Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon is the lead single from the Tennessee rockers’ fourth studio album Only By The Night.
Released in September 2008, and written by band members Caleb, Jared, Matthew and Nathan Followill, Sex On Fire was a surprise smash hit that elevated Kings Of Leon to new heights on the Official Chart.
The band’s previous three records had reached the Official Albums Chart Top 5 (including 2007's chart-topping Because Of The Times), but Sex On Fire became Kings Of Leon's first ever Number 1 single, toppling Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl to land straight in at the top of the Official Singles Chart on 14 September 2008 after selling just shy of 45,000 copies in its opening week. Sex On Fire spent three weeks at Number 1 across September and October 2008.
As well as Sex On Fire being the Kings Of Leon’s biggest UK hit, it is also one of the Official Top 100 best-selling songs of all time in the UK too, having sold well in excess of 1 million copies according to Official Charts Company data. In November 2022, as part of the Official Singles Chart’s 70th anniversary celebrations, Official Charts announced Sex On Fire as the 54th best-selling single in chart history, outselling even the Spice Girls’ iconic debut single Wannabe!
Another worldwide smash, Use Somebody, followed shortly after Sex On Fire, and Kings Of Leon’s future was secured.
