One Direction sell 12 million singles, albums and DVD and Blu-rays worldwide

In less than a year, One Direction have sold a staggering 12 million singles, albums and DVDs and Blu-rays worldwide.

Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, who came third in the 2010 series of The X Factor, went straight to Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart with their debut release, What Makes You Beautiful, in September 2011. Their debut album, Up All Night, which followed in December of that year, peaked at Number 2 in the Official Albums Chart, while their debut DVD and Blu-ray release, Up All Night – The Live Tour, reached Number 6 in the Official Video Chart.

Their 12 million world-wide sales breaks down as eight million singles, three million albums and one million DVD and Blu-rays. According to the latest Official Charts Company sales figures, of that total 1.17 million One Direction singles, 660,000 copies of their album Up All Night and 61,000 copies of Up All Night – The Live Tour DVDs and Blu-rays were sold here in the UK.

What makes You Beautiful is by One Direction's biggest selling track in the UK, shifting nearly 700,000 copies since its release, while One Thing, which was released in January, is in second place with sales of over 154,000 copies.
