3 LIONS
by BADDIEL/SKINNER/LIGHTNING SEED
Three Lions (It's Coming Home) is the result of a successful team up in the 1990s of British comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner with Liverpool indie band The Lightning Seeds.
In joining forces, they created a Number 1 hit - an Official Chart record breaker, no less - and a classic football anthem for our times.
Originally released on 20 May 1996 to coincide with England hosting Euro '96, the music for Three Lions was written by Lightning Seeds' frontman Ian Broudie, with the lyrics penned by Baddiel and Skinner who, at the time, presented the popular TV show Fantasy Football League. The track entered straight in at Number 1.
A rework for the 1998 World Cup saw the anthem top the Official Singles Chart once again, and Three Lions today continues to experience a massive surge in popularity whenever England decide to do well at football again. Football fans revel in its signature chant “It’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming, football’s coming home!”
In 2018, as England crashed into the Semi-Finals of the World Cup, Three Lions reached Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart for the fourth time, a whole 22 years after its first outing at the summit. This helped the trio of Baddiel, Skinner and Lightning Seeds to break a UK Official Chart record; the first time a song has held four stints at Number 1 with the same artist line-up; the original 1996 version had two one-week stints in 1996, while the 1998 re-work had one three-week spell at the top.
With England currently through to the Euros 2024 Final, could Three Lions be about to come home for a fifth time? Only time will tell.
