Naughty Boy and Sam Smith's La La La, released 18 May 2013 via Virgin Records, toppled Daft Punk's Get Lucky to debut on the Official Singles Chart at Number 1.
The track was chosen as the second single from Naughty Boy's debut album Hotel Cabana, it also appeared on the deluxe version of Sam Smith's album In The Lonely Hour.
La La La gave both producer Naughty Boy and then-rising singer Sam Smith their first UK Number 1 singles, and one of the fastest-selling singles of the year, shifting a massive 145,000 copies in its opening week. A little over a year later in June 2014, Official Charts announced that La La La had become a million-selling single. A rare chart achievement too, La La La was only the 148th track ever to cross the million sales threshold in the UK. No surprise then that it became one of the biggest singles of 2013, ending the year in fifth place overall.
"As a musician or artist to be remembered in the history of UK music is nothing but an honour and privilege," Naughty Boy told Official Charts at the time. "I would like to thank Sam Smith and everyone involved in making this record a success."
Sam Smith added “The fact that La La La has sold so many copies and broken so many boundaries is unbelievable. I was actually really worried about releasing that track because I didn’t want to be known as a featured artist. I couldn’t have been more wrong!“
La La La was written by Shahid "Naughty Boy" Khan, Al-Hakam El-Kaubaisy, Frobisher Mbabazi, Sam Smith, Jimmy Napes, James Murray, Mustafa Omer and Jonny Coffer, the song was produced by Naughty Boy along with Komi and Mojam.
In 2025 La La La returned to the Top 40 for the first time in nearly 12 years, thanks to a viral social media trend.
