about to have pitchforks and torches pointed at me for this take:

i will always root for england, and i hope this will be our year for the taking, but i honestly can’t stand three lions. how many more times will we have to sing “it’s coming home” before the chant stops cursing us? i feel like it backfires everytime

still better than vindaloo though 🤢

i do not understand how 'right here' is the least successful charting single from becky hill's new album...? i mean i still have hope for it bc it's blatantly one of her best songs. the only other one touching it is disconnect

good luck babe new peak at 13! chappell roan's obviously having a massive era but idk none of the other songs are topping good luck babe for me, genuinely one of the best pop songs of the decade so far

NEW Chart Review 21/06/24

Oh, hey. I'm on holiday. Couldn't you guess by how late I've uploaded this? Only took me a couple of hours. 😓

As you can probably tell, this review is gonna be a little shorter today. And next week. And from now on, actually. You see, after the OCC decided to backhand me across the face when posting my rankings for the last couple of weeks, I've chosen to redesign my reviews somewhat. Starting from this week, here's the order of how I'll do all this risky business:

Opening noodlings, No.1 singles and album chart talk, other Top 40 new entries, chart movements elsewhere, the rest of the newbies, next week's hopefuls, A NEW RANKING SYSTEM, my thoughts on every new Top 100 hit this week, and P.S. message.

Got it? Good. I'll end up forgetting by August anyway. And the album chart is as horrible as always. Does it look like I want to talk about The Tortured Poets Department again? Because I don't. At least her touring like crazy has meant that Fortnight sneaks back into the Top 10 again. That's nice, especially because I can't get it out of my head due to Radio 1 jamming it in my brain every hour.

But that's not important. The No.1 single this week though, IS.

Two weeks is all Eminem is capable of managing, I'm afraid, as Houdini gets whipped down to 3rd place to make way for the great Sabrina Carpenter invasion. Even though her album isn't out 'til August. What's more interesting is the fact that her old chart-topper Espresso hasn't regained pole position. New single Please Please Please has ended up at the summit. It's a pretty odd set of circumstances that's come along with the public's swift change of preferance, even though you'd think Espresso would be No.1 due to the scorching hot weather outside. Turns out we're all wrong as Please Please Please sounds like something Miley Cyrus would make before indulging in her 2015 prog-rock escapades, only it's more pop-orientated. And better. Not as good as her other omnipresent smash but there you go. THIS is the song of the summer, no matter how many faded singers from defunct pop groups tell you otherwise.

As for the rest of the Top 40 and it seems I'm not the only one to go on holiday this week. The chart's decided to pack it's bags and deport itself to Antarctica for a week, meaning we've ended up with more re-entries than new entries (although I don't think Disturbed's The Sound of Silence really counts, does it?). Thus, I will officially grant my honest praises to Chappell Roan for upsetting the applecart and nicking a 2nd Top 40 hit with HOT TO GO!, which is basically just one long High School Musical cheerleader chant set to music. Only a lot more manageable than HSM. And sadly not played on Radio 1's Chart Show. It thus joins Good Luck, Babe in the upper regions, and with Red Wine Supernova also in the current Spotify Top 50 (last time I checked anyway), you can bet your life she won't be going away in a hurry. Unlike the song involved in this next paragraph.

Now as you know, whenever a football tournament occurs, something very peculiar happens to the British public. They go out and stream Three Lions. Originally conceived as an anthem for drunken dads to gurgle along to in 1996 by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner, along with Britpop chuggers The Lightning Seeds, it has of course become synonymous with the England team in internatio football. And it re-enters every single time they play in a tournament. I still have PTSD flashbacks from that day in 2018 when poor George Ezra had to play second fiddle to a song that was only marginally better than his tripe. But I digress. It all kickstarts again this year as Three Lions pops up at 32, but try not to get confident guys. Have you seen the England team in the Euros this year? I'm surprised Gareth Southgate hasn't spontaneously combusted on the spot yet.

Elsewhere in the Top 100, Tommy Richman is a potential 1-hit wonder, his followup to MILLION DOLLAR BABY entering at a less than satisfactory 48, Byron Messia fares little better, Jordan Adetunji does alright for himself at 55, a song called Kisses has risen a lot to 58, a Kid LAROI album track pops up in the 60s, Luke Combs spawns a couple borers from his album, Pozer doesn't do very well, Dominic Fike has little luck, Meghan Trainor also gets a couple of newbies, some guy called Adam Port appears for the first time, the guy who "remixed" that Disturbed song is here, and cassö does some 90 places worse than his previous single. Add him to the list of dance acts that don't do anything then.

Next week sees new albums from Gracie Abrams, Kygo, The Mysterines, Lola Young and a greatest hits from 2002's finest, Avril Lavigne, meanwhile we get to see Headie One, Post Malone, Rudimental, Griff, Fontaines D.C. and Rudimental all do worse than you think they would. Also, Perrie's second single is out today. I predict it to go in at No.19. Knowing my luck, it will end up at 31 or something stupid like that. Coldplay are back as well. Don't think I asked, to be fair.

AMAZING TIER:

Chappell Roan [13], Taylor Swift ft. Post Malone [10], RAYE [38] (The jazz-like outro puts this up here.), Shaboozey [5] (I'm probably the only person here who loves this.)

GREAT TIER:

Chappell Roan [39] (I get why Radio 1 didn't want to touch it, but you could just skip her other hit and play this. It isn't rocket science.), Charli XCX [28], Sabrina Carpenter [2], Billie Eilish [12]

GOOD TIER:

Kendrick Lamar [21], Sabrina Carpenter [1], Tems [36], Dua Lipa [31], The Blessed Madonna/Clementine Douglas [25], Billie Eilish [4], Taylor Swift [18]

OK TIER:

Billie Eilish [20], Tommy Richman [11], Eminem [3], Artemas [34]

AVERAGE TIER:

Noah Kahan [27], Dasha [9] (SHE'S NOT NO.10 ANYMORE! REJOICE!!), Harry Styles [33], Mark Ambor [17], Taylor Swift [14] (It'll never stop dropping at this rate.), Central Cee ft. Lil Baby [7], Zach Bryan [29], Teddy Swims [26]

DISLIKE TIER:

Myles Smith [6], Hozier [16], Post Malone ft. Morgan Wallen [8] (Funny how radio stations seem so welcoming to Morgan now despite the... i n c i d e n t), Flex (UK) ft. Nate Dogg [37]

BAD TIER:

NewEra [30], Benson Boone [15], Baddiel/Skinner/Lightning Seeds [32] (Don't get your hopes up lads.), Badger [35]

AWFUL TIER:

Disturbed [40], David Guetta & One Republic [23], Benson Boone [19], Michael Marcagi [22], Teddy Swims [24]

And now, my thoughts on the new 'hits':

Tommy Richman - DEVIL IS A LIE [48] (Ehh, to be honest.)

Byron Messia/Lil Baby - Choppa [51] (Not a patch on Talibans, that's for sure.)

Jordan Adetunji - KEHLANI [55] (More rap/trap. WOOOOOWWW. 😒)

The Kid LAROI - NIGHTS LIKE THIS [69] (86 seconds of TikTok noodlings. Boring as sin.)

Luke Combs - The Man He Sees In Me [78] (Zach Bryan does it slightly better.)

Pozer - I'M TRYNA [81] (Eh. Just eh.)

Dominic Fike - misses [83] (This song ends by the time I wash my hands after using the toilet. A whopping 74 seconds.)

Meghan Trainor ft. Niecy Nash - I Wanna Thank Me [86] (It's alright. Prefer Been Like This though from the album.)

Adam Port/Stryv/Keinemusik/Orso/Malachiii - Move [89] (So who sings this dance song again?)

Luke Combs - Remember Me That Way [91] (I couldn't care less about this.)

cassö & Jazzy ft. Headie One - Zeros [92] (Should've stayed in the clubs as far as I'm concerned.)

Meghan Trainor - Whoops [94] (This though, isn't.)

CYRIL - Stumblin' In [98] (Don't care, didn't ask, file this as intolerable EDM.)

And with that, I'm off. About time too.

(P.S. This message is completely worthless this week.)

Great recap, as always.

I guess a shorter way to sum up the Top 10 movements of the week would be:

Billie Eilish lost her Lunch and Taylor Swift is to blame...

avatar

itsnoodleszn_

1

nah, billie eilish lost her lunch to those feathered birds she’s singing about at number 4. in other words, birds of a feather overtook lunch as the big hit from hmhas, but i can’t complain because i love every song on that album.

That works too, noodles, although I kind of enjoyed my dad joke. Or maybe it was a grandpa joke, I guess. Enjoy your week!

Si glad to see Tove Lo and SG Lewis new song in your chart mate. Can't understand why she never gets a top 100 entry in UK??

Neither. She hasn't had one since 2019. :/

I’m actually surprised at how much stability ‘Without Me’ has had since Eminem released ‘Houdini’.

I thought the former was going to plum it down the chart after its re-entry but it actually looks to be sticking around! Not complaining though.

The usual rankings will be delayed until tomorrow as I’m currently in London (won’t take me very long to do as there’s only one new arrival and two returns).

Also, can we please get ‘Good Luck, Babe!’ Into the Top 10 later in the summer? Still top of the list for me! 🥺
