WEEKLY CHART REVIEW (09/10/2020 - 15/10/2020)

🔴 (Negative)

1) One feature about the chart that I’ve noticed is that the Top 5 has become particularly stagnant lately! Even though the songs are mostly decent minus ‘Wap’, seeing very little movement in this region in the past month because it’s so boring.

2) Thankfully, it didn’t climb very much at all, but I’m still so frustrated by the BTS remix to ‘Savage Love’! The original at least had a unique summery beat, but the falsettos are too grating in this new version to enjoy it.

3) I always say that Shawn Mendes songs are hit-or-miss for me… unfortunately, this is a big miss! I really can’t get behind how he tries to build up to an anthemic hook, which just falls so flat in terms of instrumentation. That’s also not helped by his clearly strained falsetto! Besides, he’s done this kind of thing before in ‘If I Can’t Have You’ & ‘There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back’ & to be honest, they were both way more powerful & in general, significantly better. I’d skip this one!

4) ‘Rain On Me’ dropped out! I knew this was coming, but as someone who still streams this multiple times a week, it’s disappointing to see, even so late into its chart run, haha.

5) ‘Greece’ is now on ACR! If you’re on the Discord server, you’ll know why I’m sad that this fell, haha.

6) 'Franchise' took a massive second week drop! Being Travis Scott, I was hoping his best song to date would have some longevity, so it to see this fail to catch on with the British public.

7) ‘Dream On Me’ is nowhere near the Top 40! I swear, so many of you are sleeping on that one. It’s a really fun disco-pop bop that honestly could’ve become a hit in the 80’s or 90’s! If we’re going to let it flop (which we really shouldn’t), please at least give it a listen. You’ll be so glad you did!

🟠 (Mixed)

1) On one hand, ‘Looking For Me’ looks like it’s finally peaked, but on the other hand, ‘Lemonade’ hits the Top 3! I’m so excited about the latter, but I thought the former could get a little further.

2) Pop Smoke now has two simultaneous Top 10 songs! Honestly, most of his new is growing on me, but it’s still ‘Mood Swings’ that I’m obsessed with right now.

3) ‘Take You Dancing’ is close to dropping out of the Top 10… so why does it only now start to come around on me? Just typical!

4) ‘UFO’ might honestly be DBE’s best song to date, out of the several chart entries they’ve already had! I think getting Aitch on board was definitely a useful call for this group in particular & Young Adz sounding almost like an alien here kind of links it well with the title. I’m not saying that this is the best urban music we have to offer by any means, but for an act I generally don’t like, I’m completely okay with this.

5) So Drake actually sounds good in ‘Outta Time’, but I don’t really know what Bryson Tiller adds to this! I’m also not a fan of the chipmunk-style vocals pushed to the back of the mix, but given what these two have made before, this is at least a step in the right direction.

6) I used to hate this pair (they’re not officially a group, but they always seem to collaborate with one another), although these new songs from Metro Boomin’ & 21 Savage do seem to be an improvement. 21 Savage might seem mostly uninteresting, but at least he’s bringing a bit more grit to the table & his voice seems like a better fit for Metro Boomin’ productions! Still, I don’t think this is going to stick around at all, but I’m not overly bothered about it being here.

7) As for ‘Put Your Records On’, I’m close to really liking this, due to the chilled production & a really sweet hook, but I don’t know how I feel about the falsetto yet & the song takes a little too long to get going for me! I certainly get why this song is doing well though, particularly on the radio.

8) I’m putting Miley’s cover of the Blondie classic here, because I feel that her voice is too raw to really suit this & the original just connects a bit better with me! Of course, her vocals remain absolutely incredible & you can tell that she’s a very passionate singer. I could see this having potential to grow on me though!

9) Queen are such an iconic group & I love a lot of their classics, so it’s cool to see them have the #1 album this week! Of course, Adam Lambert will never live up to the expectations of Freddie Mercury as a singer & performer, but hey, he’s still an incredibly competent & impressive frontman.

🟢 (Positive)

1) ‘Mood’ lands another impressive singles chart victory! I’ll admit, this might’ve soured on me slightly throughout the week, but it’s still among the best trap hits that this year has given us, so I’m not about to complain that it’s leading again!

2) A lot of people on Discord will disagree with me on this one, but ‘Wap’ is set to go on ACR next week! It will not be missed by me at all.

3) Yeah, somehow another Love Island star charts & makes an awesome song! There’s a ton of charisma from both artists here, but I also like the warm beat & that the bass is placed with just the right amount of intensity. Honestly, in a week where we had so many new entries & rap absolutely took over again, this one stands out! Nice work.

4) ‘Levitating’ is back again thanks to an amazing remix with DaBaby, which I might like even more than the original! Why did Radio 1 have to play the much inferior Blessed Madonna remix though?! I don’t even mind this replacing ‘Hallucinate’ among Dua Lipa songs, because the original is the best track on ‘Future Nostalgia’ in my opinion, haha.

5) ‘Come Over’ seems to be a very popular name for song titles lately & honestly, it’s amazing to see Jorja Smith make another appearance here. She’s always had a very smooth & convincing R&B voice, although I wish I liked Popcaan’s part more here! I mean, he’s a fine enough artist, but I just feel like there’s a bit too much autotune from him here & I question how much chemistry the two artists really have here. Oh well, that’s still not stopping me from really enjoying this!

6) I guess it’s third time lucky for BLACKPINK in 2020, as following two massive disappointments, ‘Lovesick Girls’ is a real return to form for the girls! Yeah, it’s blatantly cheesy, but it’s done in a fun way with some incredible harmonies & a killer hook. It reminds me of their earlier discography, which is definitely a promising sign moving forward!
