The Top 20 biggest selling albums of 2011 revealed!
The BPI have released the Official Charts Company's sales data revealing the top selling albums of 2011.
The BPI have released the Official Charts Company's sales data revealing the top selling albums of 2011.
Last year was a bumper year for British music with Adele’s ‘21’ being the biggest selling album of 2011 by far ending the year with nearly 3.8m copies sold – more than double the 1.8m sales achieved by 2010’s top album, Take That’s ‘Progress’. ‘21’ became the highest-selling album of the 21st Century in December jus 10 months after its initial release, achieving more sales in a single calendar year than any other album in British chart history.
2011 ended with Adele’s debut album, ‘19’, in fourth place, alongside Top 10 placings for Coldplay’s ‘Mylo Xyloto’ (5), Jessie J’s ‘Who You Are’ (8) and Ed Sheeran’s ‘+’ (9).
“Led by Adele, Jessie J, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and others, records by British artists in 2011 achieved both critical and commercial success both at home and around the world,” said BPI chairman Tony Wadsworth. “But the challenge of sustaining this performance against a backdrop of chronic piracy means that Government action remains absolutely crucial for British artists and their labels.”
Amy Winehouse’s posthumous third album, ‘Lioness: Hiddent Treasures’ finished just outside the Top 10 at Number 11 with over 638,000 copies sold, while former X Factor contestant and Xtra Factor host Olly Murs’ second album, ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’ is at 12 having sold over 597,000.
