus
If Olly Murs' new song Years & Years doesn't make the top 100I will be so .
Calum Pk7
its not bad. it has a chance but not a massive one. I will be exactly the same if bad things doesn't make the top 40
I Am A Stegosaurus
It's great to see all the Christmas songs still climbing and stuff, especially Last Christmas but seriously number 1 is STILL Rockabye what a disappointing way to end the year, the fact that's now got more weeks at number 1 than Uptown Funk is all you need to see to find out the charts are fixed and/or streaming service data is fixed. Also I Would Like at 2, it's undoubtedly better than Ain't My Fault but how is it her highest peaking song? Who the f**k buys/streams this generic sexual garbage?
R
riley
tbf, rockabye is still number 1 on the sales chart also, it aint just streaming with this one.
I do however completely agree with you on Zara Larsson. I would like aint bad but i have no idea how it has charted higher than Lush Life which was so big. Also Never forget you was such a good song imo (fav of last year) and that charted lower than this.
Calum Pk7
me. and many, many other people in the uk
I Am A Stegosaurus
Okay, I'll let them off...
I Am A Stegosaurus
Never Forget You was extremely overrated IMO and MNEK's voice is horrible, but I guess that was back when Bieber was spamming the top spots
R
riley
agree to disagree on that one mate as i loved that song! But we can both agree that zara larsson has done worse
I Am A Stegosaurus
I actually like both Lush Life and Girls Like with TT, the one she did with David Guetta is okay but Ain't My Fault is THE WORST. It sounds like the producer was drunk on the day. Her current one, I Would Like is pretty bad too. So yes she has done worse
Calum Pk7
I was expecting this week to be the week the xmas songs fell but maybe ill have to wait for next week. never mind. 4 songs I hope will climb lots in the coming weeks are call on me, September song, you don't know me and bad things. all deserve top 40 places and are great songs.
Calum Pk7
congratulations to clean bandit, sean paul and anne-marie for 8 weeks at no.1 with rockabye! to be honest I would like I would like to be no.1 by now (ha ha see what I did there) and I'm so glad human didn't reach no.1 as I hate that song his voice is rubbish. cant really say I knew who George Michael was until I found out he died- Id heard the name but didn't know who he was (I'm only a teenager). but by reading these comments ive learnt he was in wham! (congrats to them for first top 10 in a while with last Christmas btw), and was a huge loss. rip to him.
but tbh I was a bit disappointed to see the other Christmas songs still so high. annoying that they locked September song and call on me from the top 40 and I'm also so annoyed that bad things dropped from the top 100. its my new fave song and I love Camila's voice. I was a bit sad when i found out she left 5h but tbh shell probs be a massive artist on her own. so excited for camilas album in the summer. and her being on the song is giving mgk the exposure he deserves- hes been making music a while but never had chart success or airplay which bad things has given him finally. bad things is In the top 50 on Spotify now and is improving in sales too so should re-enter quite high next week. I expect it to peak at like 20 or something hopefully higher. its been getting bigger and bigger recently :)
Geenaaar
So pleasurable to read that the dire Honey G didn't even make the Top 100 and is apparently at 149.
I've written some new lyrics for her so here goes
"Coz i'm Honey G....Aint noone slicker....I'm a tracksuit wearing....Window licker"
I do hope you like it, I wish she would get those moles burnt off her face, they dance about when she "sings", I can't say when she raps as she couldn't even rap a present.
May 2017 be Honey G free! Wishing all you music lovers a happy new year!

I can't believe Sharon Osbourne saved her so many times on X Factor when she should've been eliminated at the judges' houses.
FG
Frank Griffin
R.I.P George Michael. He was brilliant and I love his songs. Especially the ones he did when he was with Wham such as I'm your man and Club Tropicana. I think Last Christmas deserves to be in the top 10 at this point. However, I disagree with other Christmas songs being in the top 40.
Sunshine Gal
here in the u.s., his cds are all practically sold out :). he should be making re-entries on the billboard charts within the next couple of wks.
GirlPlz
Taylor and Zane FLOPPED!!!!!!
Geenaaar
So did Cruz Beckham 😉
GirlPlz
Did that even chart? All I heard was that it was possibly going to reach #1. There was so much hype. Where did it chart? No where?
SH
Scott Harris
Yeah, and that campaign to make "Glad All Over" the Christmas #1 didn't exactly work either.
Calum Pk7
they may still climb. its not over yet
James England
Worryingly (if you hate Rockabye, which I do) it is far ahead of any other song on Spotify's streaming charts so it might be number one for another month or so which will give critics of the current streaming/sales chart further ammo to claim the charts is busted. I predict there will be more changes to the top 40, not just the increase streaming sale ratio of 150:1. Personally I think the OCC should not count free streams as part of sales. This seems inherently unfair. Why should anyone stream a song for free and this count to the overall 'sales' figure? 'Paid for' streaming only, surely?
The lack of Careless Whisper breaking the top 40 confirms what I've felt for a long time - the current streaming/sales chart does not favour older artists. In simple terms, any singer/group that had hits before the year 2000 is gonna find it almost impossible to have a top 40 hit in the streaming era. The Stone Roses the only pre-2000 group that have had two top 40 hits this year. I can't think of any other.
The chart demographic is aimed at kids born from 2000 which makes sense - most teenagers (that can afford it) have a mobile phone or tablet and stream and this fits in with my theory that groups/artists having hits before 2000 have almost zero chance now. The millennium 'kids' are not interested in older artists/groups hence why Careless Whisper - one of the most iconic tunes of 1980s any by an artist that sold over 100 million records, and passed away this week (RIP) - is not in the top ten this week nor the top 40! Last Christmas would have charted high irrespective of George Michael's death so that doesn't count.
Geenaaar
The charts aren't like they used to be. I loved growing up watching TOTP on a Thursday evening and then tuning in to radio one on a Sunday tea time but before we discovered R1 we used to sit beside the TV with a cassette recorder and make the family sit in silence while we recorded our favourites. In those days of no downloads, I believe the charts were decided by just the sales of singles, I'm not sure if radio airplay influenced the charts but music was so good back in the 1980's and then as more tv channels were introduced like MTV, music seeed to suffer. The 90's was when I became a fan of rock and metal because 'pop' was pretty much non existent. The quality of music suffered, just in the same way that tv has suffered in quality programming due to excessive channels, music is all non descripts featuring another non descript. I only know the Christmas songs in our charts because they're classics, I've heard Rockabye and hate it! I won't listen to modern stuff now and listen to R2 in the car or CD's
I Am A Stegosaurus
FREE streams are counted? Might as well just stream Years & Years by Olly Murs a billion times to get that in the charts then.
R
riley
tbf tho mate, i see where your coming from, but clean bandit are still number 1 by a long distance on the sales chart also. Unlike Drake, it isnt streaming thats getting this song to number 1
yianang
Two different versions of the same song back to back: Let It Snow Let It Snow Let It Snow by Frank Sinatra is at #93, while the same song sung by his pal Dean Martin is at #94. I'm sure this has happened before, but it's not a frequent phenomenon.
R
RIME
Is something going on with #93 and #94? They're sharing stats but I think one of them is a debut (and the two entries and counting for the single entry's weeks combined, meaning whichever one is the real one has 11 weeks, not 12). Can someone on staff check that?
Techfan
I checked and the Dean Martin entry seems right. It is the Frank Sinatra one that should be a debut. So that one definitely is wrong according OC Singles chart history for him. They need to fix that.
Thomas Sales
The same logic can be applied to Michael Bublé's Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. Do you happen to know what record is currently at #101 and #102? It should by rights be at #99 and #100 and I want to know for the purposes of the charts section of my site. http://www.launchballer.com/reviews/
Techfan
You mean that it should be a debut? The info it has there seems to be right. Did you mean that the two songs at #98 and #100 shouldn't have charted?
I don't know which songs would be at those positions.
Thomas Sales
Deja Vu by J Cole and All I Want for Christmas Is You by Michael Buble are currently #101 and #102. However, I having emailed the bloke who writes UKChartsPlus, he reckons that it is entirely coincidental that those tracks charted adjacently (or near-adjacently) as they were in the Top 200 about thirty places apart.
EW
Ed Wilkinson
Where's Chris Rea's Driving Home For Christmas? Last week it was no. 26 & now it's not in the top 100? Seems very strange that it's disappeared like this.
Painmix King
I agree especially when the majority of Xmas tunes have moved up the chart this week
Techfan
I checked and it fell 44-72 in Sales, but dropped out from #27 in Audio Streams. Unless the latter is a mistake, it's quite possible.
Calum Pk7
i think it might've been deleted from Spotify or something. all I could find was one with a cover art in a different language and a non-existant feature. I may be wrong but it may have been deleted from Spotify hence its fall in streams
I Am A Stegosaurus
Weird but good, that song
Painmix King
Each to there own. I love it!
Techfan
A quick note: glad to see all those new and re-entering Christmas songs. In the U.S. Hot 100 unfortunately except for Pentatonix's Hallelujah and Last Christmas I don't expect any holiday songs to remain unless 3 tracking days for sales and streaming and one for radio were enough for the other songs.
Sunshine Gal
well, will the xmas songs be on the holiday chart and not the main hot 100 one?
Painmix King
I'm very surprised to see the performances of the Xmas songs. I too expected them all to have dropped out of the Top 100 or at least fallen down the chart
Techfan
Well, I checked and it seems many of those sons did pretty well in the Audio Streams chart for the week, better in some cases that non-Xmas songs. In the U.S., X-mas songs haven't done as well in Streaming since in addition to audio streams you also get YouTube videos accounted for, which unfortunately allows the meme phenomena to creep in and make songs related to them bigger than they should be. ;P
Techfan
I'm not sure if there'll be a new Holiday 100. Basically, it would be a chart including Christmas airplay (a whole bunch of radio station played holiday music that day) plus mostly 3 days of streaming and digital sales (Friday to Sunday), except for a few songs such as Pentatonix's Hallelujah and Last Christmas. I think those two would be the most likely to stick around the Hot 100.
Sunshine Gal
so, when will george be re-entering the bb charts? and he should flood the catalog albums chart, right?
Techfan
Hey Sunhine! So this week he'll be re-entering the BB charts. In the Hot 100, I don't know if Careless Whisper and Faith sold and were streamed enough to do so. In the BB 200, Twenty Five should be within the Top 10 and Faith Top 20. Some of his other solo albums and Make It Big! should be further down.
BTW, Joseph's album and single lists for 2016 were posted in the Ask Billboard article today. Happy New Year! ;)
Techfan
So, as expected my Eagles beat those Cowboys! ;) I suspected they'd put Tony Romo for a bit, even though it was just one series. I'm also glad that my Jets at least finished with a win and that your team, even though a wild card, should be a tough team to beat regardless of who they play.
Sunshine Gal
believe me, nobody in america was happier than i was when the cowboys lost. and my bulls and warriors won last night :) can't say the same for my blackhawks...but next game for them will be against the buffalo sabres on thurs. my fave blackhawk, patrick kane, grew up in buffalo and that's his lifelong hockey team. and with the bulls, as long as rajon rondo (who i don't like) doesn't play for us, we'll always win :D. he just has such a negative attitude and plays like he doesn't care. jimmy butler (my fave bull right now) is proving to be a great leader...he had something like 51 pts. yesterday against charlotte.
Piran
Even though I really want to see a new #1 soon, congratulations to Clean Bandit on an eighth week at #1 with 'Rockabye'. It has a strong lead in both the sales & streaming charts right now, so I could see this reaching at least 10 weeks at #1 & maybe far as 12 right now. There's really no other competition in the charts right now that could stop it, except potentially 'I Would Like' by Zara Larsson (which gave her a new personal best on the UK Singles Chart at #2).
I'm also very pleased to see 'Shout Out To My Ex' back in the Top 10 today at #6. Little Mix also have another song, 'Touch', in this region at #4. Also happy that 'Glory Days' went back to being the #1 album in the UK this week. On another note, it was such sad news earlier this week to hear of George Michael's death & I really wish he could've charted at least one solo single in the Top 40 this week. At least 'Last Christmas' could return to the Top 10 this week though!
Also, the official Top 10 songs of the year were...
#1: One Dance
#2: 7 Years
#3: Cheap Thrills
#4: I Took A Pill In Ibiza
#5: This Is What You Came For
#6: Lush Life
#7: Closer
#8: Love Yourself
#9: Work
#10: Can't Stop The Feeling
Thanks for reading this everyone & have a Happy New Year! :)
MS
Mike Sowden
Not forgetting Once Dance has finally left the top 40 after 38 weeks.
Sunshine Gal
alright mate, i'll catch ya next year :D well, i finally got the wham throwbacks up, i got that stupid 'error' on disqus, so i just hopped over to the main article. i never knew wham had a debut album prior to 'make it big'....on their 1st album 'fantastic' they had a single 'bad boys' that peaked @ #60 on the hot 100. next single on the chart would be their #1 hit 'wake me up...', but if they'd never release that debut single, wham would be the 1st uk duo/group to have their debut single go to #1 on the hot 100 :). today, the spice girls are still the only uk group to achieve that.
but looking back on wham's 2nd album run on the chart back in 1985, i couldn't believe they were in the top 10 for 6 mos.!! guess what my fave album was during that time would be? that's right, madonna's 'like a virgin' album ;).
and for the 200 chart on 7/13/1985 the top 10 is actually flooded with uk acts...tears for fears has the #1 album that week with 'songs from the big chair', there's phil collins and annie lennox (eurythmics) @ #10 with 'be yourself tonight'. the summer of 1985, madonna had a big movie and soundtrack 'desperately seeking susan' *tons of fun that summer with madonna on the radio and mtv constantly*...but i def. remember wham back then. wonder what george and andrew thought about all of that back then? ;)
Techfan
It seems the Top 10 songs here where overall better than the corresponding ones for the Hot 100 Year-End, in my opinion. Glad to see #3 and #4 make it, while they placed in the Top 20 in the Hot 100 Year-End. I'll take a look of the rest Official Charts including the rest of the Singles one for the year later and give you my opinion on them.
bubletime
I think you got it mixed up. It was Bad boys that peaked @ #60 on the Hot 100, not Tropicana. Tropicana never dent the Hot 100.
Sunshine Gal
yeah i see it now on wiki, i don't remember anything of their debut album.
bubletime
I didn't know anything about their first album either until Bad Boys was getting some airplay in the US. I believe Bad Boys was the last single released in the US from their first album and by that time, Wham was getting some exposure in the US due to MTV spinning the videos for Bad Boys and Young Guns.
Piran
Good observation! Even though I could only access the Top 40 at the time of me posting my review, I probably would've missed that anyway.
Piran
I'm pleased that both 'Cheap Thrills' & ITAPII made it that high as well. What did surprise me was to see 'Closer' at #7. It appeared in the UK Chart Of The Year than the US one, even though it spent 12 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 & 4 on the Official Chart. It's currently weekly position in each country are #3 for the US & #14 for the UK. I guess the British chart year starts & ends with the calendar year, unlike the American one.
I actually still need to check out the article regarding the full Top 100 Chart Of The Year. ;)
Techfan
Yes, so the OC chart year does seem to follow the calendar year a bit more (it can't possibly be exactly the same, for instance next week's chart will run from Dec. 30 2016 until Jan. 5, 2017 and will count toward 2017). About Closer, had its last five Hot 100 weeks counted toward the 2016 Year-End, it'll probably have been #4 for it.
Piran
Well for 'Closer' to make the Top 10 on both the US & UK Charts Of The Year, considering it was released at the end of July & didn't become a hit in my country until about a month later, that's very impressive! :D
Oh by the way, Official Charts recently posted an article on the Top 40 songs of the year. I'll let you know if I can find the full Top 100 though.
Techfan
As I probably mentioned to you, I do remember heaving heard Wham Rap! (Enjoy What You Do), which reached in the U.K.. Another song you might not remember was Wrap Her Up where he and Elton John sang. That one hit #20 in the Hot 100 and #12 in the OC Singles.
Geenaaar
Did they re release Bad Boys? I remember it really well which would be strange if it only went to #60. Back in 1985 was when we enjoyed what I call proper music that everyone mid 40's remembers so well. I simply do not expect my children to recall music popular at the moment when they are in their forties and it's a shame. Music was such a big part of growing up to me and remembering where I was during the Live Aid concert etc...
I Am A Stegosaurus
Well, you'd be clutching straws if you'd want I Would Like to take Rockabye off the top spot. So I'm clutching at straws.
Piran
Also, regarding 'Rockabye', sales are keeping it at the top as well as streams right now. It actually seems to be performing better than when 'One Dance' got its eighth week at #1.
I never expected 'I Would Like' to pass the peak of 'Lush Life' though.
Calum Pk7
shows how popular zara larssons been this year though, when the third single taken from an album peaks highest. for me all her songs including features have been great :)
bubletime
Yes, they released Bad Boys as a single in late 1983. Back then, a song had to be released as a single in order to for it to chart on the Hot 100. The US audience weren't familiar with who they were then until Wake Me Up Before You Go Go was released in September 1984 and the rest was history.
Sunshine Gal
see, i don't remember all of that...wham's first album was in july of 1983 and mj was the biggest artist in the u.s. during that time. interesting that madonna's debut album was released around the same time, hence my madonna obsession starting ;D
but i think it's great that george michael's musical legacy is much bigger and more eventful than i originally thought. i knew wham was a big success and all, but never knew they did that good :D
Sunshine Gal
when was the elton john one? i do recall 'careless whisper' back then, but too obsessed with madonna that year :P i also can't get over how young george was when he made all that music. he'd be 22 in 1985 when the 'make it big' album was a success and then 24 when he made the 'faith' album. and look what he achieved and without any internet advantages ;)
Sunshine Gal
yeah, i don't recall wham in 1983...mj obviously would dominate the music scene that year. but 'wake me up' was in sept. of 1984?? dang!! i def. remember that vid on mtv! madonna's single 'like a virgin' would be release about 2 mos. later, i immediately bought her album during that time :D
bubletime
You are right. 1983 was all about MJ. No one else was bigger than MJ in 1983. Surprisingly, George and Andrew performed on American Bandstand and Solid Gold in 1983. I never knew.
Sunshine Gal
really? i do remember seeing madonna on american bandstand back then, but i really don't remember wham on that show. and yeah, i remember solid gold back then! :)))!!! i also recall janet jackson on american bandstand before her 'control' album hit it big, but i just knew her as charlene from diff'rent strokes :D
no doubt, george saw all the big artists in the u.s and was prob. very determined to be up there with them :). when you listen to the entire faith album today, *@ least in my opinion* you see all the work he put into that album. same with mj's thriller, when an album is that good and many people like it, it also shows how hard that artist must've worked on it. and george's faith album was also way ahead of the times...listening to it today, i can def. see the difference to the faith album and the current 80s pop sound.
bubletime
Yeah, I remember Madonna on American Bandstand and Solid Gold but had no idea about Wham but apparently we did perform on the shows even before Madonna did.
Sunshine Gal
i keep forgetting you're around my age :D but i never knew they were on those shows...and before madonna? wow, that's going back pretty far back :D cuz madonna would be on american bandstand during her 1st album. right when 'lucky star' would be on heavy mtv rotation is when i bought the album, my very 1st album i ever bought ;)
Piran
Do you think 'I Would Like' can go to #1 then? It's probably my least favourite single of hers, but even then I would still give it a 6/10. 'Lush Life' was one of the best songs of 2016 in my opinion! :)
bubletime
If I remember correctly, Madonna didn't appear on those shows until January 1984 but Wham appeared way back in March 1983, even before the first album came out.
Sunshine Gal
oh i forget when madonna was on, i do remember thinking 'that's the same lady on mtv' :D janet jackson would also be on during that time...but i was too young to know she was mj's sis, i just knew her as charlene on diff'rent strokes :D
Calum Pk7
i hope so. when I first heard it I didn't think it would be her best single, but its shocked everyone and got her highest position. and its grown on me too, its now one of my favourite songs along with starving, sexual and bad things.
Steve
Rockabye is somehow only the 37th biggest seller/downloaded/streamed song of 2016!!!! How on Earth is that calculated?
Piran
'I Would Like' might grow on me even more with a few listens then. I hear on the radio almost every day now!
I love all of those other songs that you mentioned here by the way. :)
Piran
The reason 'Rockabye' only just made the Top 40 on the 2016 Chart Of The Year is because it was released so late. It was released on 21 October & didn't even hit #1 until 11 November.
I expect to chart much higher in the 2017 Chart Of The Year though. I think the new chart formula is now 1 sale = 150 streams.
bubletime
I sort of remember Janet Jackson on American Bandstand. I think it was sometime in 1983. I knew she was MJ's younger sister. I mean MJ was huge in 1983 so of course his family members were brought up quite frequent on TV, radio and magazines.
Sunshine Gal
it was hard for me to view mj as a person back in 1983 :D i thought of him as some type of superhero or military general. i gotta say, his look back then was way ahead of the times...who would think to dress in a sparkly military style? but i do vaguely recall janet on american bandstand around that time...i think whitney also was on there a couple yrs later.
oh great news, george's music is still sold out everywhere here :D i wonder if any of his albums will be re-certified by the riaa anytime soon?
Calum Pk7
:) yeah I would like grows more on me every day. its probs my 2nd fave song behind bad things
Calum Pk7
yes! good! itll re-enter next week though because It climbed to 3 on Spotify on new years eve so streams will give it a boost to like 25 next week especially as all the xmas songs will hopefully drop out. annoying though- I don't like one dance any more- haven't since may.
MS
Mike Sowden
Yes very probably but the weeks will now be non-consecutive. So the torch now passes to the Chainsmokers and Halsey 'Closer' as the record with the most consecutive weeks in the chart at 22.
Calum Pk7
ur right I didn't really think of it in that way
bubletime
It's nice to see 2 of George's classic singles Careless Whisper and Faith re-entering the Hot 100 this week, in addition to Last Christmas moving up to #41 from #50 last week.
Sunshine Gal
yeah i saw that!! did you see the catalog albums chart? 'faith' is #4 and '25' is #5...i have a feeling more of his albums will be flooding the chart.
bubletime
I did not see the catalog albums chart. I did see the Top 200 albums where 25 returns to #12 and Faith #18.
Sunshine Gal
well, you better get your ar$e over to the catalog albums chart and check out the top 10 ;) esp. the top 5 :)
bubletime
LOL
bubletime
#4, 5, 17 & 36.
Sunshine Gal
yep! and once the xmas albums fall out of the top 10, i'm very confident george will move up in the top 10. or @ least remain in the top 10 for a long time.
Sunshine Gal
hey what's up mates! this week in honor of george michael i'm gonna be doing past throwbacks on wham and their biggest success over here, their album 'make it big'. those of you that might've missed my other batch of george u.s. billboard chart throwbacks, go to the article 'george michael dies @ 53', basically doing a retrospect on his past billboard hot 100 singles chart and 200 albums chart runs...still an incredible momentum! ok mates, i'll have the wham throwbacks up in just a lil' bit ;)
Sunshine Gal
hot 100 chart *'make it big' singles*
1. 'wake me up before you go-go' enters on 9/8/1984 @ #80-59-48-41-32-26-13-6-5-4-1. *spends 3 wks @ #1*
2. 'careless whisper' enters on 12/22/1984 @ #37!-37-23-20-10-5-3-3-1. *spends 3 wks @ #1 and will become hot 100's #1 song of the year*
3. 'freedom' enters on 7/27/1985 @ #43-37-32-27-19-14-12-8-6-3. *final peak*
4. 'everything she wants' enters on 3/23/1985 @ #60-46-38-30-19-16-11-8-4-1. *spends 2 wks @ #1*
ok, so during this time, it's very customary to debut in the bottom part of the chart and climb your way up...the hot 100 during this time is predominantly radio airplay. so, the 1st single debuts @ the bottom portion and climbs up the chart and becomes a top 10 staple *upbeat pop songs are the usual make-up of the top 10 and top 20 entries, esp. during this time*. wham's off to a pretty good start so far ;)
the 2nd single debuts right in the top 40! the top 40, even today, is steady radio airplay...that'd be like debuting in the top 10 today :). so, that also means, esp. for the 1st week, u.s. radio is quickly adding the song to their playlists and increasing the amt. of plays (spins) and is getting more airplay @ a more rapid pace than the debut single did. flies right into the top 10 after about a month and is able to be a top 20 staple for many mos.
2 more top 3 singles follow...so nothing technically unique or history making (that'll come later in 1987 when george becomes a solo artist in the u.s. ;)), but still a fantastic run for wham! i was 9 during this time and too young for them back then, but i def. remember them on the radio (esp. careless whisper) and on mtv. ok, next up, a look back @ their highly successful 'make it big' album :)
Sunshine Gal
200 chart:
'make it big' enters on 1/5/1985 @ #19. will spend 2mos. climbing to the #1 spot *lots of big sellers flooding top 20 during this time* on 3/2/1985. *enters top 10 @ #10 on 1/26/1985* will spend 3 wks @ #1 & a thrilling 6 mos. just in the top 10 :) album will go 6x plat. that year, that's right 6 million! and will rank @ #4 on bb's 200 chart year-end list. basically being the 4th biggest selling album in the u.s. for that year.
wham did have a debut album prior to 'make it big'...not really doing anything over here, this was by far their biggest u.s. success. and they would be in the top 10 with other bigger sellers: bruce springsteen/born in the usa (15x plat.), lionel richie/can't slow down (10x plat.), madonna/like a virgin (10x plat.) *i was obsessed with madonna during this time!* and phil collins/no jacket required (12x plat.). so to be @ #4 on the 200 chart's year end list is still very impressive!
so, congrats again to both george and andrew! it's never easy for international artists to make it in america...but they did want to 'make it big' in the u.s. :D and they certainly did that with this album :)
Piran
Thanks for posting these throwbacks as always Sunshine Gal! :)
Well I agree that charting in the BB200's Top 10 at the same time as some albums that later went diamond is certainly great from WHAM! :D
I knew about their 3 #1 hits on the Hot 100, but I didn't know they were all from the same album. Impressive! ;)
Techfan
I actually did know they were from the same album. One of my sisters was a very big Wham! fan. I personally loved Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Freedom at the time. I had a conflicted relation with Careless Whisper and never really cared for Everything She Wants.
Piran
My mum liked George Michael & WHAM! a lot too. 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' & 'Careless Whisper' are her favourite songs of theirs. 'Last Christmas' is also her (& my) favourite Christmas song of all-time.
So did you get a chance to check out the Top 40 Chart Of The Year & my review of the Top 10 then? :)
Techfan
Hey Piran! I already checked the Top 100 and your review. BTW, are you going to watch Man. City vs. Liverpool later today?
Piran
Thanks for checking that Techfan! :)
Liverpool vs Man City should be an interesting game, so I will probably watch it. I've got family at my house later to celebrate New Year's Eve though. Do you have any plans for tonight?
Techfan
Yes, I will be going to visit my uncle's family tonight. I'm going to another uncle's family for lunch as well.
Sunshine Gal
well, remember wham had a debut album that really didn't do anything, so there was no guarantee on what the response would be to their 2nd album. i don't remember too much of wham doing any previous music before the 2nd album @ the time...but i do remember 'careless whisper' on mtv quite a bit...still into madonna during that time.
but see, with george, i just know that when he went solo, he wanted to even be bigger than wham :). i'm pretty sure he was reading bb mag. during all that time and the physical mag. always listed the certifications of the albums and singles and i can just imagine george seeing all those diamond albums on the chart in 1985, i'm sure he wanted to achieve that level too ;).
what strikes me most about wham's u.s. run in 1985 is not only that george did most of the songwriting and production, but how young he was! he would've been 22 that year...and to make an album that was such a big success, i gotta give him a lot of credit! even when he did the faith album, he would've been around 24, the same ages as our lm and 1D mates.
Piran
Awesome! Also, the good news for me today was that Liverpool beat Man City 1-0 in the football. ;)
Piran
Yeah, sometimes it's all about patience in the music industry. That's why I think Little Mix could still have a chance at major success in the US in the coming years. :)
I also noticed that after his 'Faith' album, he got two more BB200 Top 10s; 'Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1' (#2 peak, 1990) & 'Older' (#6 peak, 1996). Do you remember those albums quite well then?
Techfan
Hey Piran! As a heads up, Joseph's album and single lists for 2016 were posted in the Ask Billboard article today. Happy New Year! ;)
Piran
Happy New Year to you as well Techfan! :)
Yeah, I saw that earlier today. It's cool that Joseph got a mention in the Ask Billboard article.
So is the BB200 article going to be posted tonight or tomorrow then?
Techfan
I think it'll probably be until tomorrow.
Sunshine Gal
i do remember the listen without prejudice album and i think i even bought it...can't recall the 'older' album too much though. for the 200 article dated 6/1/1996 'older' enters @ #6...mariah's 'daydream' album would be my fave album during that time. and believe it or not, i had no idea who shania twain was that year :D she hadn't crossed over to the pop scene quite yet...
and for the hot 100 in the same week, i would've been really into bone-thugs n harmony back then. and celine dion was also a fave artist of mine...it just seemed that george wasn't as big as the current crop of artists that year. even whitney houston would later have the same thing...it's never easy to keep staying @ the top. i don't even recall george's single 'fastlove' too much...but don't mean i can't re-buy his albums today ;)

"Rockabye" by Clean Bandit (feat Anne-Marie and Sean Paul) remains at number 1 on the last Official UK Singles Chart of 2016. It has now been at the top of the charts for eight straight weeks, making it the second-longest running number one single in the UK this year, behind "One Dance" by Drake (which spent 15 weeks at the summit of the charts).
"I Would Like" by Swedish singer Zara Larsson is at number 2 this week. It was produced by The Monsters and the Strangerz (from Miami, Florida), who have produced such hits as "If It Ain't Love" by Jason Derulo; "Voicemail" by Fifth Harmony; "Thank You" by Meghan Trainor; and "Someday" by Michael Buble & Meghan Trainor.
"Last Christmas" by Wham! is at number 7 this week. It was originally written and produced by the late great George Michael. It was first released on December 3, 1984.
"I Don't Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker)" by ZAYN and Taylor Swift is at number 36 this week. I was a bit dissapointed by this song. I expected so much more from Zayn and Taylor Swift.
Sunshine Gal
so, this is def. the official updated singles article?
Techfan
Yep. Talk to you later!
Piran
Yeah, this is the one! ;)
I'll start working on my review now, but it will have to be a short one today. LOL
Sunshine Gal
i have some cool wham throwbacks i'll be putting up in just a few ;)
Sunshine Gal
alright mate, i'll get to work on the throwbacks...hopefully you'll be able to check 'em out before you sign off :)
Piran
Hey Sunshine Gal! :)
Really sorry, but I'll have to check out your throwbacks later. :/
See you soon though. ;)
Sunshine Gal
ok mate, no prob! i got that 'error' when i was done with the first batch of throwbacks! al;khd;lfahdl;h! LOL! hopefully they'll still post up later :( talk to you later :)
Techfan
Look forward to them!
Sunshine Gal
i got that 'error' but i did re-post the 1st batch right on the article...let me know if you're able to see them. wham did even better than i thought! but i honestly didn't know too much about them back then.
Piran
Hey Sunshine Gal, I'm back again! I'll check out your throwbacks right now. ;)
Techfan
I did see your throwbacks reply! :) Too bad your Bulls got beaten by the Pacers earlier today ...
Sunshine Gal
gee thanks buddy! :D and yeah, that game put me to sleep...thank god for golden state! i got the bulls again today...but yeah, they're getting tons of angry fan responses on their twitter. they're just not playing good defense, offense and rebounding.
Sunshine Gal
hey mate!! guess which football game we got over here just now? ;) the liverpool vs. manchester city one....i gotta be honest, i thought it was boring..sorry mate. i just didn't understand it. you guys hit the ball with your heads and with no helmets?? and no knee or elbow pads?? also, it was very hard understanding the announcers...is it playoffs right now? but i saw that chelsea won :)))!! and i thought about you the whole time! hope you caught it ;)
well, the news about our mate george over here is that they need more tests to make a final determination on the cause of his death? and almost everywhere, his cds are selling out like crazy! :)!! we gotta check out the catalog charts on bb soon...i'm very confident george will be in the top 10, maybe even #1.
Piran
Hey Sunshine Gal! I hope your day is going well. :)
Well I didn't find the game boring & what made it even more awesome is that Liverpool won their game with Man City 1-0. It's great to know that both of our teams won! :D
Anyway, it's New Year's Eve over here now (not too long before midnight actually), so I'll try to be back on again in a few hours. If not, Happy New Year to you. ;)
Sunshine Gal
hahaha! of course you didn't find it boring :D. i guess i need to learn the game more...but the players don't get a lot of injuries? in u.s. football, the players have all kinds of shoulder, knee and even elbow pads. they're also running as fast as possible and to lessen the extent of any injuries.
and all this week over here, we're getting quite a bit of the english football games. 2mor, i'll get the liverpool and a few of the others and then on weds. we're getting the chelsea game...i'm recording that ;). and we're getting lots of rugby and cricket games...maybe they wanna attract more u.s. fans?
well, in the junior hockey playoffs right now team usa is off to a great start! already a few of the american players will be drafted by nhl teams next season ;). to make it to the junior level, those kids have to be good :). and during the playoffs, there's scouts from all the nhl teams so the kids know the scouts are watching them :). a lot of the current nhl players today played in the junior league.
so, any news on our mate george re-entering the bb charts this week?
Piran
Well I actually found football boring at first, but you just need to get used to it by watching more games. It's good to hear that you're getting more British sports on American TV! :)
So what did you do for New Year's Eve then? :D
Also, regarding George Michael, the HDD SPS predictions for the upcoming BB200 are that 'Twenty Five' will be at #9 & 'Faith' is at #17. I'll check to see if any other albums from him should re-enter the Top 50. ;)
I honestly don't know about the Hot 100 yet, so I guess we'll just have to wait until tomorrow regarding his singles.
Sunshine Gal
mate!!! so glad you're on :))))!! yeah, the rules are confusing compared to u.s. football. but 2mor, looks like we're getting the middleborough, manchester united and liverpool games all in one day. i'll still check it out...so how long does the game last for? but i did see the pt. that liverpool scored ;)....but it took such a long time! see in american football, it'd be very rare and unusual for an hr to go by and no score for either team.
well, i had junior hockey yesterday, team usa beat canada (bitter rivalry) 2-0. also had the bulls, they lost :( 2mor, we're getting the blackhawks and st. louis blues (also a bitter rivalry :D) 2mor morning my time. and 2mor, i also got bulls and the golden state warriors. i will check out the liverpool game...are you gonna be able to catch it 2mor?
well, we'll also keep an eye on the catalog albums chart this week ;). i'm very confident that esp. the faith album will enter very high. that album is sold out just about everywhere here ;).
Piran
Yeah, there are sometimes 0-0 (no score) games in football matches. This is very rarely the case in rugby though & someone would often score points within a few minutes. Oh football games last 90 minutes (two halves of 45 minutes) but there will be about a 15-20 halftime break. :)
Well I'll check what time the games are on, but I'll probably be on the Billboard articles for a while tomorrow & I really need to start revising for my exam next week! :D LOL
'Twenty Five' is more likely to re-enter higher than 'Faith' according to the final BB200 predictions though. Also, regarding Shania Twain, you said that you didn't know about her back in 1996 before she made pop music. What the first song you heard from Shania that made you a fan of hers then? ;)
Sunshine Gal
so do you like cricket too? there was some type of cricket game going on earlier...but i was watching the new england patriots and dallas cowboys (hate both teams) games. i gotta get more into english football, but i was very surprised on all the english premier games we're getting this week. is it playoffs over there?
and yes, i want you to do your schoolwork moreso than being on bb ;). so, no 200 article today? well, on the catalog albums chart, i'm very confident that 'faith' will get the highest re-entry :). we'll have to see, but our mate george should have @ least 3 re-entries (faith, listen without prejudice and older) in the top 10 *hopefully*. i can't say the 'patience' album will make any kind of bb splash (i don't remember that album too much back then). in fact, i do remember back when 'listen without prejudice' was out, i kept waiting for volume 2...but it never happened.
and no, i had no idea who shania was in 1996. her country singles back then weren't crossover hits from what i remember. the first shania song i ever heard on the radio would be 'you're still the one', the vid would also be on vh1 quite a bit. and also seeing it in the top 10 week after week, and then locking the #2 spot for those 9 wks was very impressive! it's always rare for country acts to crossover on the hot 100 chart, esp. in the top 10. and then seeing the album already @ diamond (and this was when it'd still be @ 10x plat :)), it'd be hard not to constantly see her in the top 10 of both charts.
Piran
I think cricket is fine, but I don't regularly watch it at all. I'm pleased that you want to get more into football though. Also, this week's matches aren't the play-offs, but the EPL is now halfway through it's current season I believe. :)
George Michael should almost certainly get #1 in the Catalog Albums Chart, right? Also, it's more exam preparation that I have to do instead of homework! :P LOL
Anyway, I doubt the BB200 article will post today due to it being New Year's Day. I expect the Top 10 to be published tomorrow.
In other news, the UK's 2016 Chart Of The Year (Top 100 Singles) was also revealed over the weekend. Have you been able to check that out yet? ;)
Sunshine Gal
really? unless we have a european espn channel i didn't know about :). all day today we've been getting just about all the english premier league games. next week is playoffs for us, and my giants are in there by a thread :D. the 2 teams i despise the most (patriots and cowboys) have a 1 week bye, so they get to rest and have home-field advantage thruout the playoffs.
well, i don't know if faith will get a #1 entry in the catalog albums chart for sure...but i did check on amazon u.s., and faith is #8 in cd album sales and #2 on mp3 albums sales ;). see, i told you he was big here :). no matter what went on in his personal life, great music is still great music. i'm very confident, of all his catalog 'faith' should get the highest entry on the catalog albums chart's top 10.
umm, no i haven't checked out the rest of the official singles chart...there's quite a bit of artists i really don't know too much about. so, who had the #1 single and album over xmas week over there? ;)
Piran
Well I remember one week last year, UK TV got an usually large amount of American football games. I think that was because there was one at Wembley or something. :)
Unfortunately, 'Faith' has fallen to #27 on US iTunes right now. I do agree that the album will definitely be the highest re-entry in all of the albums charts though! :D
As for the UK charts, 'Rockabye' by Clean Bandit was the Christmas #1 single. It's still leading the Official Charts for an eighth consecutive week & dominating on: sales, streaming & radio!
Regarding the albums, Michael Ball & Alfie Boe (two classical singers) got the Christmas #1 album. However, Little Mix's 'Glory Days' reclaimed the #1 on the albums chart, giving them their third non-consecutive week there. ;)
Sunshine Gal
oh were you able to check out the faith album? he won the grammy for album of the year ;) well, i can't say for the 200 chart, but def. on the catalog albums chart, i think faith will have the highest entry of all his catalog. yeah sorry mate, i don't know who michael ball and alfie boe are...is george going to be high up on the uk charts anytime soon?
ok mate, the later football game will be on soon over here (green bay packers *cheeseheads* vs. the detroit lions). and the 'cheese' reference is due to the fact that wisconsin (where green bay is) is known for all their dairy farms. and for many generations, many dairy farmers took great pride in 'packing' their cheese...and there's nothing like wisconsin cheese! supposed to be the very best in the u.s. so, when you see any green bay packers football games, you see people with cheese on their heads? ;D that's where that comes from.
ok mate, i'll catch you 2mor or on tues during my usual time @ the library. 2mor, lots of hockey and basketball..and of course a federal holiday :D. ok, good night :)
Piran
I did check out some of the 'Faith' album & I really liked it. I was listening to the radio for a while earlier today & three different George Michael songs were on in the same hour: 'Careless Whisper', 'Faith' & 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me'. :)
Yeah, I knew you wouldn't know who Michael Ball & Alfie Boe were, considering they've only charted in the UK & nowhere else. I think George Michael will probably be dropping down the charts next week & may even fall out of them completely the following week. Well it was nice to see 'Last Christmas' reach the UK Top 10 this week though & finally get its debut on the Hot 100! :D
Anyway, I should be on tomorrow, so I look forward to seeing you then. You're lucky that America get a federal holiday again, but we won't be having one. Chat to you soon! ;)
Sunshine Gal
hey good morning mate! so, did the bb charts update for this week? i don't see our mate george on the catalog albums chart..but it's dated jan. 7th...so i know it should be a week ahead.
so, how is the studying going? you're fully prepared for your next exam? well, here in tucson, we're getting mid-60s in the weather...and then by next mond. back to 75* :D can't complain, many parts of the u.s. are getting hit with tons of cold snow and rain.
you guys don't have a federal holiday for new year's where there's no mail, no banks open, etc.? our next federal holiday will be martin luther king day, on jan. 16th, usually the 3rd monday of jan. so, no library that day either.
ok mate, i'll see you over on bb :P and are you gonna be able to check out the chelsea game on weds...i'm def. recording that one ;)
Piran
Hey Sunshine Gal! :)
Well the BB200 article posted yesterday & the Hot 100 article also published about an hour ago. The rest of the charts will probably update early your time tomorrow. :D
Well my next exam will be in one week from now & I'm mostly confident with it (don't understand mathematical proofs that well yet though). I'll try to watch the Chelsea game tomorrow, although I'll be quite busy. Also, we do have a federal holiday for New Year's Day on the 1st, but not the 2nd unlike you Americans. ;)
Sunshine Gal
ok, def. update me on the catalog albums chart 2mor if you get to see them before me. i'm very confident our mate george will flood the top 10...or @ least the faith album will be in the top 10. and as far as the 200 albums chart goes, the faith album already went to #1 on it back in the day and had remarkable success...so i'm not too concerned about it charting high on the main albums chart. but i def. want it in the catalog albums chart...i do like that chart's concept, basically showing love to past music :)
ok mate, i'll hop over to the current 200 and hot 100 articles in just a lil' bit ;)
