Sabrina Carpenter is first artist in 71 YEARS to spend 20 weeks at Number 1 in a single year

Plus big moves this week for Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, Gracie Abrams, Gigi Perez and Charli xcx & Ariana Grande.
Sabrina Carpenter

Sabrina Carpenter has clearly got the Taste for making UK chart history. Today, she becomes the first artist in 71 years of chart history to spend 20 weeks at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart in a calendar year.

Taste spends an eighth consecutive week at Number 1 today, becoming 2024’s longest-running Number 1 single, overtaking Noah Kahan’s Stick Season. This means that Sabrina has now logged 20 weeks atop the Official Singles Chart this year with Taste, Espresso (7 weeks at Number 1) and Please Please Please (5 weeks at Number 1). She’s only the second artist in Official UK Chart history to manage 20 weeks at Number 1 in a calendar year.

The last, and only other, artist to do so was crooner Frankie Laine all the way back in 1953, during the infancy of the Official Singles Chart. Reaching 28 weeks in total at Number 1 that year, Laine spent 18 non-consecutive weeks at Number 1 with I Believe (still the all-time record for the UK’s longest-running Number 1 single), two weeks with Hey Joe and eight with Answer Me.

And if that wasn’t enough, Sabrina also secures a fourth Top 10 hit from Short N’ Sweet today, with Bed Chem entering the chart at Number 9.

Rising to a brand-new peak of Number 2 today is Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’s Die With A Smile, while Gigi Perez’s Sailor Song jumps three to Number 3, with both becoming viable challengers for the top spot next week.

Huge congrats are in order to Gracie Abrams, who caps off an extraordinary breakout year with her first Top 10 single, I Love You, I’m Sorry (4), while Sonny Fodera, Jazzy and D.O.D jump into the Top 5 with Somedays (5), becoming the first Top 5 hit for both Sonny Fodera and D.O.D, and Jazzy’s third.

Chappell Roan’s kitschy HOT TO GO! rebounds four, up to a new peak (6), while Charli xcx and Ariana Grande’s Sympathy is a knife remix enters the Top 10 (7), marking Charli’s 9th Top 10 single and Ariana’s 23rd. Charli also sees Apple rebound 15 places (11) following its remix with The Japanese House, and 360 is back in the chart (20) after its remix with Robyn and Yung Lean.

KSI and Trippie Redd’s Thick Of It jumps six to Number 8, becoming KSI’s ninth and Trippie Redd’s first Top 10 single.

Celebrating Thick Of It hitting the Top 10 with his brand-new Official Top 10 Award, KSI tells Official Charts:

“Ladies and gentleman, Thick Of It is now my ninth Top 10 single. To all the haters – haha! Stay mad!

“To all my fans, thank you so much. You guys have been amazing, having nine Top 10 singles is crazy! Big up Official Charts for giving me this lovely Official Top 10 Award!”

Adam Port, Stryv and KeineMusik’s Move leaps 12 places to a new peak of Number 10 (earning all three artists their first Top 10 hit), following the release of a brand-new remix featuring Camila Cabello

Pop princess Addison Rae continues to rise with Diet Pepsi, up one this week (14), while Billie Eilish’s Wildflower (18) lifts three to a new peak.

As UK audiences continue to obsess over Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Crowded House’s 1986 classic Don’t Dream It’s Over is up five to Number 32. The track previously peaked at Number 25 in 1996.

And finally, BLACKPINK member JENNIE makes history today as the highest-charting female Korean solo artist with her latest single Mantra debuting at Number 37, overtaking BLACKPINK bandmate Jisoo, who hit Number 38 last year with FLOWER.

Given "Taste"'s success, I think the next number one will more likely be "Bed Chem" or a different song than "Die with a Smile".

This week felt like a much-needed refresh.

Good to see 'Sailor Song', 'Somedays' and 'Hot To Go!' all with new peaks in the Top 10, along with 'Bed Chem' being the highest new entry of the week!
