Craig David - Born To Do It

Chart sales as of 2020: 1.94 millionCraig David was undoubtedly the breakout star of 2000. His debut album spent two weeks at Number 1 and was the sixth best-seller of the year. Hits on the album were Fill Me In (1), 7 Days (1), Walking Away (3) and Rendezvous (8).
Santana - Supernatural

Chart sales as of 2020: 984,000Spurred on by the explosion of latin-pop in the late-90s, latin-rock legends Santana reached new heights with their 18th (!) album, which first charted at the lower end of the Top 40 in 1999 before hitting Number 1 in April 2000. Hits on the record were Smooth (3) and Maria Maria (6).
Spice Girls - Forever

Chart sales as of 2020: 271,000Kudos to Spice Girls for ploughing on without Geri, but let's be honest, by the time of the release of Forever in November, it felt like the group's time had passed. Which is a shame, because Forever is a decent album (hello Right Back At Ya), if not particuarly Spice-y.
It explains why the album missed Number 1, losing out to Westlife, and its dissapointing sales. Hits on the album were Goodbye (1) and Holler/Let Love Lead The Way (1).
Toni Braxton - The Heat

Chart sales as of 2020: 175,000By 2000, Toni Braxton was on a roll: after two successful records, her third album The Heat became her highest charting in the UK and delivered a massive hit by way of He Wasn't Man Enough (5).
U2 - All That You Can't Leave Behind

Chart sales as of 2020: 1.17 millionU2's tenth album marked a return to their more mainstream sound, and the result saw them top the charts across the world and win seven Grammys. Hits on the album were Beautiful Day (1), Stuck In A Moment That You Can't Get Out Of (2), Elevation (3) and Walk On (5).
Whitney Houston - The Greatest Hits

Chart sales as of 2020: 1.77 millionOkay, we're cheating a bit by including a greatest hits here, but Whitney's 2000 retrospective includes four excellent new songs, including George Michael duet If I Told You That (9) and Could I Have This Kiss Forever with Enrique Igelsias (7), plus a handful of new remixes that are still played out today. The collection spent two weeks at Number 1, and the artwork is one of the best ever for a grestest hits, right?
All Saints - Saints & Sinners

Chart sales as of 2020: 610,000Mel, Shaznay, Nicole and Natalie went one better than their self-titled debut, topping the charts with the follow-up in October 2000. Reviews were mixed, but it features some of their best work: Black Coffee (1), Pure Shores (1) and All Hooked Up (7).
Ronan Keating - Ronan

Chart sales as of 2020: 1.35 millionAfter a huge run of hits with Boyzone, Ronan Keating's imaginatively-titled debut solo album was, predictably huge. He didn't just rely on Boyzone's success, however. The record's singles are undeniable staples of the early 2000s: When You Say Nothing At All (1), Life Is A Rollercoaster (1), The Way You Make Me Feel (6) and Lovin' Each Day (2).
Pink - Can't Take Me Home

Chart sales as of 2020: 473,000Before Pink became the queen of zero-f**ks-given rock-pop bangers, she had a go at sassy R&B on her debut, released in May 2000. But while it may have embodied the same energy as the albums that would follow, it wasn't a massive chart success, peaking at Number 13, despite decent sales and three Top 10 singles: There You Go (6), Most Girls (5) and You Make Me Sick (9).
Madonna - Music

Chart sales as of 2020: 1.64 millionMadonna reinvented herself as a cowgirl ror her eighth album, adding a lick of pop genius to a mix of country-meets-experimental dance. It spent two weeks at Number 1 and produced three hits: Music (1), Don't Tell Me (1) and What It Feels Like For A Girl (7).
Steps - Buzz

Chart sales as of 2020: 711,000Steps's third album is one of the best examples of that faux-futuristic aesthetic peddled by pop acts at the dawn of a new Millennium (Lisa's cutting edge hairstyle aside). Of course, the music contained within was quintessentially Steps: singles were Summer Of Love (5), Stomp (1), The Way You Make Me Feel (2) and Here and Now (4).
Robbie Williams - Sing When You're Winning

Chart sales as of 2020: 2.2 millionFor his third album, Robbie moved away from Oasis-styled Britpop sound and embraced pop, inspired by the likes of Elton John, The Who and Madchester. Lead single Rock DJ debuted at Number 1, while Kids (2), Supreme (4), Let Love Be Energy (10) and Eternity/The Road To Mandalay (1) were also huge hits.
The album finished as the second best-seller of the year, behind The Beatles' retrospective 1.
Britney Spears - Oops! I Did It Again

Chart sales as of 2020: 917,000By her second album, Britney Spears was one of the biggest popstars on the planet. Oops! is wall-to-wall hooks, big pop choruses and rock 'n' roll teen queen. Singles from the album were the title track (1), Lucky (5), Stronger (7) and Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know (12).
Coldplay - Parachutes

Chart sales as of 2020: 2.73 millionWithout the reputation Coldplay have earned over the last 20 years, it's worth noting their debut album was generally met with pleasant indifference. Still, their charming if innocuous first record was a Number 1 hit and finished as the year's eighth biggest album. Singles were Shiver (35), Yellow (4) and Trouble (10).
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

Chart sales as of 2020: 2.59 millionReleased a year after his breakout album, the comedy rap-driven Slim Shady LP, this follow-up saw Eminem take on a more introspective approach with his lyrics, incorporating hardcore hip hop and horrocore. The album features two UK Number 1s, The Real Slim Shady and Dido-assisted Stan.
Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast

Chart sales as of 2020: 460,000The British musician's debut album was met with widespread critical acclaim and went on to win the 2000 Mercury Prize. The cover art, designed by Andy Votel, is loosely based on Leonardo da Vinci's drawing Vitruvian Man. Hit singles were Disillusion (26), Once Around The Block (27) and Pissing In The Wind (22).
Enya - A Day Without Rain

Its lead single Only Time became a worldwide hit after it was played extensively across TV and radio in coverage of the 11 September 2001 attacks, reaching the Top 10 in American and 32 in the UK.
NSync - No Strings Attached

Chart sales as of 2020: 206,000The boyband's second album saw them gain footing worldwide. In America it sold 2.4 million copies in its first week - a record held for 15 years until surpassed them with 25. Its sales in the UK were a little more modest, but spinoff singles Bye Bye Bye (3) and It's Gonna Be Me (9) are now held up as textbook examples of turn-of-the-century US teen pop.
David Gray - White Ladder

Chart sales as of 2020: 3.05 millionThe surprise hit of 2000 went to David Gray, whose self-produced album, recorded in his London flat and released two years earlier, had finally found an audience and took over the charts. His own brand of melachonly folktronica was a hit with the aldult contemporary market, hanging around the Official Albums Chart for over a year before reaching Number 1 in 2001.
The album's hit singles were Babylon (5), Please Forgive Me (18), This Years Love (20), Sail Away (26) and Say Hello Wave Goodbye (26).
Limp Bizkit - Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water

Chart sales as of 2020: 889,000US nu-metal band Limp Bizkit struck gold in 2000 with their third album, which debuted at Number 2 in October but eventually climbed to Number 1 the following February. The album's breakout single was the chart-topping Rollin', but the record featured plenty of other hits: Take A Look Around (3), My Generation (15), My Way (6) and Boiler (18).
Moloko - Things To Make And Do

Chart sales as of 2020: 358,000Electronic dance duo Roisin Murphy and Mark Brydon landed their most successful record in 2000, following the success of Top 5 hit Sing It Back and Number 2 single The Time Is Now. The record also featured Pure Pleasure Seeker (21).
Radiohead - Kid A

Chart sales as of 2020: 479,000Radiohead's fourth album was a complete shift in the sound they had become known for, incorporating synthesisers, strings, jazz and electronic music. The band did few interviews around it and released no promotional singles or music videos. It topped the Official Albums Chart regardless, going Platinum in its first week.
