STAY ANOTHER DAY
by EAST 17
East 17 are an English boy band who formed in 1991 originally comprised of Tony Mortimer, Brian Harvey, John Hendy and Terry Coldwell. Released November 21, 1994, Stay Another Day was the quartet’s tenth single and their first UK Official Singles Chart Number 1 entering the chart at Number 7 before leaping to the top for five weeks to claim 1994’s UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1 despite facing stiff competition from Mariah Carey’s future canon classic, All I Want for Christmas Is You.
Co-written by Tony Mortimer (with Rob Kean and Dominic Hawken) about the suicide of his brother Ollie, it was produced by Phil Harding and Ian Curnow and was the third song issued from their second album Steam. Originally not destined for release as a Christmas single, bells were added to end of the song for it to appeal and the boys filmed two videos – one in a recording studio, and another snowy affair with them in parkas – for it to extend past the festive season for a 15-week chart life.
