SAVIOUR'S DAY
by CLIFF RICHARD
Written by songwriter Chris Eaton – who originally penned Cliff’s 1982 festive offer Little Town – Saviour’s Day arrival at Number 1 gave the veteran singer and actor Cliff Richard a host of extraordinary statistics. It was his 13th Number 1 single, his 100th Top 40 hit and also saw him become the only act in Official Chart history to score a chart-topper in five consecutive decades. That Saviour’s Day was also his third UK Official Singles Chart Christmas Number 1 (after 1960’s I Love You and 1988’s Mistletoe and Wine) is almost an afterthought.
Although you could argue it was his fourth (and third consecutive) if you count his appearance on the 1989 Do They Know It’s Christmas remake by Band Aid II. Saviour’s Day was released November 26, 1990 entering the chart at Number 6 a week later, and a fortnight later on December 23, 1990, the song reached the top for a solitary week selling over 200,000 copies, only to be knocked off a week later by Iron Maiden’s much less festive Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter.
