A year ago today (January 10), the music world was in mourning following the announcement of the death of rock legend David Bowie.

From his humble beginnings as David Jones in Brixton, south London, to worldwide megastardom, David Bowie was never far from the charts. And the 12 months following his passing has seen a number of his classic tracks and albums as well as new reissues dominate the Official Charts.

Over the past year, a combined total of 1.62 million albums and 1.87 million singles by David Bowie have been sold. To mark one year since music icon's death, Official Charts reveals his most popular tracks and albums over the last 12 months since his passing.

Heroes

Despite originally missing the Top 20 upon original release in 1977, Heroes has found new fans in the digital age. In the days after his death, the song reached a new peak on the Official Singles Chart at Number 12.

Bowie's uplifting anthem was covered by 2010's X Factor finalists – including One Direction – for a charity single, taking it to Number 1, and was adopted as theme song by Team GB during their 2012 London Olympics campaign. Since his death, Heroes has been streamed 8.83 million times and notched up almost 50,000 downloads.

Life On Mars

Originally featuring on 1971 album Hunky Dory, it wasn't until Bowie found success with his Ziggy Stardust album that Life On Mars got some recognition. It finally became a single in 1973 and reached Number 3.

Life On Mars found new fans when it was featured in a BBC drama of the same name in 2006. After his death, the song re-entered the Official Singles Chart at Number 16 and has been streamed 8.1 million times and downloaded 42,000 times in the last year.

Starman

Bowie's Starman was a Top 10 smash when it was first released in 1972 - his first hit since 1969's Space Oddity. It went on to become one of his signature songs and returned the Official Singles Chart at Number 18 after his death. Since then the track has notched up 6.86 million streams and 44,000 downloads.

Albums

As well as his singles, Bowie's albums flooded back into the Official Chart after his death, with a number of his classic works re-entering the Top 40 alongside new retrospectives - notching up over half a million sales in the week after his passing alone.

David Bowie is the Starman of the Official Chart as he scores his tenth Number 1 album with Blackstar and 18 more of his albums enter the Top 100 following the news of his death. Full story here.

Behind Blackstar are three compilations; 2002's Best Of Bowie (which reached Number 1 soon after Blackstar), 2014's Nothing Has Changed and latest release Legacy, while his second biggest studio album of the past year is 1972's Hunky Dory.
