Serious question, why is chart music so terrible, isn't it supposed to be the most popular songs?

Chart Review 09/08/24

Alright. Everybody confess.

Who had Charli XCX nicking a No.1 single on their bingo card for this year?

Yes folks, we're diving head first into this review with open arms, and who better to bring us to salvation from the craziness and the (literal) riots in the best-sellers than the former queen of mediocrity? For years, Charli has become a byword in my vocabulary for "Critically adored artist fails to make a dent on the world at large". Ever since she Icona Pop'd to the top in 2013, she's had a right tough time of it. Just because Boom Clap was massive doesn't mean you have to milk it, girl. Years and years of midtable showings for fan favourite songs like Boys, After The Afterparty, Beg For You, and 1999 are definite proof that clearly, the general public were immune to her "What if Pop didn't stink?" method of philosophy. Considering none of them did it for me either, you can put me in that description as well somewhere.

You could be forgiven for thinking similar situations were afoot when BRAT's lead single von dutch limped into the 20s and out again with little hysteria, and the album impact only extending to 360 also ending up in the bottom half of our jaded and hollow chart preferences. Then some funny stuff happened. 360 didn't immediately vanish. Her album has now hung about for ages. Now said single and her other stuff are rapidly hurtling up the listings. TikTok powered (what isn't these days) hit Apple now becomes her first Non-Barbie Top 10 smash since Doing It in 2015, with 360 sitting close below it at No.11 (everybody mock Eminem for his choices in life). Now the apex of the apex, the big kahuna, the grand ceremony, has finally occured. The inevitable has materialised, and I can officially whole-heartedly congratulate Charli XCX for hitting the top spot, solving world hunger, fixing the Israel-Palestine fiasco, and sticking one in the fact of everyone who ever dared to mock her.

Some of this may be inaccurate.

For those who don't know yet, Guess is a song on her special "Here's 3 new bits and pieces I found one day" edition of BRAT, and, to be honest, isn't as great as her other smashes. Having said that though, the catalyst for this surprise has been Billie Eilish, who pops up on this remix, manages to get a credit (take THAT, Lorde), and appears in a video where she gets to drive a tractor and throw underwear all over the gaff. You know. Typical Billie. Seeing it pop up at No.1 is one of life's greatest justices, and thus, I shall pray to the Lord that all the other chart-toppers this year don't RUIN this promise. Even if all 3 of Billie's UK best-sellers have come through artifical means (I'm looking at you James Bond. And Barbie. Again). Also, one of her album tracks has now become a hit, WILDFLOWER crawling up to 37 despite sounding exactly like an album track. Blame Amazon Music for this.

WILDFLOWER is one of 4 new hits today (already talked about Guess), but neither of the others are much cop. Creeping up to 31 from last week's 42 is Sonny Fodera, a man who just last year was preparing to wreck the dancefloor with Asking. Now he's back to try and prove he isn't a 1-hit wonder by hiring fellow faceless dance acts Jazzy and D.O.D to burn through your bog-standard trancefest. Seriously, at this point, the trend of timed cymbal crashes they use in songs like this reminds me of the Great Finger Clicking Epidemic of the late 2010s. That was abysmal. And a part of me dies everytime I hear it. This better not happen again.

Also breaching the UK Top 40 is Indian rapper and former resident of Texas, Hanumankind, whose first release in over a year has recieved your usual batch of online traction from those in the know, and powers his way to No.35 unannounced. Can't lie though, Big Dawgs just isn't my kind of jam. Maybe there's something between me and the Spotify crowd that have carried it here that doesn't click, but I am not a fan of this song at all. It doesn't help that his facial hair reminds me of a certain Benson Boone. And if you're making me reminisce of that poor fellow, then you've absolutely BOTTLED IT. Where's Jay Sean when you need him?

There are other chart movements to keep your eye on though, so don't lose faith just yet. ACR has fallen on the unfortunate head of Kendrick Lamar, his former Top 10 smash now plummeting to 47 out of nowhere. Jimin suffers the traditional BTS drop that all ex-members face, his 2nd Top 10 faring the same fate as his first. Expect that went from 8 to 38 in the space of a few weeks, so that's progress I suppose. *NSYNC are now suddenly relevant again, the Deadpool & Wolverine hype clearly not evaporating considering Bye Bye Bye flies up to 12 today, making them contenders for the Top 10 all over again. But my greatest thanks go to Belfast singer/rapper/whatever and potential 1-hit wonder Jordan Adetunji, who is clearly successful enough to hire R&B underdog Kehlani to appear on a remix of hit song.. er.... KEHLANI. I've seen worse product placement I suppose. Suffice to say, the remix has proven enough mettle to carry him up to No.9 this week, meaning we've clearly got to give him some respect. If he can ace the chart with little worry, yet ex-members of pop groups have to gang up like crazy, then anything could happen at this point.

Outside the 40 and Gracie Abrams has to be content with the inevitable No.41 award she'll get for narrowly missing out, meanwhile the hotly-tipped album chart battle between Jack White and Kanye West just did not happen. Like, at all. Jack's surprise LP No Name limps to 33 while Mr. West's 2nd entry in his and Ty Dolla $ign collab thingy ends up at 7, with none of the 3 hits in the 100 doing anything of note. It's for the best, to be honest. Also, Lost Frequencies's massacre of a Tom Odell has gone up 28, and I need to find everyone responsible for this and leak their social security numbers. No real reason why. It's not like the new version is ABYSMAL or anything...

Anyways, this week's releases. Over on the albums and the usual suspects will have to do with Will Young's latest boredom-fest, but if you dislike BBC Radio 2, you'll be glad to know that beabadoobee's new one is out as well. So good luck I guess. There's also Asake, Calvin Harris ruining his album history somewhat, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is anyone cares, while the singles will see new efforts from Clean Bandit, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes, Fontaines D.C. and London Grammar. Even though the only one that matters is Chase & Status hiring Stormzy for their latest get-up. And I will be there to laugh at all the no-hopers next week. Be there.

PERFECT SUMMER ANTHEM TIER:

Chappell Roan [3], Charli XCX [11], Chappell Roan [15], Shaboozey [14]

THEY SOUND GREAT. HONEST. TIER:

Charli XCX [8] (Still engaged to 360, sorry.), *NSYNC [12], Bruce Springsteen [40], Sabrina Carpenter [13]

YEAH THEY'RE GOOD OR WHATEVER TIER:

Sabrina Carpenter [2], Chappell Roan [32], Charli XCX ft. Billie Eilish [1] (I've heard better tbh, the hype just flies over my head.), Billie Eilish [4], Taylor Swift [27], The Blessed Madonna/Clementine Douglas [29], Jordan Adetunji [9]

EH. I LIKE 'EM TIER:

Adam Port/Stryv/Loads of Guys [16] (Who forgot this was a thing?), Eminem [10], Central Cee ft. Lil Baby [22], Ice Spice/Central Cee [24], Teddy Swims [23]

AVERAGE AS MY AUNTIE TIER:

Post Malone & Morgan Wallen [30], Noah Kahan [33], Myles Smith [5] (He's Top 40 in America now. I guess that's noteworthy.), Calvin Harris & Ellie Goulding [38], Sonny Fodera/Jazzy/D.O.D. [31], Coldplay [26], Billie Eilish [37]

NUH-UH TIER:

Hanumankind/Kalmi [35], JADE [18], The Kid LAROI [36], Post Malone & Luke Combs [34], Dasha [6], Benson Boone [17] (I felt sorry for him this week. Don't know why.)

NEW HITS TIER:

Charli XCX ft. Billie Eilish - Guess [1] (Already talked about it enough, thanks.)

Hanumankind/Kalmi - Big Dawgs [35] (His voice reminds of Bad Boy Chiller Crew somewhat. That is pretty inexcusable in my books.)

Kanye West/Ty Dolla $ign - FIELD TRIP [65] (Stop reminding me of Lil Uzi Vert.)

Kanye West/Ty Dolla $ign - SLIDE [92] (This just kinda meanders a lot. I'll stick with BURN, if I'm being honest.)

Kanye West/Ty Dolla $ign - PROMOTION [94] (Maybe it's best that Kanye's latterday period is forgotten about.)

(P.S. And no, I'm not gonna gush over the fact that Chappell Roan has ended up with the No.1 album this week, because it's FAR too easy. I'm saving it for when she can get a No.1 single. If that ever happens, of course. 😁)

my music takeaway for the night: 🥡

  • you wanna guess what the headline of this takeaway is about? that’s right, my two favourite artists of the year so far have teamed up on a steaming hot remix of guess, launching it to number 1 and knocking that mid merchant off in the process. i didn’t expect billie to suit this kind of song, but she does; also, “charli likes boys but she knows id hit it” is my favourite two seconds of pop music in 2024 😮‍💨
  • speaking of remixes, *the* kehlani just hopped on the remix of that viral song about them, and it’s even better than the original, purely because their verse makes it longer and im quite the fan of kehlani. let’s see if jordan adetunji does start that whole choir by the end of the year (not gonna happen lol)
  • back to charli… how about apple being a top 10 hit?! brat summer isn’t dead despite what people are saying
  • deadpool and wolverine was a great film. hilarious inside jokes as usual! and it looks like bye bye bye is this summer’s murder on the dancefloor, although i expected like a prayer to be this successful as that’s more prominent in the film
  • somedays is a snoozer. heard it all before and jazzy is devoid of personality as per usual but the kick drum sounds great on my earbuds. move is more chill and a nice ibiza sunset kinda song. set my heart on fire is ok but i won’t revisit it.
  • big dawgs - what a tune! i don’t listen to this style of rap as much anymore but the beat on this one goes absolutely crazy and hanumankind has so much charisma throughout the song. hope this climbs further because me personally, i’d love for this to be a hit
  • wildflower is a beautiful song and one of my highlights off hit me hard and soft, so i hope this can be a slow burner if anything
  • for albums, im yet to listen to the jpegmafia album in full but i really like what ive heard. and i know the smashing pumpkins also dropped but idk how it’ll compare to their records from the 90s like mellon collie and siamese dream
  • i didn’t bother with vultures 2 after i thought the first one was completely irredeemable… and im glad i didn’t, because the reception to this was overwhelmingly negative. this trilogy is one way to completely tarnish a legendary hip-hop discography. i like to think of donda as the last kanye album; it was bloated, but there were great songs here and there, unlike on these pieces of garbage

have a good weekend everyone! (and don’t forget to stream the new beabadoobee and destroy boys albums!) 💞

Fantastic seeing Charli get her second #1 hit and her first since 2013! ❤️

‘Guess’ wasn’t originally one of my favourite tracks on ‘Brat’ but her and Billie have so much chemistry on the remix and I’m delighted that’s become the credited version of it on the chart. :)

Oh, and ‘Apple’ entering the Top 10 along with it is definitely an added bonus!

Can’t believe we’ve had to wait until the second week of August to have our first new #1 by a British artist this year.
