ALWAYS ON MY MIND
by ELVIS PRESLEY

During 1987, Pet Shop Boys (Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe) were on something of a hot streak – or as Tennant called it, their imperial phase – having enjoyed their second UK Official Singles Chart Number 1 with It’s A Sin following 1985’s West End Girls. The duo had been asked to contribute to an ITV programme celebrating ten years since Elvis Presley’s death and had originally planned to perform a house version of his 1955 song Baby Let’s Play House, which they abandoned in favour of the Wayne Carson, Johnny Christopher, and Mark James-written Always On My Mind.

Pet Shop Boys had originally thought to pop their cover on the B-side of their single Rent, but happily decided against it and interrupted their second album Actually’s campaign by releasing it on November 30, 1987. Entering the UK Official Singles Chart at Number 4, it went up to Number to spend four weeks at the summit as 1987’s UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1.
