BARBIE GIRL
by AQUA
Aqua's Barbie Girl was released in April 1997 by Universal and MCA as the third single from the Danish-Norwegian group's debut studio album, Aquarium (1997).
The song was written by band members Søren Rasted who saw a Danish exhibition on kitsch culture that featured Barbie dolls, along with co-writers Claus Norreen, René Dif, and Lene Nystrøm. Barbie Girl was produced by the former two alongside Johnny Jam and Delgado, while its accompanying music video was directed by Danish directors Peder Pedersen and Peter Stenbæk.
Barbie Girl was a huge worldwide commercial hit, in its opening week in the UK it entered the Official Singles Chart at Number 2, just kept off the top spot by Spice Girls' Spice Up Your Life. It rose to Number 1 the following week where it spent four weeks at the summit and went on to become a million seller.
Aqua's monster smash Barbie Girl was the second best-selling single of 1997 behind Elton John's Princess Diana tribute Candle In The Wind '97. Barbie Girl sold a staggering 1.59 million copies in its year of release alone according to Official Charts Company data, and is confirmed by Official Charts as one of the Top 20 best-selling songs of all time in the UK.
