SAVE YOUR LOVE
by RENEE & RENATO
Renée and Renato were a female/male vocal duo, made up of West Midlands-resident Italian-born Renato Pagliari – who was rumoured to be the voice behind the iconic advert Just One Cornetto – and Renée (aka English singer Hilary Lester). Save Your Love was written by songwriter Johnny Edward (with his wife Sue) who’d first clocked Renato on the TV talent show New Faces in 1975 with a view to recording the song.
First released in October 1982, Save Your Love gently crawled up the chart entering the Top 40 on November 13, 1982 at Number 38 picking up business leading up to Christmas, and knocking The Jam’s Beat Surrender off the top a week before the Christmas chart was announced. Save Your Love spent four weeks as UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1 selling over 980,000 copies. With no major backing, distribution or promotion, it also became the first independent record to top the UK Official Singles Chart.
