CHER

Cher's hit songs and albums

Cher first emerged as one half of husband and wife duo Sonny & Cher before breaking through with her solo career. Born Cherilyn Sarkisian on 20 May 1946, Cher is one of the most iconic and recognisable pop stars of all time.

While Cher's UK chart debut originally came in the form of Sonny & Cher’s chart-topping duet I Got You Babe in 1965, her debut solo single All I Really Want To Do broke the UK Top 40 the same month, and Cher has gone on to chart a solo single of new material in the Top 40 in every decade since.

Across her career, Cher has notched up four UK Number 1 singles; I Got You Babe was Cher's first UK Number 1 hit, followed by The Shoop Shop Song (It's In His Kiss) from the 1990 film Mermaids starring Cher, Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, plus further Number 1s with 1995's Love Can Build A Bridge, and her classic million-selling comeback Believe in 1998.

As well as a string of chart-topping singles, Cher also topped the Official Albums Chart on more than one occasion, scoring two Number 1 albums with Love Hurts and her hits collection Greatest Hits 1965-1992

In December 2023 at 77 years, 7 months old, Cher became the oldest solo female performer ever to secure a Top 40 on the Official Singles Chart with DJ Play a Christmas Song, and the first solo artist ever to achieve a Top 40 hit with new material on the Official Singles Chart in each of seven consecutive decades.

'Dead Ringer For Love' - a duet between Meat Loaf and Cher - should be added to Cher's tally! It was uncredited at the time, but that has changed and now she is credited on all streaming and buying music platforms (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Apple Music, etc). Cher is a full-on duet partner in the song and full-on acting/singing partner in the official music video, this should be rectified once and for all!

Hello OCC, could you please correct your mangling of Cher's name ("Cherilyn Sakisan LaPierre") in the opening sentence? It's an Armenian surname, Sarkisian. 'Sakisan' makes her sound like a brand of cat litter.

I think Stop Crying Your Heart Out should be included on this list
