I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU
by WHITNEY HOUSTON
I Will Always Love You was originally written in 1973 by country superstar Dolly Parton (the same day she knocked up Jolene, fact fans – now THAT’S productivity), and covered by American singer and actress Whitney Houston for the soundtrack of her 1992 film The Bodyguard.
It wasn’t the first choice, as she’d planned on covering Jimmy Ruffin’s What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted until it was pointed out that it had already been used in a recent film, and so co-star Kevin Costner suggested I Will Always Love You instead. Quite a suggestion, it turned out.
First released November 3, 1992, I Will Always Love You entered the UK Official Singles Chart at Number 12, and raced to the top three weeks later to spend a record-breaking ten weeks there, becoming Whitney’s fourth Number 1 (after Saving All My Love For You, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and One Moment In Time) and 1992’s best-selling single, as well as the UK Official Christmas Number 1 1992.
