Sam Smith celebrates four UK Number 1s backstage at sold out Brixton Academy show
As he enjoys his four Official Number 1 Awards, we look back at Sam's chart history
It’s been an incredible two years for Sam Smith.
From scoring his first UK chart-topper with Naughty Boy collaboration La La La back in 2013, to being named the 2014 BRITs Critics Choice winner, to winning four GRAMMY Awards in February this year – Sam is a force to be reckoned with.
As the doors open at London’s Brixton Academy tonight where Sam kicks off the first of a sell-out three-night stint to conclude his UK tour, Sam is snapped backstage with his four Number 1 Awards from the Official Charts Company to celebrate his string of UK chart-toppers.
Sam first hit Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart back in May 2013 featuring on Naughty Boy’s La La La. The track has now sold over 1 million copies in the UK, becoming one of only 158 tracks in the Official Chart’s 62-year history to pass the milestone.
Money On My Mind then became Sam’s first solo chart-topper in March 2014, before Stay With Me followed suit in May.
More recently, Sam re-recorded his debut solo single Lay Me Down alongside John Legend for Comic Relief. The track, which currently reigns the Official Singles Chart, has sold 166k copies in the last two weeks.
As well as shifting a cool 4 million singles here in the UK in less than two years, Sam’s debut album In The Lonely Hour was the only LP last year to smash 1 million sales on both British and US soil. The record-breaking debut has gone on to sell a tidy 1.6 million copies here in the UK, and hasn’t left the Official Albums Chart Top 10 since its release, some 43 weeks ago.
Congratulations Sam!
