THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT
by TAYLOR SWIFT
The Tortured Poets Department is the eleventh studio album by Taylor Swift, released April 19 2024 and overtook Midnights to secure the biggest opening week of any Taylor Swift album in the UK, according to Official Charts data.
Swift announced the record at the 66th annual GRAMMY Awards on February 4 2024, as she won Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights, her chart-topping tenth studio LP. Midnights was also named Album of the Year at the ceremony.
Following its announcement at the GRAMMYs, The Tortured Poets Department's artwork was posted to social media, alongside an image of a handwritten note reading: 'And so I enter into evidence. My tarnished coat of arms. My muses, acquired like bruises. My talismans and charms. The tick, tick, tick of love bombs. My veins of pitch black ink. All's fair in love and poetry.'
The Tortured Poets Department sees Swift collaborate with Post Malone (on opening track Fortnight) and Florence & The Machine (Florida!!!).
On 26 April 2024, The Tortured Poets Department delivered Taylor Swift her 12th Number 1 album, meaning Taylor pulled level with Madonna as the female artist with the most Number 1 albums in the UK. No other artist in chart history has notched up 12 chart toppers in such quick succession either - Taylor did it in a record-breaking 11 years and 6 months, from Red in October 2012 to The Tortured Poets Department on 26 April 2024. This prolific chart-topping form surpasses even The Beatles who managed the feat in 14 years and 1 month.
On 31 December 2024, Official Charts confirmed The Tortured Poets Department to be the UK's biggest album of 2024, it was also the most-streamed album of the year, and best-selling vinyl album of 2024 too.
