The Top 40 biggest songs of 2017 on the Official Chart
Featuring eleven Number 1s, including Dua Lipa, Calvin Harris and Clean Bandit.
Ed Sheeran completes a hugely successful year by claiming the UK’s biggest single of 2017 with Shape Of You, OfficialCharts.com can reveal.
The track, which was released in January as the lead single from his third album ÷, has shifted 3.2 million combined sales to be the year’s best-selling and most streamed track, split between 787,000 sales and a whopping 248 million streams.
Ed’s music has dominated the Official Chart throughout 2017 and all four of ÷’s singles - Castle On The Hill (Number 3, released the same week as Shape Of You), Galway Girl (5) and Perfect (6), which claimed this year’s Official Christmas Number 1 - all finish inside the year-end Top 10.
Shape Of You spent a mammoth 14 weeks at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart between January and April and to date has logged 51 weeks inside the Top 100. The song is also the most streamed of all-time in the UK, overtaking Drake's One Dance.

The news comes as the record labels' association, The BPI, have revealed that streaming now accounts for over half of music consumption in the UK (50.4%). In December 2017 a landmark 1.5 billion audio streams were recorded in a single week.
Platforms such as Spotify, Deezer and Apple Music have helped fuel the music industry's fastest growth since 1998, equating to everyone in the country playing 1,036 tracks (that's nearly three continuous days of music) in 2017.

Meanwhile, Spanglish summer hit Despacito by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber finishes as the UK’s second biggest single with 2.3 million combined sales. The song became a global smash after Justin was added to a remix of the song, logging 11 weeks at Number 1 between May and August.
Another huge summer smash, French Montana’s Unforgettable ft. Swae Lee, finishes at Number 4 on the biggest singles of 2017 with 1.4 million combines sales. The track peaked at Number 2 in August and spent 30 weeks in the Top 40.
British trio Clean Bandit make two entries in the Top 40: their chart-topping single Symphony ft. Zara Larsson places at Number 7 (1.3 million) and Rockabye is at 23. Rag’n’Bone Man’s breakout hit Human also earns a spot in the Top 10 at Number 8 (1.1 million), while British DJ/producer Jax Jones finishes at 10 with You Don't Know Me ft. Raye.
A total of eleven Number 1 singles appear in 2017’s year-end Top 40, including Dua Lipa’s New Rules at Number 11, DJ Khaled’s I’m The One at 12 and Wild Thoughts at 13, and Calvin Harris’ Feels ft. Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Big Sean at 25.
Several breakout singles by rising stars also feature, including J Hus’ Did You See at 21, Call On Me by Australian singer-songwriter Starley at 27, Maggie Lindemann’s Pretty Girl at 28 and Anne-Marie’s Ciao Adios at 40.

This year-end chart is so confusing for a multide of reasons:
1. Going by Shape of You's numbers, this year-end is still using the 100:1 streams-to-sales formula. Why?! The main weekly formula is 150:1, and the accelerated formula (a.k.a. the one they should *all* be using going by financials) is 300:1, meaning the numbers don't match either what it would've been with *or* without the midyear change.
2. Is this only counting songs' weeks when they were in the top 100? The ACR and the different formula altogether mean that songs that would've been in the top 100 in the year end's formula wouldn't have actually made the weeklies in plenty of instances and vice-versa.
3. Don't forget the eligibility regarding multi-artist entries. If that rule had been in place at the beginning, stuff like Supermarket Flowers and Barcelona wouldn't have made it at all, and I wonder if it adversely affected runs of songs like Galway Girl and Castle on the Hill (which played tug-of-war as Ed's third representative on the weeklies), which might've or might've not affected the year-end depending on the answer to #2.
Basically, this whole year has been one giant tornado of weirdness and I really hope there's at least a vestige of consistency in next year's content.

Interesting how Katy Perry and Harry Styles are rocking the sales Top 20 but failing to reach the Top 40 combined... 🤔

There isnt any song i like in top 40

Biggest surprises? That Havana isn't in the top 5! And where the is Pink's 'What About Us' ??? 8 weeks in the top 10 reaching high of #3. As good as plenty in this top 40 in terms of chart run!
I Am A Stegosaurus
I do like Ed but I'm losing respect for him on the grounds of him releasing millions of versions of the same song for more chart success. He did it for Shape of You, he's done it for Perfect and it's frankly cheating. Glad Shape of You beat Despacito though

I'd definitely take 2017 over 2016 in terms of hit music.
I liked all four of Ed Sheeran's song in the Top 10 of the Chart Of The Year, even if I did get tired of his chart dominance at times over the past few months.
I especially love seeing: 'Symphony', 'Something Just Like This', 'New Rules', 'Mama' & 'Havana' so high up!
I'm still disappointed that 'That's What I Like' didn't make the Top 10 of the weekly charts, but at least it had good longevity.
I look forward to seeing what the charts bring us this coming year! :)

A song that reached number 12 ranks higher than a song that reached number 1

Assuming you're asking why... Because That's What I Like didn't sell enough copies to give it a weekly position higher that number 12 - that week, 11 other tracks sold more. However over the calendar year, it sold more copies than Too Good At Goodbyes giving it a higher position listed above. Even though Sam Smith sold more copies than any other single in it's peak week (s).
Hope that helps?
I Am A Stegosaurus
And a song that went straight in at #1 isn't in the top 40 at ALL. Oh well, in your case, Bruno Mars is better than Sam Smith anyway
Charlie Risdale
And That’s What I Like had 3 or 4 months more sales than Too Good At Goodbyes

Wow! It's mostly the same crappy music in the United Kingdom as it is in here in the States. Something needs to happen soon. I am tired of my ears being assaulted.
