LadBaby make UK Official Chart history today, becoming the first act ever to claim a record five Official UK Christmas Number 1 singles, the Official Charts Company can confirm.

The duo – comprising Mark and Roxanne Hoyle – debut at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart with Food Aid featuring money-saving expert Martin Lewis, having shifted a total of over 65,000 chart units and delivered the fastest-selling single of 2022 to date. That’s a record feat to round out the 70th anniversary year of the Official Singles Chart.

Profits from the single will be split equally between food bank charity The Trussell Trust and the Band Aid Trust, given that the song is a re-interpretation of Band Aid’s 1985 Christmas Number 1 single Do They Know It’s Christmas?.

LadBaby now break a long-held chart record set by The Beatles, after equaling the Fab Four’s total of four Christmas Number 1s last year (The Beatles earned their four Christmas Number 1s non-consecutively in 1963, 1964, 1965 & 1967), the internet stars surpass The Beatles to undeniably cement their own place in Official Chart history.

Prior to Food Aid, LadBaby enjoyed festive chart-toppers with We Built This City (2018), I Love Sausage Rolls (2019), Don’t Stop Me Eatin’ (2020) and last year’s Ed Sheeran and Elton John collaboration Sausage Rolls For Everyone (2021).

Celebrating their historic achievement, LadBaby told OfficialCharts.com: "I can’t quite believe it! We’re Number 1! The charity has made it five years in a row. How have we done this again?

"We want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us for the last five years. A massive apology to The Beatles, and to all The Beatles’ fans…I’m sorry! The charity wins. The Trussell Trust gets Christmas Number 1 again!

"Thank you to all the people who have downloaded, all the people who believed in us and brought a bit of Christmas magic. We love you all. Yes mate!"

Martin Talbot, chief executive, Official Charts Company comments: "It only seems yesterday that LadBaby turned up with their first festive campaign four years ago, so it feels slightly surreal to be sending hearty congratulations on their fifth successive Official Christmas Number 1. Securing one Christmas Number 1 is a huge achievement in itself - to do it five times, in successive years, is unprecedented and frankly incredible.

"The success of Mark, Roxanne and their family is more than just a chart feat too. The work they have done to raise profile and funds for food banks generally and The Trussell Trust in particular has been immense over the past five years, especially at a time which continues to be so difficult for so many people in the UK."

In second place today are Wham! with the much-loved Last Christmas. George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley’s yuletide classic is the most-streamed track of the week in the UK, racking up 12.9 million plays.

YouTube supergroup Sidemen have put in a passionate promotional campaign for their own festive single Christmas Drillings featuring JME, and it pays off. The track, released in aid of food poverty charity FareShare, is this week’s highest climber, vaulting a staggering 38 places to Number 3. This becomes KSI, Vik and Tobi’s first UK Top 10 single as a group, could they take it all way next year? Numbers indicate it’s worth another shot!

Mariah Carey follows with All I Want For Christmas Is You (4), with Ed Sheeran and Elton John’s modern classic Merry Christmas rounding off the Christmas Top 5 (5). Meanwhile, RAYE & 070 Shake’s Escapism. becomes the highest-charting non-Christmas song this week (6).

Another new entry at Number 7 are The K*nts with their anarchic political anthem F*ck The Tories, while Central Cee’s surprise year-end single Let Go becomes his fifth Top 10 hit to date (10).

Elsewhere, Lizzo’s Amazon Music Original cover of Stevie Wonder’s Someday At Christmas rises seven places to a new peak (15).

Of course, we see another round of Christmas classics rising inside the wider Top 40 today; Dean Martin’s Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! is up one (28), Jose Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad jumps five (29), The Ronettes gain two with Sleigh Ride (30), as does Michael Bublé’s Holly Jolly Christmas (31).

Also on the up are John Lennon, Yoko Ono and their Plastic Band with Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (34), Sia’s Snowman (35), Slade’s Merry Xmas Everybody (36), Justin Bieber’s Mistletoe (38) and Darlene Love’s stirring Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) (39).

Finally, Lewis Capaldi’s Pointless (40), co-written with Ed Sheeran, re-enters the UK Top 40 having previously peaked at Number 20.

Time to get Rage Against the Machine back to the Christmas number one next year. "F*ck you Ladbaby, I won't do what you tell me."

Or get Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" to hit number one.

Paul McCartney, no. 1 at Christmas five times. Four with the Beatles and once with Wings. Should be noted the Beatles were no.1 and no.2 at Christmas twice.

By way of comparison:
Beatles: 17 number ones, 461weeks in top 75
Wham: 5 number ones, 217 weeks in top 75
Mariah: 3 number ones, 494 weeks in top 75
The above to name just a few.
Then we come to...
Ladbaby: 5 number ones, 8 weeks in top 75
Zero staying power. Not one of these "songs" gets ever gets played again after week one, maybe two. A sure bet they won't become future classics. This .

Just a correction that ‘Without You’ (1994) & ‘Against All Odds’ (2000) were also #1 hits for Mariah. :)

Oh I meant to compare the chart life of just All I Want For Christmas Is You against the chart life of all Ladbaby tracks. But I see how it came out confusing. Updated now, thanks!

I hope this is Ladbaby's last #1. No more from them, Food Aid was a bit appalling (so was Don't Stop Me Eating). Even X Factor UK has a more decent (and enjoyable) string of songs that were X-mas #1 (2005-2008). There is just no rallying against LadBaby because they seem "wholesome" (though the whole giving to charity feels a bit phony) and, as a whole, less popular than X Factor UK.

So, it was all about Chart numbers and breaking records. Completely rigged! If it weren't for this idiotic ACR rule, WHAM! would have been at number one. As for the record breaking by Ladbaby, I personally don't care at all. If some other much more decent act had claimed this record, it would have been much better and not so quickly forgettable as those.

First time they needed ACR to get to no.1. Would be 4 without it. As usual, more evidence that you need before streaming and after streaming records (though of course ironically LadBaby sold considerably more than it streamed)

I suspect they'll have one last attempt next year and then call it a day. There's no way they'll even consider releasing anything in 2024 because it's pretty much a given that there will be a "Band Aid 40" version of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" released (and for anything charitable to be released at the same time would defeat the purpose). On that note, it will be a bit surreal (but very cool) to see Band Aid and WHAM! occupying the Top 2 again in December 2024 (just as they did in December 2024) - it's almost a given that this will happen...!

While I applaud Ladbaby's efforts, their campaign this year (daily videos begging people to buy the song, multiple versions released, highlighting the close race etc. etc.) has come across as being a bit desperate and insincere (even though I know this is not the case). Also, does anyone know if the proceeds of "Last Christmas" are still donated to charity (they definitely were back in the 80s)? If so, Ladybaby's focus on the charitable aspect of their releases is completely ignoring the fact that their biggest competition is also raising money for charity. Food for thought (no pun intended whatsoever...!).

Do you not mean 1984?

What's wrong with the British people, how can they stream such trash, even if it is charity. As well make the original song a #1 all over again?

It was barely streamed, 60,000 odd purchases were made.

I think the only good thing with this are the charities, the song like all the past ones are utter rubbish, mind you I can't stand The Beatles either.

It was their choice to do this, how much money do you want? Your music only appeals to those who find this sh*t funny which is a small minority. Most of us have a sense of humour instead of wheezing at sausage rolls. We all know it's not 110% going to charity, you're getting some profit from this. You wanted to beat the record, at least the Beatles didn't put out novelty forgettable rubbish each year. Give others a chance.

The beatles could all not only sing but also write, compose and perform all their own music, actual genuine talent

"The charity wins". Who are they kidding? It's all about receiving clicks and "cementing themselves in the history books". The fact they have beaten the Beatles record makes me so angry. I mean, does anyone even listen to any of their other songs now? No, thought not.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

2

Surely using a slogan 'the charity wins' should be illegal. The charity has made a miniscule amount whereas they have made their own popularity gain again and made record companies plenty of cash. I hope in the future that they are sued for using such words and all that money actually goes to charity and they both have to find jobs

Mark and Roxanne Hoyle are just a couple of disgusting scammers, they’re not doing this for charity but to get views to their channel that they monetize and make them millionaires.

It’s disgusting that ignorant people fall for these nefarious couple, the antithesis of Xmas spirit

The comparison to The Beatles isn’t really a fair one at all, is it?!

The Beatles are legends whose music will be discussed, played & an inspiration for many generations to come!

LadBaby will generally be forgotten about in a decade outside of throwback Christmas charts…

i agree also, Ladbaby has never reached #1 during the Christmas week charts quite yet, we find out next week 30th December, as they get knocked down at Christmas, But well done to Ladbaby 5 years in a row before Christmas. but seriously Either i step into the future, or UK Singles charts for Radio 1, we not even on Christmas Eve yet i call this 23rd this year, and the Christmas Chart is complete really? always a week earlier, sorry jack the most important charts of the year is not 23rd it Next Week 30th December which counts down the Christmas data.

avatar

rayever

4

no, the actual Christmas chart is the most important. this same sh*t gets commented every year.

avatar

Bengy

2

It's the chart for Friday 23rd to Thursday 29th December. Hence it is called the "Christmas" chart.

avatar

BleeUK

-1

yeah which would be 30th December this year, counting down data from the last 7 days, 23rd to 29th December, Radio 1 Christmas Charts is always a week behind data, which runs from 16 to 22nd December only! so the ladbaby today was the run up to Christmas not at Christmas.

avatar

BleeUK

1

which means it from next week, 30th december , as you put up to 29th December (we only on 23rd not being rude, but unless everyone in a different universe from me has passed christmas day already, the last 7 days data for this week was compiled last week from 16 to 22nd December only! not Christmas, it was the run up to Christmas, which is why me and my family is looking forward to next week charts. i want to know what people are buying, streaming during the festive time not before, so it very important the 30th december this year.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

In 10 years time, you could only imagine what people will think when they see this appalling record. Thinking what were people doing? What a disgrace to even compare a YouTuber and his wife now turned youtuber too to 'The Beatles' it's a travesty for modern music. What will people think in the future when they look back at this?

avatar

rayever

2

no, the Christmas chart was this week. this is the official chart website 💀

avatar

Bengy

1

It is the chart which is available to read on Christmas Day, not what is sold on Christmas Day. That’s the way it has always been since 1952, and is referred to as the Christmas chart.

a decade?
I don’t even know who these Ladbabies are, tbh. Every year I see them holding their no.1 award and I say: “WTF are these guys”. Then I forget about their existence till the following year

avatar

BleeUK

-1

well it should always be called the Run Up to Christmas, you cant have a branded Christmas chart if it does not include the data and sales at Christmas day, so the important is 30th December not 23rd that went by yesturday, plus there is more effect on Christmas track on the Week of Christmas from 23rd to 29th December than the 16th to 22nd December, as all those people stream the festive track over Christmas Day is very important, so the 30th is important

avatar

Piran

1

True, they’ll have gone to the back of most people’s mind by the end of next week! 😅

avatar

Piran

2

I don’t know whether to laugh at it or cringe at it.

A lot of people have said “it’s beyond a joke now”, but was it even all that funny to begin with? 😭

Anyway, we unfortunately can’t undo this week’s chart! Hope you have a good Christmas Day whatever you’re doing. :)

The Beatles may only have had 4 Christmas number 1s but Paul McCartney has 7. He also topped the charts at Christmas with Wings in 1977 and as part of Band Aid 20 and the Justice Collective. So sadbaby and his idiot wife are still in 2nd place.

avatar

misterber

1

Plus Macca appeared on the B-side of the 1984 original "Do They Know It's Christmas" doing a spoken word message over the song's backing track (along with Holly Johnson, Bowie and others), so theoretically he has 8 Xmas number ones.

Piran

Paul McCartney can definitely keep the record then! 😅

Well it's in the past now until people start losing interest in their YouTube channel and they know they can boost again next year.

Looking forward to new music next year and hoping Lost Frequencies 'back to you' can chart been loving that last couple of weeks

I’d certainly be glad to see Lost Frequencies get another hit in 2023!

When the Beatles issued ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand’ there were pre-sales over a million in the UK. You couldn’t buy them sitting somewhere on a device and people queued around the block at record shops to get their hands on a 7 inch disc to take home - and they sold 12 million of that one record in the USA.
Charts meant a lot more back then.
