SPICE GIRLS

In the Nineties, Spicemania circled the globe thanks to Sporty (Mel Chisolm), Baby (Emma Bunton), Posh (Victoria Adams/Beckham), Ginger (Geri Halliwell) and Scary (Mel Brown). In their relatively short career as a group, the Spice Girls notched up a staggering nine Number 1 singles - the highest tally of any girl group ever.

The Spice Girls' first single was 1996's iconic Wannabe, which established the group as a global phenomenon. The Spice Girls went on to score the UK's coveted Christmas Number 1 single three years in a row starting with 2 Become 1 in 1996, followed by Too Much (1997) and their third and final Christmas Number 1, Goodbye, in 1998. The only other acts to pull off a hat-trick of festive chart toppers are The Beatles and LadBaby.

Afraid so (knocked off by Barbie Girl). There was a lot of negativity around The Spice Girls at that time and Spice Up Your Life received negative reviews which is crazy in hindsight.

To start with that they were overexposed and that they have never performed live and that they were literally everywhere..

I remember that time with great sadness because for example in Spain they went from selling more than 1 million copies of "Spice" (1.300.000 exactly) to being booed at the 1998 awards gala where they presented spice up your life for the first time in Spain, They made the world premiere of the album in Granada (spain), I suppose because we were the third largest market behind the USA and UK.
I had to hide that I was still a fan of spice girls to avoid bullying at my school.
Spiceworld finally was #2 for 5 weeks and got 3 platinum records for more than 300.000 copies.
