I read that 'Hand in glove' by the smiths (not the version with Sandie Shaw) reached a peak position of 124. Since only the top 100 is published, how is it possible to verify what I read?
Yolanda Merkel
It's time for either Mariah or Wham to get that #1. This is getting so boring and repetitive.

As a mariah fan I still support ACR, without it the charts will be STALEEE

if artists are only allowed 3 songs in the chart how come justin bieber has 5
Foxes
Bieber has 'Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree' at #21, 'Lonely' at #42 and 'Mistletoe' at #43.
Shawn Mendes has 'Monster' at #26, which has Bieber as a lead artist but counts towards Shawn's total because he's the primary lead artist and it was released on his label.

just listened to holiday and itâs really really cool, i hope it reaches top 40 sometime soon. strong 7/10 for now.
also have you heard âtyler herroâ by jack harlow? thatâs really underrated and i donât want jack to be a one hit wonder, especially when that song is awesome!
eternalricardo
Hey dude, Glad you also like 'Holiday'! I'd personally give it an 7 or 8.
I have heard Tyler Herro, I thought it was pretty nice but it has way less hit potential than Whats Poppin imo. I'm pretty sure Jack Harlow's releasing an album soon, so maybe he can get another hit from there :)
Blank
I gaurantee at least one of the Christmas #2s (All I Want, Last or Fairytale) will be #1 this year. First week of Jan, when they all sell most is Positions' first ACR week...
More than one could do it if it drops before the ACR week.

CZ
Charting Zebra
The charts have been largely a listening chart for a long time. To make them relevant as a something close to what the sales chart was is to consider what is the equivalent to a sale of a physical record and download of an mp3?
As an example, only allow the first 30 plays by a single user to count as a sale. This would stop the endless plays through time that would never have counted towards anything before in the days of just mp3 or physical record sales.
While I have Spotify, I still listen to most of my old music as mp3s and none of those listens will ever contribute to the charts.
Foxes
The charts already limit it to 10 streams per song for 1 person each day.
CZ
Charting Zebra
It's a start. But an physical sale was kind of always front loaded and the amount you played it weeks, months and years later never counted towards chart "sales" like they do now
Foxes
The way I see it, that's because the artist only got money when you bought the single, whereas with streaming an artist gets money with every single play.
CZ
Charting Zebra
Fair point maybe they should get the same amount then when those equivalent sales by a single listener are reached? And nothing after...
Foxes
Personally I'd like to see chart sales based off how much money is actually made, so for example Apple Music would have a streams:sales ratio of 150:1 since that's roughly how many streams are needed to equal the same amount of money on that platform as 1 sale, Spotify would be 200:1, YouTube would be 1,500:1, etc.
Joshua Sombra
I bet songs like 'Diamonds' by Sam Smith and 'Golden' by Harry Styles will rebound to a higher peak after the Christmas songs have had it's time to chart.
GS
Yeah, that always happens on the first chart of the year
Tiago The Man Cruz
It's so close yet again. It's gotta be this year. Really hope it's number 1 next week.
GS
If OCC don't screw it up, Mariah has it in the bag.
Piran
My thoughts & observations on the UK charts as always...

Piran
Itâs getting worse for me with every listen too. :/
Yolanda Merkel
lmao. that was on point.
DamiĂĄn
Hahaha...really agree with you mate!! Can't believe that with so many good songs and artists out there, Positions , a totally mediocre song, it's still number 1! Wake up UK!!!.
Piran
Yeah, not only is âPositionsâ souring on me more with every listen, but itâs blocking some the best festive classics of all-time from getting there, all because of a rule which makes literally zero sense. :/
Piran
Haha, yeah, I donât think anyone is happy with this new chart! :P
Piran
The âOfficialâ part of this chartâs name really needs to be reconsidered! Sorry. :/
Mrsliver
AIWFCIY is beating positions in both steaming and sales and yet it was still blocked I will never understand ACR fully
Rector
ACR = manipulation = inaccurate
DK
Dave Knight
Quite remarkable at least 15 old Christmas songs in the top 40, which are the same ones that make the charts each year. Does people delete them from their systems each January? Which is why they got to buy them again? How else can a single become a hit year after year?
Rector
Streaming
JB
Jack Brooks
It's because of the way streaming "sales" are counted toward the chart.
David N'jama
it's Streaming. people just search and play directly without buying and it impact the charts
Keybasher
They've decided that it's not good enough to count sales of music they need to count every time you play the CD (stream(. Thank god the charts made more sense when I was a little un.
Although the official sales chart doesn't make for much better reading, it's better.
DK
Dave Knight
Shouldn't be allowed to influence the chart in my opinion. Physical sales should only count, or purchased downloads. But preferably physical.
Foxes
There are dozens of people still buying physical singles. Dozens!
DK
Dave Knight
But thats the problem, it used to be hundreds of thousands.
Keybasher
Which is why streaming's allowed in.
It would be completely unrepresentative of anything anybody actually listened to if it wasn't.
DK
Dave Knight
But thats the awful way things have evolved isnt it? What I mean is if downloading and streaming didnt exist we all would still be happily buying the physical product. We live in a throw away society today, and it seems youngsters today dont really have their heart and soul in the artist or music. When I was growing up I took an equal interest in the artwork of the album, lyric sheet, the artist the whole works, not just the songs. Artists when I was growing up had at least one album out a year and probably 4 or 5 singles per album, and they kept going for decades not months. To me the music industry is in a terrible state and I certainly wouldnt want want to be growing up today. I am proud to say I grew up with the best artists and best music. I think the best 2 decades were 70's and 80's, but the single best 10 years were probably 73 - 83. Streaming if you think about it is no better than waiting to hear your favourite song come on the radio and recording it to tape to play when you like, with no real compassion towards artist or song, compared to putting your effort into buying it. Yes of course we can buy a download, but its not money very well spent is it? In my opinion to get people actually into the music again we need to wipe out streaming and downloading. But what do I know?
DK
Dave Knight
The problem is artists are getting a raw deal when it comes to streaming, they simply are not getting paid what they should be. If you are a fan of someone do the right thing and buy the blinking CD.
DK
Dave Knight
Well I am 51 years old and would prefer to buy a vinyl single or cd single but the very fact its almost impossible to buy any how can my favourite artists have a hit single anymore? For example I wanted to buy the latest AC/DC single on vinyl ideally but would have settled on a cd single but I cant get either, so how are bands like AC/DC meant to get a hit single if that particular fan base cant purchase the product in a physical format? Now you see what I mean about streaming isnt a fair reflection on what the potential hits that could be in the official top 100. The majority of the charts are made up of a younger audience who are into downloading and streaming which in turn has ommited the variety we used to have when the physical product reigned as the only way to obtain singles.
Piran
As for something non-festive, here are some throwbacks...
#1: Ed Sheeran - Bloodstream (2014)
#2: Avicii - Wake Me Up (2013)
#3: Icona Pop ft Charli XCX - I Love It (2012)
#4: Pitbull ft Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer - Give Me Everything (2011)
#5: Puff Daddy & Faith Evans ft 112 - I'll Be Missing You (1997)
#6: Katy Perry - Teenage Dream (2010)
#7: Katy Perry - Last Friday Night [T.G.I.F.] (2011)
#8: Ariana Grande ft Mac Miller - The Way (2013)
#9: Mariah Carey ft Miguel - #beautiful (2013)
#10: Bridgit Mendler - Ready Or Not (2012)

Okay, but shouldn't All I Want For Christmas Is You be off ACR?
I thought if a song on ACR's streams increased by 20% in a week, it would be taken off of it the next week.

This is possibly one of the best examples of what the streaming era has done to the charts. Another invasion of old Christmas songs that will last a month long and Mariah Carey an annual Christmas Number 1 unless some forgettable novelty act like LadBaby pips her to the post again.
Cameron
I'm not interested in the charts being exciting or enjoyable, I just want them to be accurate
Joshua Sombra
I don't think they are accurate anymore because of the 3 song rule and ACR it is not as good as it was before ACR and the 3 song rule was introduced. Hope they make change.
Piran
How the heck does Mariah both sell & stream more than Ariana, but the former is charting lower than the latter?! >:(
Mrsliver
Because of three particular letters
Cameron
Because All I Want For Christmas Is You has been around for 26 years and Positions has been around for 6 weeks lol
Piran
Again... bias. :/
R
RIME
Accelerated Chart Ratio, aka ACR. AIWFCIY's streams count as half of the sales units that they would normally because the song's old. I despise the policy, it does no good to the charts.
Piran
I know, haha. I was asking more how OCC can somehow still think itâs a good rule to have! :P
Mrsliver
To stop album tracks looking back on charts from 2016 and 17 people were complaining about them
Piran
I donât know... I think there have been more ACR complaints that album bomb complaints! :P
JB
Jack Brooks
Because streaming massively accelerates trends that started in the download era like every song from Ed Sheeran's album swallowing up the Top 20 or festive favourites taking up the entire chat every December. As a result the OCC have come up with more convoluted rules on what can qualify etc... but this arguably makes things even worse because the charts become less of an accurate reflection with every manipulation. I don't really know what the answer is.

WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (04/12/2020 - 10/12/2020)
đ´ (Negative)
1) Serious question⌠why did âPositionsâ have to tie âThank U, Nextâ as Arianaâs longest running #1 single?! For as much as the title track of her last album has got a surprisingly low replay factor for me, at least that song had some of her most honest & personal writing to date. It doesnât deserve to lose that honour to something as uninspired as this!
2) What arguably frustrated me even more is that if âPositionsâ gets just one more week at the #1, itâll pass âHead & Heartâ (one of the most uplifting songs Iâve ever heard, no exaggeration!), as the longest consecutive leader of 2020! It would just to see the latter lose out on that title in the final month of the year to someone who has already seen huge chart success before, but given that âPositionsâ isnât going on ACR for at least another month & most of the songs below it are already on permanent ACR, Iâm not getting my hopes up.
3) While weâre on the topic of ACR⌠this is just one of those weeks which highlights just how unrepresentative this chart can be around the festive period! You wouldnât exactly hear the Premier League say; âSo, if a team have been at the top of the league for ten weeks in total & they donât win three consecutive games, the number of points they have in the table are halved.â. .. so why should OCC be applying an incredibly similar rule on songs in the charts? Itâs been proven time & time again to be ineffective (look at the longevity for âBlinding Lightsâ, âDance Monkeyâ, âPerfectâ, even âMr Brightsideâ!) & itâs about time the rule was dropped now, knowing that weâll never get another âáâ scenario again, nor anything even coming close to it!
4) Christmas Songs: âRockinâ Around The Christmas Treeâ by Justin Bieber. The only saving grace for this being here is that the original version is charting higher than it!
đ (Mixed)
1) I remember that âAll I Want For Christmas Is Youâ would always re-enter the Top 40 in the first week of December when I first started to listen to Radio 1âs chart show, so to see it in the runner-up position already is truly promising! However, I canât call this a positive point just yet, because arguably the most iconic Christmas song of all-time doesnât deserve to peak at #2 for the fifth year in the total (& fourth consecutive); it deserves to go all the way to the top! It seems promising that it could get there next week though, as long as we donât get another âRiverâ mishap here.
2) â34+35â somehow found its way back into the Top 10! Iâm not particularly sure why outside of maybe the official video, but hey, at least itâs a better single than its predecessor.
3) Speaking of Ariana, âSanta Tell Meâ replaced âPOVâ as her third charting entry⌠so thatâs one awesome tune knocking out another awesome tune!
Gary Barlow took the #1 on the albums chart! I donât mind his solo work, but he was better as part of Take That & I just wouldâve been more satisfied seeing Steps or Miley Cyrus take it instead.
4) Christmas Songs: âItâs Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmasâ, âI Wish It Could Be Christmas Everydayâ, âDriving Home For Christmasâ, âThis Christmasâ, âAll Youâre Dreaming Ofâ, âItâs The Most Wonderful Time Of The Yearâ, âHolly Jolly Christmasâ, âHappy Xmas [War Is Over]â & âJingle Bell Rockâ.
đ˘ (Positive)
1) âDynamiteâ stayed in the Top 40 thanks to it coming off ACR this past week! I expect it to drop out of the chart entirely later this month though.
2) Christmas Songs: âLast Christmasâ, âFairytale Of New Yorkâ, âMerry Christmas Everyoneâ, âDo They Know Itâs Christmas?â, âSanta Tell Meâ, âStep Into Christmasâ, âRockinâ Around The Christmas Treeâ by Brenda Lee, âUnderneath The Treeâ (new peak!), âMerry Xmas Everybodyâ, âOne More Sleepâ & âWonderful Christmastimeâ.
Thanks for reading everyone! Have a good weekend. :)

River caught me off guard toođđ
My favorite song of the year is- no I can't choose.
Favorite album, Without Fear. Whatever Dermot does đŻ
Folklore also hit home.
Also tell me what you think about Three.Two.One by Lennon Stella
Piran
I honestly just thought âRiverâ would only be a thing last year & everyone would forget about it in 2020, but apparently not! :P
âWithout Fearâ is indeed an amazing album, but as my profile picture shows, âFolkloreâ saved this year for me (although âFuture Nostalgiaâ is certainly up there). :)
Oh, so itâs apparently a full album & not a song? Hmm... I like a lot of Lennon Stellaâs music, so I look forward to checking that one out! :D

This chart should show the issue with including streams in the chart to anyone. Yes we occasionally got old christmas songs resurrecting themselves during downloads era, but I honestly think weâre getting to the point a release eligibility cut-off should be considered for charts.
Itâs meant to represent the biggest music now, yet here we are a few weeks from the end of 2020 and the chart is awash with 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s Christmas songs. Itâs utterly insane and itâs understandable why people think modern music is poor when the chart thatâs supposed to track sales of music has become one that tracks replay value of music - two completely different things.
Which also comes back to the general whiteness of this year's official chart, perhaps it is actually including youtube streams and spotify and similar streams that is causing this. Back to sales please. Replay value is not the same as good current pop music.
It also must make new artists wonder what the point of releasing anything in December is if itâs going to get swallowed up by streams of ancient songs, which canât be good for new music overall and might explain Whoopty knocking on Top 10. Absolutely livid at the state of this supposed top 40 that is instead just measuring replay value of christmas songs, itâs as daft as tracking how many times people played a CD when everyone had them.
This issue has been evident with the tik tok problem all year, but itâs really become evident with christmas looming that something needs done.
The way that is compiled needs a complete overhaul and release date caps on re-entries would be a good place to start if youâre going to include streams or even if youâre not.
Rob Parkinson
Its far from perfect but surely back in the day, how many times you played a cd would mean how much you actually liked it? Streaming is the way forward as why should a song that is bought and listened to just once compare to a song that is bought and played 1000 times? Surely the song which has been played more is more 'popular' whilst the current charts are not perfect they are most certainly heading in a better way for popularity although I'm pretty sure that many youngsters out there just pop a song on repeat to effect its chart position, but the charts have always been to show popularity. The amount of plays compared to the amount of buys surely shows popularity more, take the recent charity singles which people buy, not so many people listen even when bought showing a huge entry then disappearing in a week or 2.

Blank
Great after completing some chart research and finding out a great stat!
yianang
Hello, Piran. I'm OK. I hope that you feel better soon. Have a nice weekend!
Piran
Hey Yianang! :)
Iâm not bad today! Thanks, you too.
Piran
Oh really, what was the stat? :)
Blank
There are almost exactly 13,000 artists to have hit singles. The median number of hits is 1, meaning over half (6,500) of them have had just one hit.
The average is 3 to the nearest whole number. I found that astounding. More detailed work will follow regarding, when and what positions those 1-hit artists peaked at, and accounting for artists (e.g. groups) that contain more successful hit acts or a soloist from a more successful group. One example of those is Andrew Ridgely. A one-hit-wonder as a solo artist.

Really glad that Kylie's version of Santa Baby re enters at 57!!
Piran
Thatâs amazing for Kylie! It means that she might get a Top 40 appearance in 2020 after all then. :)
Piran
Oh wow, how long did it take you to research all of that? :P
DamiĂĄn
Really?? Im not too hopeful about it, its original peak was 38
Blank
There are faster ways to have found out that single stat, but the method I used was built to be a more powerful research tool enabling hundreds more undiscovered chart facts. At 8 to 10 hours a day every day, most weeks 7 days and some 5-6 days a week, it took both lockdowns and the bit inbetween! Been working on it solidly since March!
Someone published the writers list in the last Guinness hit singles book, it took them 7 years to research, so just over 7 months doesn't seem so bad :-)
Blank
So about 1850 hours!
Piran
I make that out to be about two & a half months! :P
Piran
Thatâs some impressive research! :D
I donât have all that free time spare sadly, but if I did, Iâd totally do something similar, haha.
Piran
I think itâs #36 in todayâs update, so thatâll hopefully be a new peak for her on Friday! :D
DamiĂĄn
Wowww, that's good news!! Thank you Piran for the info!!

Jack Brooks
On a similar note the fact that 'Wonderful Christmastime' has re-entered the Top 40 now means that Paul McCartney has appeared on a Top 40 record in SEVEN consecutive decades!
Piran
Yeah, as far as Iâm aware, heâs the only artist ever to have done this. :)
Piran
Youâre welcome! :D
