The charts are so stagnant. i could go on holiday for 3 months and find pretty much the same songs still loitering around when i returned. There are very few surprises anymore, let alone shocks.it seems quite a few of you are fed up of it too but what can be done? Anyway, here's my weekly dose of nostalgia..a list of the 10 songs that were played randomly on my media player.Ironically, lead by one of the 'long runners' and 'shock masters' of the 80's :

1: Relax                                                FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

2: Rat race                                           THE SPECIALS

3: Dance for me                                   MARY J BLIGE

4: I'm falling                                         THE BLUEBELLS

5: Twist and shout                               SALT N PEPA

6: Losing my mind                               LIZA MINELLI

7: Too shy                                             KAJAGOOGOO

8: Twilight cafe                                    SUSAN FASSBENDER

9: South of the border                        ED SHEERAN + CAMILA CABELLO

10: One step closer                             S CLUB JUNIORS

Chart Review Except They're Not Anymore 04/10/24

Yeah. I'm done with these reviews now. It was a nice 1 year, 3 months and 4 days while it lasted. Don't you assume I'll be vanishing from these pages anytime soon though, I'll still be posting my thoughts on the new entries and putting my rankings of the Top 40 in your faces for as long as I wish, but that is it for the in-depth and biased takes on what goes on in the music scene.

Also college is quite literally assigning me to purgatory so that doesn't help.

This also has nothing to do with the fact that Shed Seven have somehow achieved a 2nd No.1 album this year with a bunch of different renditions of their old stuff, and DEFINITELY not because they've stopped Bring Me The Horizon from romping to the top spot. Absolutely nothing to do with that robbery. Elsewhere Sabrina is still stuck at the summit, Nines has made a song that is better than it has any right to be, Addison Rae surges up the listings to give me a cavity, Linkin Park have ended up making In The End for the 212th time with their new one, and The Weeknd has clearly realised that in order to do bits these days, you've got to be BORING. And that is what Timeless delivers in spades. Also Kylie is done for again and Padam Padam was clearly a fluke. See you next week for the Coldplay fiasco.

AMAZING TIER:

Charli XCX [21] (Ah well it was fun while it lasted.), Chappell Roan [9], Linkin Park [14], Chase & Status ft. Stormzy [6], Shaboozey [24]

GREAT TIER:

Chappell Roan [2], The Weeknd [35], Linkin Park [18] (The League of Legends song for this year. If it worked for Imagine Dragons I guess...), Sabrina Carpenter [3]

GOOD TIER:

Adam Port/Stryv/This Joke Is Atrocious [16], Sabrina Carpenter [1], Charli Xcx ft. Billie Eilish [12], Billie Eilish [15], Nines [39] (An actually creative video for a UK rap hit. About dang time.), Tate McRae [26], Chappell Roan [17]

OK TIER:

Sabrina Carpenter [5], Addison Rae [22] (I swear to heavens if the Live Lounge effect does what it did to Noah Kahan last year I'm gonna riot.), Gigi Perez [11], JADE [28], Sonny Fodera/Jazzy/D.O.D. [10], Billie Eilish [20], Teddy Swims [13]

EH TIER:

Gracie Abrams [19], Coldplay [32], Noah Kahan [40] (That's the magical fifty mark. What unrivalled joy. 😑), Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars [4], Ndotz [23], Myles Smith [31], Coldplay [27]

DISLIKE TIER:

Teddy Swims [30], The Weeknd/Playboi Carti [7], The Kid LAROI [36], Dasha [37], Alex Warren [38]

BAD TIER:

Alex Warren [34], Hozier [33], BL3SS/CamrinWatsin/bbyclose [8]

AWFUL TIER:

Benson Boone [25], Teddy Swims [29] (Christmas can't come soon enough for these two.)

NEWBIES:

The Weeknd/Playboi Carti - Timeless [7] (Not to be ironic or anything here, but this song really isn't. At all.)

Nines - Going Crazy [39] (His album's new at 4, but this single probably should've performed a little better. He certainly was in 2023 that's for sure. Song slaps though.)

Kylie Minogue - Lights Camera Action [59] (Someone's trying too hard to jump on a bandwagon I see.)

Nines/Marnz Malone - Cold Hearted World 3 [65] (Retiring from rap for some reason. Nines is, anyway. Nice knowing ya lad, but you didn't really do that much.)

Kygo & Imagine Dragons - Stars Will Align [69] (Do I really need to talk about the wastepile that is Kygo at this point?)

JADE - Midnight Cowboy [93] (It's a promo song, ok? Her career isn't down the toilet just yet.)

PARTYNEXTDOOR - N o C h i l l [96] (I swear the cover art for this is just asking for me to go to prison just by association. Snoozefest of a song anyway.)

Looks like the Oasis tracks are done… until the tour in the middle of next year, at least.

It’s a shame that ‘Timeless’ got such a high debut when ‘Dancing In The Flames’ is just plummeting like that. I’m definitely not going crazy for ‘Going Crazy’ either unfortunately.

A bit disappointed that ‘Lights Camera Action’ couldn’t hold onto its place in the Top 40 as it’s definitely my favourite Kylie song of the year to date.

Hey, at least ‘Slow It Down’ finally got hit by ACR. It was right at the bottom of my rankings for the last 17 weeks! 😳

I know ‘Midnight Cowboy’ was only a promotional single, but I still expected it to debut higher than it did. Oh well, at least ‘Angel Of My Dreams’ is looking to have a bit more stability than expected!

avatar

Piran

4

I wasn’t expecting ‘Diet Pepsi’ to take as much of a jump as it did, but I can’t exactly complain about it and I’m definitely warming to the song.

‘Wildflower’ is another one that’s building momentum and beginning to grow on me. Happy for Billie on all the success she’s achieved with this era! 😊

Piran

‘Heavy Is The Crown’ isn’t as good as ‘The Emptiness Machine’ for me, but I have to give Emily credit for holding that note for 15 seconds on the final hook… just wow.

Speaking of rock bands, I recommend checking out Pale Waves! They’ve never made it onto the singles chart, but they have made three Top 10 appearances over on the albums chart. Their newest project which dropped last week is absolutely fantastic! ❤️

Hate to be the killjoy for these kinds of things, but their new one you're talking about has just torn up their perfect Top 10 record. Then again, my favourites Maximo Park did little better either, so I'm guessing we can't have everything in life.

Jealousy is the only song I care about from Pale Waves though.

Piran

Yeah, I saw they debuted at #13. I was expecting the album to do a little better but what matters for me more is that I really enjoyed the music.

Between ‘The Door’ and ‘Bad Dreams’, it seems like Teddy Swims is actually heading in the right direction with his music. Wouldn’t mind seeing the latter become a hit!
