GOOD LUCK BABE
by CHAPPELL ROAN
"You could kiss a hundred boys in bars," goes the chorus of Chappell Roan's long-awaited breakout single, Good Luck, Babe!, first released April 5 2024 via Amusement/Island Records, "shoot another shot try to stop the feeling."
A sapphic lament about the dangers of dating someone whose not at ease with their sexuality, Good Luck Babe! is one part early-career Marina & The Diamonds, one part Kate Bush and one part medieval renaissance fair.
Good Luck, Babe! was written by Chappell Roan, alongside the song's producer, Dan Nigro (Olivia Rodrigo, Sky Ferreira), and hitmaker to the stars Justin Tranter (Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez), the song quickly gained traction online and became Chappell's first career entry into the Top 40 of the UK's Official Singles Chart on April 25 2024.
“I needed to write a song about a common situationship within queer relationships — where someone is struggling with coming to terms with themselves." Chappell says of the song's creation. "It’s a song about wishing well to someone who is avoidant of their true feelings."
Over the perky synth-line and Chappell's impassioned pleas, no lyric seems to sum up the situation better than - "you'd have to stop the world, just to stop the feeling."
On Friday 28 June 2024, in its twelfth week on chart, Good Luck, Babe! entered the Top 10 for the first time at Number 7, just a week later on 5 July Chappell Roan scored her first Top 5 hit as the song climbed a further three places to Number 4. Official Charts confirmed it was also the best-selling single of the week on vinyl, landing at Number 1 on the Official Vinyl Singles Chart.
A little over a month later and Good Luck Babe was suddenly challenging for the Number 1 spot, landing in a close second place at Number 2 on 2 August, blocked by Sabrina Carpenter's Please Please Please.
