When you listen to the radio nahadays they play so much rubbish n then when I look at the charts on ere all them autotuners played day in day ahrt are in the charts. Thass why I prefer artists like Madge, Everythin but the Girl, EJ, FM, Metallica even least they don't old their noses n sing. Ere are I tried it the other day n if you old in one side of your nose you get a different sahnd to when you old both sides. Iss wot they call the new nasal whine cos they can't sing.

Finally a Taylor Swift re re re re re re edition that doesn't debut at number 1!!! I'd love that EBTG reach number 1

Genuine question - how tf can an album be at number 2 in April when the OC info' on it, on this website, says "first charted 3rd May 2023" ? (and surprise, surprise it's not listed as available ANYWHERE, not even for pre-order on Amazon) Yet another OC fantasy?
Blank
The official dates are 'Week Ending', so although it charted in April, the week of charting is called "Week Ending 3rd May". W/E is now 6 days after the announcement, and has been since at least the 1980s. Before 1980, there were various days of the week and chart collation methods that meant it was sometimes longer, sometimes shorter than 6 days between announcement and published "week ending" date. Today, there is also no requirement for a physical copy to exist. Albums can chart on streaming or downloads alone.

Paul Read
I'll happily concede the first part of your response David, but your final sentence is where the problem lies ... there has been nowhere to stream it or download it from!
Even the "listen" link provided by The OCC does NOT take you a track/tracks from this supposed album - which also gets no mention on the band's website either!
Blank
OCC isnt a streaming site. Streaming therefore probably won't work, and would come from dedicated streaming sites. Considering on other (and older) entries, OCC can't even get the right image or chart run, it's no surprise they can't get an audio clip right! It's available physically on Rough Trade and presumably in physical shops.
I've still not downloaded a record in my life, let alone stream (I still only do physical, and even then, very infrequently - less than one a month, sometimes only one a year!), so I'm not the best person to ask about digital services, but I doubt it wouldn't be on any.
In simple terms, those that are popular on streaming services, stay on chart for long times, those that are only popular within fanbases, tend to sell physically. Those that sell physically tend to drop like a stone!
On that basis, I suspect it is sold almost exclusively physically and will struggle to be in the top 75 in or before it's 3rd week. It has happened many times in the last 3 years.

The physical release on Rough Trade (which I finally found this morning) is a limited edition of around 6,000 copies of the CD and 2,000 on "tape", not apparently available anywhere else - and as the album consists only of tracks that were part of the Live Lounge session which has been available in video format for some time, I can see this being another one of the many 'bricks' that have appeared at the top of the chart based on anticipated sales (which IS still happening, despite assurances in the past that it wouldn't) and then vanished forever.
Blank
If that's the case of so few copies being sold, it shows why so many albums drop out straight from the top 10: they sell out in week one with no stock left for week 2! You can easily get into the top 10 with well under 10,000 sales. Makes it difficult for me to collect all the hits though.
Blank
It goes some way to explain why so many top 10 records drop straight out: they sell out in week one, leaving no stock left to sell in week 2! Even with such small numbers, as you can get into the top 10 with well under 10,000 sales.
thierry henon
Really hope to see AMELIA stuck around for a few more weeks in the chart...already dropping to number 98 after 8 weeks!! How come she is not having more success??!! she is as talented as Dua or other singer around!!
Zimowski
her material sounds cheap and generic imho - that's why
thierry henon
QUEEN RADIO might have never made the Top 60 but so glad that after over 6 months, the beautiful NICKI is still around!! Amazing feat!!

no I am not but you are creepy as garbaj

I didn't expect PINK to drop that fast with her amazing TRUSTFALL!! same fate in the USA!!
thierry henon
DRIVE by TIESTO only at number 34!! he is having so much success singles wise, surprised to see him at a disappointed 34...so unfair..he is so good!!
thierry henon
Can we do like the single chart: having 3 albums max inside the Top 100!!!! Having 8 TAYLOR albums inside the Top 100 is 7 too many!! that girl is so overrated and so boring!! all her songs sound the same!!
thierry henon
DERMOT already out of the chart after only 12 weeks on the chart!! So unfair!! his 2nd opus is as good as WITHOUT FEAR!!
thierry henon
Where is ELLIE GOULDING? that talented artist can't already be out of the Top 100 after reaching the number 1 spot 3 weeks ago??!!
thierry henon
Was hoping to see EBTG reaching the Top spot this week!! so disappointed...and they didn't even made the Top 2!! after 24 years absence, they so deserve to finally claim their first number 1 album!! FUSE is one of their best album!!

Absolutely

so hmv just announced a pre-order of a vinyl box set of madonna’s finally enough love, with multicoloured rainbow records… looks like that’ll make it re enter the albums chart in no time which will upset some of the crybabies here. let the carnage continue! 🍿
D
Devastashun.
I don't think they are crybabies they just don't like demonic behaviour from a dark place.

#1 on Amazon's pre-orders and sold out on HMV soon after being announced. and let's not forget this is a £150 vinyl. lol.

We must give a warm acknowledgement to KING Michael Jackson on the worldwide charts in 2023. Metallica briefly topped the charts, and is already fallen down in just its second week. Artists are having a hard time selling, but Michael remains steady and true. We can all rally around the undisputed king of pop because he is the number one selling artist in the world. Again, aging Madonna fanatics are now strangely silent since her low selling duds barely justify being released. In reality, Michael is still breaking records, 13 years since his untimely death. Celebrate a legend. Celebrate Michael Joseph Jackson!
🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜
you do realise it’s only holding up because it’s another useless greatest hits compilation, which continue to clog up the charts? unless i’m being stupid and thriller is also there.
speaking of which, oh look, post malone dropped another one that we won’t be able to get rid of. that’s why the compilations charts exist. really shouldn’t just be limited to now albums and soundtracks imo
Foxes
what we really need is ed sheeran to release a greatest hits album, he made occ change the rules on the singles chart so an ed greatest hits album would probably make occ banish them to the compilations chart within a few months of its release lol
faiyaz
oh my god don't even speak that into existence an ed sheeran greatest hits would never let another album go #1 again
Foxes
exactly why we need it 🥺 then occ would change the rules and we could get rid of greatest hits albums from the main chart
⁉️
we need teddy dominace though (on both the charts and me 😍😍😍😍)
🧡 oliviasnoodles 🍜
part of me thinks ed will release a “best of the mathematics era” compilation or sum like that as the saga’s coming to an end, and if that’s the case i hope it goes to number 1 and stays there so occ can consider it
faiyaz
LOLLLL the mathematics lesson
Blank
As much as I don't support such a change, a chart of just live, studio and remix albums would be interesting.
theRe@list
State of the charts sums up exactly what a mess the entire industry has become. Totally stale top 100 pretty much. How boring & sad that it’s turned into this. Best of old bands & Taylor Swift pretty much
D
Devastashun.
Agreed, how tiresome it is to see old acts like Elton John, ABBA and Fleetwood Mac clogging up the top 20 every week and denying new talent coming through and getting into the spotlight.
Blank
If that's what sells....it's up to the new acts to make something exciting and the labels to promote so that we know about it. It's been like this for a long time, so I'm doing the research to quantify it. Off the top of my head I can only think of less than 10 new releases in the last 3 years to last at least 30 weeks on chart - even fewer from debut artists. The only one of those I can think of is Olivia Rodrigo. Again, I'm doing the research to add the detail and to see if my anecotal knowledge is true. I also don't know if it's a particularly bad time for new acts or if it's always been this way.
D
Devastashun.
Thanks for the info David. That's very interesting actually.

What a strong hold for Metallica!
Carl Mefkintallica Foxall
After the dreadful Ellie Goulding dropped from number one to number eighty three last week, i'm glad that Metallica have only dropped from one to six
Lawrence Colwell
Makes you wonder how it ever went to number 1 then almost out the charts the following week, the crazy charts🙄
R
Revan
I prefer Ellie, at least she can sing, Metallica, while classic, cannot
theRe@list
That’s just weird. Must be artificially generated for it to fade that quick.
A
addickted2hcharlton
I like both meself on ere n I prefer Ellie to loss of them other autotuners dahn our gaff,

Having studied chart movements over the last 3 years in particular, it's not that rare. 2 or 3 #1 albums in 2021 dropped straight out of the top 75, some even out of the top 100. I studied the physical-era charts too, and that would never happen then. A #1 album was a more or less guarntee of at least one more week in the top 10, let alone full chart. Although a few did drop out before 5 weeks.
GagasPancakeT!ts
Can't believe the boring TS has eight albums in the top 100. The brainless sheeple strike again.
Carl Mefkintallica Foxall
But the O.C.C. have changed the rules when it comes to the singles chart with artists now allowed up to only three songs on the singles chart so that rule SHOULD apply to the albums chart too and they're STILL allowing tracks that haven't been released as singles to be on the singles chart
A
addickted2hcharlton
Iss shockin juss shockin but wot you get on ere nahadays.
faiyaz
obviously they are why wouldn't they😭
Damián
Finally we agree on something!!!!!!!
Blank
Because that would be artificial manipulation giving a false representation of what is genuinely popular in the UK.
Having at least 5 albums in the top 75 is not a drastically rare event, having been achieved on multiple occasions by Dire Straits, Jim Reeves, Bruce Springsteen, Bowie, Elvis, Michael Jackson to name a few. Dire Straits even had an average of 4 over the course of a whole year in 1986. 7 or more albums had been achieved on charts of various sizes on 23 occasions before 1992.
