EYES CLOSED
by ED SHEERAN

Eyes Closed was the lead single from the Ed's stripped-back fifth studio album – (Subtract) and is one of the singer’s most deeply personal moments. Despite the rest of the record being co-written and produced by The National's Aaron Dessner, Eyes Closed came with help from Ed's frequent collaborators, Swedish super-producer Max Martin, Shellback and rising dance star Fred again...

Originally written in 2018 as a standard break-up song, Ed's 2022 sessions with Dessner meant the track was reworked as a tribute to the pain and grief of losing a friend, in Ed's case the entrepreneur Jamal Edwards who passed away in 2022.

Eyes Closed saw Sheeran clock up his 41st Top Ten entry, becoming fifth overall with the most entries behind Elvis (76), Cliff Richard (68), Madonna (63) and Michael Jackson (44). Eyes Closed was Ed Sheeran's 14th Number 1 single, drawing level with Cliff Richard and Westlife in the list of artists with the most UK Number 1 singles in Official Chart history. Only Elvis (21) and The Beatles (17) lay ahead of him.
