Marysue 2010- opinion of the week

Sad once again to not have Messy as the number 1 I think Dua Lipa Dance the night was the last number 1 by a British artist that was 2023. Its a shame that now most number 1s stay in the chart for eight or nine weeks instead of having new no.1`s more frequently (remember what a good year 2014 was for music?) In fact, the top two songs in this weeks chart have been there since November so maybe its time for a new number 1? Gracie Abrams songs is no WAY as bad as Sabrina Carpenter`s tenure with Espresso last year seriously I was going to give up hope that there would ever be a new number 1 last Autumn but it just seems like a year where I want to have a bit more movement in the charts. There`s a few good new songs this week as below:

Messy Lola Young

Dirty Cash Pawsa

The Door Teddy Swims

Stick Season Noah Kahan

Too Sweet Hozier

A Bar Song Shaboozey

Stargazing Myles Smith

And the ultimate surprise this week? Hozier`s Do I wanna know? Brilliant that`s in the charts!

Been laughing at Denial is a river this week- its such a good comedy rap with an eternally catchy beat.

I HOPE the charts are getting better- 2025 is probably going to be a decider year for music.

As last week says, I am starting to see movement in the chart, but there`s so much music that just doesn`t get enough radio airplay and chart frequency.

Well done Doechi! 'Denial Is A river' is a great song!

Shame to see none of Franz Ferdinand's new songs in the charts. Listened to their new albun last night, really enjoyed 'Night Or Day' and 'Audacious'

I heard the main single 'Hooked' and that Hooked me!

Bro Lil Baby flopped big time over here. Aside from Kendrick Lamar, not really anything notable in terms of rap in the Top 40.

M

And then he claims that younger people wouldn't understand.

Lil baby can shut up, I know rap cr*p when I hear it.

I'm gobsmacked Myles ain't a one hit wonder.

Well 'Nice to meet you' is better than 'stargazing' atleast

Charts are so stagnant and dry it's doing my head in. Songs stay too long in the charts now. Beautiful Things, Too Sweet and Stick Season have been in there for far long and it needs to go

M

mrstarling

3

And all the same re entries like 'Take me to church'

2

I wish the songs in the lower ends would clear off too. I like Everywhere and all that but I'd want to see them go, because there's so many old artists still releasing music and I'd imagine a lot of them would get a few songs in the low-ends of the charts today if they weren't always there. I'm glad to see their legacy lasting long though, but it'd be good to see those artists having an impact today too.

M

100%! There legacy has been shown, especially in the albums chart.

I was hoping Jade debut album would go number 1 but after her debut song got top 10, following releases have not been going well. Why aren't peeps listening to her?

M

They aren't listening to her because they don't like her music.

‘Headlock’ giving Imogen Heap her first Top 40 hit nearly two decades after release is definitely one of the highlights of the week for me. If this is next 2000s song to have a late resurgence, then that would be amazing! ❤️

I’m also happy to see ‘Indigo’ finally making the region this week. It’s another solid country duet that’s actually doing better here than it is in the US.

Surprised to see Hozier’s cover of ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ from 2014 entering the chart too. Shame I’m just lukewarm on it for now.

How much u want to bet there’ll be a new number 1 next week?

M

I swear if marshmello and the Jonas brothers bland pop song goes top 40.

Piran

'Leave Before You Love Me'... or did they release another collab?

I like that Bad Bunny’s new album is making a decent impact in the UK, considering reggaeton music often struggles here.

That being said, I’d recommend his 2022 album ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’. It didn’t produce any chart entries but it’s easily his best work to date.

M

mrstarling

1

Love the album! Such a vibe

Piran

1

'DTMF' will probably go Top 40 next week as it's doing very well on Spotify.

avatar

Piran

4

Not sure why ‘Pink Pony Club’ is suddenly getting a second wind but glad to see it nonetheless!

Hopefully it can reach a new peak next time and maybe even enter the Top 10 in the weeks ahead. :)

M

mrstarling

1

It's one of Chappell's better songs but I still don't like it.

avatar

Piran

3

Shame that 'It Girl' didn't hold onto its place in the Top 40 after all... 😔

It’s not on the same level as ‘Angel Of My Dreams’ or even ‘Midnight Cowboy’ for me, but Jade sounds incredibly confident here and I like that she’s stepping into more electronic production.

Looking forward to her solo debut album and hopefully it won’t be too long before we get it!

M

mrstarling

1

I let out a sigh of relief when she missed the top 40.

Goodness.. I miss little mix as a whole

I miss Little Mix as a group but I like Jade's solo music a lot. Probably my favourite out of all the members so far.

6

Shame that ‘APT.’ missed the #1 after all despite leading the First Look and midweek update.

If it can’t get there with a physical sales boost and its streams are consistently on the decline, then it’s chances of making it to the summit unfortunately seem to be gone.

Still really pleased with how well it’s ended up doing. I don’t think anybody expected it to become anywhere near this big when it was released!

H

haz_mcr

3

Tbf I would’ve preferred it

M

mrstarling

1

Yeah... a huge shame that it missed the number one to Gracie, 8 weeks is crazy for 'That's So true'

M

'That's So True' doesn't feel like an eight-week #1 hit for me.
