First released on July 14, 1958, It’s Only Make Believe was originally the B-side to Arkansas-born singer Conway Twitty’s US single I’ll Try, and became Twitty’s UK chart debut in November 1958 when it was flipped in favour of It’s Only Make Believe. It was the first UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1 to be self-penned, co-written by Twitty and his drummer Jack Nance, and hit the top during Christmas week spending five weeks in the position. It’s Only Make Believe went on to chart in over 22 countries selling eight million copies worldwide. Known as Harold Lloyd Jenkins until changing his name in 1957, Twitty would go on to have another four UK Official Singles Chart entries
