Chart Review 12/07/24

Oh hi! Didn't see you there! Are you ready for some WACKY (imagine the word but with some echo effects), BONKERS (same here), and downright MAD (you get the joke right?) chart stories?

You do? Oh good, thanks for asking.

You know that film Groundhog Day? Where a man keeps experiencing the same day, over and over again, and desperately tries to find a way to break the cycle? Yeah, turns out the Top 10 has ended up as boring as it always has. So yet again, it's time to clutch at straws and gawk at any so-called 'movement' the upper end of the best-sellers delivers us.

Like the new No.1. Which is actually an old one.

Yeah, turns out Sabrina Carpenter loves the top spot, who knew. It's not like you'd have noticed on Spotify or anything. After 3 weeks of serving us massive helpings of Please Please Please, she's now taken it OLD SKOOL and forced Espresso to have another 7 days at the summit, after the 5 times it was stranded at No.1 back in April and May. I can only imagine the madness that happens when her album arrives in August. It can't be any worse than seeing you-know-who hog the top spot for the rest of the summer.

Speaking of which, Taylor Swift has been kicked off the album chart top spot. Again. That means the Milky Bars are on Leicester's finest lad-impressers, Kasabian, who now have a 7th best-seller in the form of Happenings to gloat at us with, and pelt us with their Oasis for Northface shtick. Although, having said that, reviews for this thing have officially deemed them as "Coldplay but slightly more cool". Which is probably the most depressingly funny thing I've seen in an album review all year. I mean, come on, the only way you could do worse is if you WERE Coldplay.

OH WAIT.

Anyways, that's it for the upper half, apart from the return to the Top 10 for one of the more surprising hits of the past few months. You know, apart from All The Stars and that one Maroon 5 song he was one that no one liked, Kendrick Lamar hasn't been one to stick around in the charts for very long, has he? The likes of HUMBLE., i, and Die Hard all vanished as quickly as my dignity, and you probably attach that stigma to Not Like Us after all that Drake rivalry drama died down, as it casually sunk away from its No.6 peak in the chart. At least that was until he did a West Coast gig recently, and it involved him performing this song so many times I'm pretty sure he's still there whipping Twitter into a frenzy. Combine that with the release of a video last Friday that may as well be his victory parade around the streets with how many references it makes, and now Not Like Us has swung up to No.9 this week off the back of this. All that's left to say here is this. 🆒.

Also, Three Lions is back at 20, but we can save that speech for next week when the Euros are done and England end up frauding their way to victory. Unfortunately. Neil Diamond and Fat Les have also re-entered, so expect some mad shenanigans next time we chat.

There are new hits to dig through though, so we might as well get them out the way. You know Eminem, right? Decent little rapper, chart presence for a quarter of a century, former Slim Shady. Key word is FORMER, because new album The Death of Slim Shady is out today, and you can probably guess why it's called that. Last Wednesday, Marshall Mathers slapped out a song called TOBEY with Big Sean and BabyTron, and just kinda hoped for the best. Turns out 78 was it's best last time out, but now it has shot up to 29 with little difficulty, and it could probably do some stuff next week as well. Just a shame it goes on forever and doesn't excite me in the slightest. Maybe next time out, eh?

Three places below him is a guy that invokes memories of 2017 like no other, Ed She- nah only kidding. Quavo, a man who went from a member of Migos to LITERALLY EVERY TRANSATLANTIC SMASH that year and back again without anyone noticing. I'm The One, Strip That Down, Congratulations, Know No Better. He was on all of them, you couldn't escape him. Odd to think that he's never had a solo Top 100 single on these shores, nevermind a Top 40 success, but that changes now with Tough debuting at 32. Admittedly, that may have something to do with the fact that it features a certain Lana Del Rey, who with A&W (shouldn't have peaked at 41) last year showed that she CAN and WILL do rap without embarrassing everybody involved. Having said that though, as of the time I'm writing this, I had never Tough until the chart show today, so my feelings remain muted. Let's just agree to disagree to this song is just average, I don't know where the hype comes from. Pink Skies by Zach Bryan returns as well, thanks to his album not doing as well as you'd think he would. 16's a little disappointing for him, don't you think? I am still unimpressed as I was when it first charted, sadly.

Outside the Top 40 and we have a new one at 56 from, erm.. LeoStayTrill and Mr Reload It with Pink Lemonade (Str8 Reload). 😔 They could have made that shorter. Adam Port has risen to 46, so expect him in the best-sellers next time, Morgan Wallen is back and I couldn't care less about his two releases, another Charli XCX album track makes its bow, same too for Zach Bryan at 73, some dingus called Sammy Virji pops up and he's awful, but No.88 sees the return of one Childish Gambino. Now, not to be pedantic or anything, but 2018's This Is America was bleedin' amazing and I will have no complaints. Just a shame he's a 1-hit wonder. I also have no idea why he's gone for the Benson Boone route with his new one, but it's still better than anything Benson has or will ever record. No matter how many chart-topping singles that loser has.

Right then. Out today is the great Chart Battle of Mid. Katy Perry vs Kylie Minogue. Who will end up debuting at a disappointing No.27 next week before quickling departing by the time all the forum members have a chance to hype it up as the second coming. Besides, Griff is the head of New Music Friday anyway. Her new album is out right now, as she does battle with Travis, Cat Burns, Marc Almond, and a certain Ⓜ️♑️Ⓜ️, while the singles also sees new tracks from Ice Spice and Central Cee, Clairo, BERWYN, Rema, Jazzy, Artemas, d4vd, Laura Marling, and Michael Kiwanuka. Also, I got my prediction of everyone bar Quavo missing the Top 40 last week correct, so don't be surprised if only Ice and CC get there in the end. BYE.

YEAH THEY'RE GOATED TIER:

Chappell Roan [5], Taylor Swift ft. Post Malone [37], Charli XCX [31], Shaboozey [3] (There's a David Guetta remix of this, and it does not sound horrible for a change.), Chappell Roan [24]

QUITE GOOD ACTUALLY TIER:

Sabrina Carpenter [1] (Either she's extremely fortunate, or she's a teenage witch. No in-between.), Billie Eilish [17], Kendrick Lamar [9]

I LIKE 'EM TIER:

Sabrina Carpenter [2], Tommy Richman [38], Billie Eilish [4], Eminem [7] (Can't he just make a funny radio edit like the old days?), Taylor Swift [27]

THESE SOUND GOOD ON THE RADIO TIER:

Tommy Richman [23], Jordan Adetunji [21], The Blessed Madonna/Clementine Douglas [25], Dua Lipa [36], Noah Kahan [33] (Hearing it on the chart show for once reminds me how good it used to be.)

I HAVE NO FEELINGS TOWARDS THESE TIER:

Quavo ft. Lana Del Rey [32], Central Cee ft. Lil Baby [11], Billie Eilish [35] (Who else forgets CHIHIRO exists?), Teddy Swims [34], Coldplay [18], Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen [8] (It's alright until Morgan opens his gob.), Mark Ambor [12]

NOT A FAN TIER:

Taylor Swift [14], Zach Bryan [40], The Kid LAROI [28], Myles Smith [6], Eminem/Big Sean/BabyTron [29], Dasha [10], Hozier [13] (Who actually is still streaming this.)

IMMEDIATE MUTE ON THE TV TIER:

bl3ss/CamrinWatsin/bbyclose [26] (I can't be the only one thinking the singer's saying "Back to my OnlyFans", surely.) Baddiel/Skinner/Lightning Seeds [20], Benson Boone [15]

GET LOST AND NEVER COME BACK TIER:

Benson Boone [16], NewEra [39], David Guetta & OneRepublic [19], Michael Marcagi [22], Teddy Swims [30] (Play the right song Jack, you overrated little scamp.)

NEW HIT DETAILS:

Quavo/Lana Del Rey - Tough [32] (Not as good as it thinks it is. Sos.)

LeoStayTrill/Mr Reload It - Pink Lemonade (Str8 Reload) [56] (Ah, this reminds of the Great Rap Invasion of 2020. When nearly every new entry was boring af.)

Morgan Wallen - Lies Lies Lies [62] (This is new. It's a ballady snoozefest. So business as usual from him.

Charli XCX - Apple [64] (Track 11 on BRAT, and it shows. Not a patch on 360, that's for sure. Please don't beat me up for my opinions.)

Zach Bryan - 28 [73] (Just the 45 places off Zach. He's also 28 years old. Self-explanatory, really.)

Childish Gambino - Lithonia [88] (Man, he would make the Top 40 sound so fresh. Turns out nobody gives one after all.)

Morgan Wallen ft. ERNEST - Cowgirls [92] (This is from his last album. It's gone viral on TikTok. It's hardly any better despite sounding like Post Malone.)

Sammy Virji - If U Need It [94] (If AI made an uninterestingly dull dance song, it would sound like this. How is this supposed to raise the genre's spirits exactly?)

(P.S. I'll actually end up posting one of these ON TIME next week. Hah, imagine that. eh! Just turned 6 o'clock, you've burned through whatever you eat around this time, and my ramblings arrive to anger a certain minority once more. Except this time everyone notices. Next week is gonna be a bloodbath. isn't it...)

‘Girl, So Confusing’ is heading in the wrong direction smh… 😔

Even if I’m kind of mixed on the Quavo and Lana song, I will say that they’ve definitely got the title for the most surprising collab of the year so far!

‘Tobey’ is an improvement from ‘Houdini’. Will be interesting to see how much of an impact Eminem’s new album has next week.

lana del rey worked with asap rocky and playboi carti on a song in 2017 though, so anything is possible. although summer bummer is slightly different to lana’s other output, it’s still very lana-esque and a great song too.

aight, it’s england vs spain on sunday night. finalists!! we got hella lucky and we need to up our game if we want to beat spain because they’ve been incredible, playing proper end to end football. i mention this though, because i made a bet at the start of june to my irl friends that i thought i’d share here now that we’re in this position-

if england win the euros, i will wear a maid dress for a whole day.

i don’t see us winning, so that’s why i made the bet, but if they do win then i have to do it. lol. maidcore olivia incoming? 👀

You may not be the only one who's involved in an outfit dare based on sports... 😳

For context, my friend and I are doing a competition that involves games like darts, pool, mini-golf, bowling, air hockey, etc. and the winner gets to choose the loser's Halloween outfit to wear into town later in the year.

The difference is that there were no political songs in the chart earlier in the month even in the aftermath of the general election, whereas there are three football-related songs here as a result of the Euros.

How England have made it into the Euro finals given how they’ve played is truly bewildering. Unfortunately, ‘3 Lions’ is really beginning to grate on me as a song. We have so many better football anthems. :/

avatar

Piran

2

Let’s face it, Spain are very likely going to win on Sunday anyway (and they honestly deserve it with how they’ve played throughout the tournament).

vindaloo is way worse. i feel like im being taunted when i listen to it. also i have spain on my sweepstake so my bank account will be pleased if they win it at least.

'3 Lions' always seems to curse England though, so the fact it's skyrocketed into the Top 20 today isn't a good sign for them.

it’s because of the music video. have you not seen it? it’s incredible!! there’s so many layers to it and if he keeps that snippet he teased at the start of it in the vault we’re doomed.

avatar

Piran

1

Oh yeah, it's probably among my favourite ones of the year alongside 'Von Dutch'! It's just that it's been a while since a song got a significant boost in the charts because of a music video (thanks to the adjusted formula).

With ‘Espresso’ back at #1, Sabrina becomes only the second female artist ever to replace herself at the summit. Her upcoming album is going to be absolutely massive!
