CHRISTMAS DRILLINGS
by SIDEMEN
Sidemen came a whisker away from potential Christmas Number 1 victory in December 2022 with charity single Christmas Drillings.
Christmas Drillings, a track by YouTube collective Sidemen, was originally one of two singles released 5 October as part of the Sidemen Sunday videos where two teams were selected, with one team (the "good" team) given a budget of £100,000, and the "bad" team given just £10. The good team wrote and recorded a Christmas song Christmas Drillings about the roadman way of life during festive season, produced by Nyge using a drill beat. Their opponents wrote a tune called This Or That. Whichever group garnered the most video views and streams would be declared the winner and all proceeds would be donated to charity network FareShare, which aims to reduce food poverty and UK food waste.
Following its release, Christmas Drillings which features Sidemen members KSI, Vik and Tobi alongside MC JME went on to climb The Official Chart and not before long Sidemen found themselves hitting the campaign trail during Christmas Number 1 week too, complete with a fully decked out Christmas Drillings double decker bus that brought Central London to a standstill.
In a thrilling festive chart battle that went down to the wire, Sidemen managed to close the gap on midweek leaders LadBaby, rising from Number 41 the previous week, to smash all the way into the Top 10 with 24 hours of the race left to go.
Speaking exclusively to Official Charts about how they would celebrate if they managed to land the Christmas Number 1, Vik from Sidemen commented:
“I will have a day off! I will kick my feet up and relax because this whole week has been one crazy rollercoaster. We didn’t expect to be in the Official Top 40, let alone going for the Number 1 spot. Thank you all so much for streaming, buying the song, supporting a great cause and supporting us.”
While Sidemen’s Tobi says: “I’ve just said that if we get Christmas Number 1, I’m gonna let JJ shave off all my hair. I’m terrified, man! I’ve never been bald in my life. I’m shook.”
A nail-biting finish saw Christmas Drillings land at Number 3 in the biggest chart race of the year, just pipped by WHAM!'s Last Christmas in second place, while LadBaby clinched the 2022 Christmas Number 1 with Food Aid.
