Earth Song was American singer Michael Jackson’s sixth UK Number 1 since he made his solo chart debut in 1972 with Got To Be There. Written by Jackson and co-produced by him with David Foster and Bill Bottrell it also featured Andraé Crouch's Choir. Earth Song had a long gestation, having first been composed in 1988 during his Bad tour, with the title What About Us, initially recorded in 1989 and then finished in May 1995 and featured on his HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I album, as part of the HIStory Continues disc which featured 15 new songs alongside a first disc of greatest hits.
Entering the UK Official Singles Chart at Number 1 at the start of December, it remained there for six weeks until mid-January making it 1995’s UK Christmas Number 1, Jackson's first.
