oh wanted to ask: anyone going to see the new whitney houston movie? if you've seen it, i'd love to hear your feedback. her sister in law, pat houston, & clive davis (record executive who signed her and became a life long friend and mentor to her) are involved in this movie.

& i feel, that FINALLY, there's a movie that accurately tells her life story. believe me, i've been a fan of hers since 1985 and there's so much more to her life than just drugs & drama. she was also a beautiful person inside & out and worked very hard to make it in music.

the backstreet boys did a remake of the wham classic 'last xmas', it's really good! here in the states wham was pretty big, george michael would be 10x bigger as a solo artist when his faith album came out in 1987.

Charity records should have had their own side chart and not affect the main chart listings. If only we knew how misleading their positions could be at the beginning. Behind them all is someoneā€™s ego that cannot be fed in any other way.I suppose we should hope that someone actually benefits in the end?? At this rate sausage rock will be a music genre.

The queen of COUNTRY MUSIC is back at number 89!! Who doesn't love DOLLY?! NO ONE!!

avatar

that's funny you mention dolly parton, around this time in america back in 1992, whitney houston's 'i will always love you' would be locked @ the #1 spot on hot 100 and dolly wrote that song. fun times! 1 of my very fave hot 100 chart runs

I really miss WHITNEY..can't believe she is gone!! as much as i love DOLLY, her song I will always love you was better sung by Whitney...

NAT KING COLE finally broke the Top 50 this year...About time..he so deserves it...THE XMAS SONG is such a great Xmas single...

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

have you ever checked out natalie cole's album 'unforgettable with love'? i had it back in the day, huge success over here! she did some remakes of her dad's and even a duet with him on 'unforgettable'...she won some grammys for it and it went 7x plat. over here.

avatar

thierry henon

2

I love UNFORGETTABLE ! at the time, the single was so different of what French people were hearing on the radio...it wasn't a massive hit there and really never understood the reason why??!! but learned a few years ago that the single made the TOP 15 in THE USA and the album was massive....

Really hope to see MEGHAN TRAINOR back into the Top 5 next week..once the XMAS songs are out of the Top 100...

avatar

Sunshine Gal

1

did you see when her & tay-tay would be battling for the #1 spot on the hot 100 chart? back when 'all about the bass' & 'shake it off' would be neck and neck for the top 2 spots on the chart.

avatar

thierry henon

2

i did indeed and i am so happy to see her back on track with her new single...and will chart even higher, i reckon, after Xmas time...

Getting proper boring now.
Although what is interesting, is that some of the classics that have been gaining higher and higher annual peaks as the years of streaming go on, are now on the way down (attaining lower peaks again).

Some examples:
Fairytale, Shaky, Band Aid, Andy Williams, Chris Rea, and probably a few more.
They're also starting to have fewer weeks on chart each year, going down from 6 with a mid-November start. I'd call them the A-list (along with some still attaining top peaks: Wham/Mariah).

The B-list are still on the way up or equalling previous peaks: Brenda Lee, Bobby Helms, Michael Bubble.

The C-list (those that previously failed to make the top 75 that now scrape or just fail to make the top 40), are still attaining higher peaks:
Let It Snow (many versions), Christmas Song, Burl Ives etc.

itā€™s beyond weird that bad bunny was the most streamed artist of 2022 globally, but has struggled to get even one charting song over here since mia (only charted cause of drake). un verano sin ti only got to 70-something in the uk albums chart too while the rest of the world were loving it! oh well, iā€™m british and i at least appreciate it, i got the cd for christmas. lol. hope you had an amazing christmas over in argentina and i bet youā€™re still reeling over the world cup win!

HeyNoodle!! How are you mate! Its totally true what you say, though he isn't of my fave artists , he has exploded in America, LatinAmerica and some other parts of the world.
Yesss, absolutely, we are still crazy about the World Cup victory, people got really insane! šŸ˜„šŸ˜„. Thanks for the good vibes and enjoy this festive season !!!

Top 40 Rankingsā€¦ but for all the Christmas Number Ones in the last 40 years!

Any guesses as to where I think it went wrong?

Seriously though, some of these are so nostalgic! šŸ„²

Yes when they stopped Physical Copies and replaced them with Streaming and Downloads.
You Tube you don't have to buy it and just pay Ā£9:99 a month and have access to Millions of Songs.
How does the Charts work on that method.
Know one buys Singles anymore cause Real Music fans want a physical Copy.
The Singles Charts don't mean anything now and The Album Charts are so different.

Did any of you notice the recent article & the radio remind us that LadBaby now have more Christmas Number Ones than The Beatlesā€¦ that isnā€™t really a fair comparison at all, is it?!

The Beatles are legends whose music will be discussed, played & an inspiration for many generations to come!

LadBaby will generally be forgotten about in a decade outside of throwback Christmas chartsā€¦

im not a fan of the beatles, but obviously thier music was good enough to get 4 xmas #1s and to be so infuential, seems very unfair for the record to be taken away from them by some tory frauds

they get forgotten by the 1st of january and unfortuantely were reminded of them every christmas. well they have that record they were so obsessed with, maybe they'll f*ck off for good now

Are they really Tory? Everything about that track screams 'not Tory', surely? Foodbanks barely even existed before the Tories came to power. But people do just keep on voting for them despite how obviously appalling an idea that is, so who knows!

C

5

Agree. If they do f*ck off for good after this, then we'll know it wasn't about "Charity" at all, but just to beat the Beatles record.

or maybe theyā€™d realise that the public are fed up with them..? they recorded their lowest sales week ever this week

The question is, how far will they fall in the next chart, if they even stay in it at all? šŸ˜©

Also, I think this was their lowest opening sales week yet, so maybe theyā€™ll finally stop since theyā€™d rather have 5/5 than 5/6!

avatar

Geraint Gill

1

Yes, I heard Jack on Radio 1 telling us that LadBaby had more Christmas No. 1s than the Beatles, but they are mere nothings next to the Beatles! I imagine Food Aid will plummet out of the Top 40 after next week anyway.

avatar

Piran

1

It's still doing very well on iTunes, so that may give it another week in the Top 40 despite the Christmas takeover, but there are indeed not even remotely close to The Beatles! šŸ˜©

avatar

Piran

1

The Beatles clearly were good enough to get 17 #1 singles in total (I think only Elvis has more), spread across 65 weeks. That's about an average of four weeks per #1 single!

LadBaby only have five in total, not even a third of that figure, with none of them spending a second week in the Top 25, let alone at the top! I think it should be obvious as to whose legacy is bigger.

Besides, you can't base an artist's success on one particular week of the year! šŸ˜

, given how well the remixes of ā€˜Christmas Drillingsā€™ sold in the past couple days, I think they couldā€™ve potentially stopped LadBaby if they were released earlier in the week. :/

iā€™ve been too generous about this recently.

it shouldnā€™t be as deep as it is, but as much as i donā€™t care about the charts anymore, i care about other peopleā€™s feelings. and everyone hereā€™s probably feeling like at the moment, because ladbaby just stole christmas for a 5th year in a row.

the christmas chart race is not just any chart, but a british tradition. the last time weā€™ve had an original christmas number 1 was in 2017 - since then, weā€™ve had two tory-supporting b*st*rds claiming the christmas number 1 without giving anyone else a chance! iā€™m happy people are donating to the trussel trust as itā€™s an incredible charity, but 1) you can donate directly and even give more than just 99p, which is far more important; 2) these little greeds are STEALING a fraction of the purchases. they canā€™t stand the thought of change either - as soon as wham caught up, they released remixes the following morning. now if thatā€™s not desperation, what is??

it also doesnā€™t help that the song is the same as the previous four - a cynical attempt at novelty with sausage roll references thrown in. granted, itā€™s better than last yearā€™s car crash, but considering thatā€™s the worst number 1 of all time itā€™s not hard to be better. comparing the ukā€™s food bank situation with ethiopiaā€™s crisis is not it as well, they had it far, FAR worse.

i wanted raye or the sidemen to get there. no, actually, scrap that; i wanted ANYONE to get there other than ladbaby, and iā€™m certain yā€™all are thinking similarly. the sidemen put out a post on instagram saying that theyā€™re thankful of the support regardless of the final position - thatā€™s a great attitude to have as a charting artist. also, they encouraged direct donations to the charity they were donating to from the proceeds of christmas drillings. thatā€™s saying a f*ckton!! meanwhile, ladbaby support the conservatives who are the reason food banks exist, and donā€™t donate the whole thing!

tl;dr - the christmas charts donā€™t matter anymore. ladbaby took the tradition away.

avatar

Piran

I did have a long rant like this written, but tbh, I realised that would be giving LadBaby even more attention when they've had more than enough anyway. :/

Chart talk aside, I hope everyone here has a wonderful Christmas or anything else they may be celebrating instead. :)

In particular, I want to say a MASSIVE thank you to all the frontline health workers who may be reading this!

Instead of being with family or friends on Christmas Day, theyā€™ll be working tirelessly to save the lives of many British people, despite the unimaginably tough conditions they face.

You are all absolute heroes to our country! šŸŒˆ
