Roísín Murphy is a singer, songwriter, and an endlessly innovating creative force in dance music.
Growing up in the Irish town of Arklow, music called Murphy from an early age, discovering the power of her voice at the age of 10 through a performance of West End classic Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina at a local poetry festival.
Her family decamped to Manchester when she was just a teen and Murphy dove headlong into the music scene thereafter. When her parents divorced and moved back to Ireland when she was 15, she decided to stay behind in England and live alone, to continue her artistic immersion.
After a brief flirtation with noise and punk in Manchester’s confines, Roísín hitched over to Sheffield at 19 to immerse herself in the club scene. A chance meeting with local bassist Mark Brydon led the pair to form the group Moloko, who scored Top 5 hits in 1999 with dance classic Sing It Back and 2000's The Time Is Now.
A year later in 2001, Roisin collaborated with German producer Boris Dlugosch on Top 20 hit Never Enough, giving Roisin her first solo-credited appearance on the Official Singles Chart at Number 16. More chart appearances followed a few years later with singles Let Me Know (Number 28) and You Know Me Better (Number 47) from Murphy's 2007 album Overpowered.
Roisin Murphy’s decorated solo career has spanned several lauded albums (with a Mercury Music Prize nomination for 2015’s Hairless Toys), EP and single collaborations, along with video directing and acting accolades. Roisin's highest-charting album arrived in 2023 courtesy of Hit Parade, while her experimental live shows and aesthetic remain gloriously eccentric and captivating.
