It looks like Years & Years’ prayers will be answered this week as their debut album Communion has stormed into the lead on today’s Official Albums Chart Update.
The trio - who were one of a wave of acts who released their latest projects on New Music Friday, the global initiative to align the release day of new music around the world - are currently outselling the rest of the Top 10 combined with the record, which includes the hit songs Desire, Shine and Number 1 single King.
Meanwhile, last week’s Number 1, x, by Ed Sheeran is down to 2 and James Bay’s Chaos and the Calm jumps a place to Number 3.
Lionel Richie & The Commodores’ The Definitive Collection is at 4, while Taylor Swift’s 1989 completes the Top 5.
New entries and high climbers
US X Factor girl group, Fifth Harmony, could be scoring a Top 10 with their debut album Reflection this week, currently at 9, and Scottish synthpop band Prides debut at 14 with their first record The Way Back Up.
British metal band Cradle of Filth are on course to land their first UK Top 40 album this week with Hammer of the Witches, currently at Number 19 and Birdy’s Fire Within re-enters the Top 40 at 24. The folk singer’s track Wings is currently enjoying a resurgence on the Official Singles Chart thanks to a TV advert for Lloyds Bank.
Groove Armada start at 25 with their eighth album Little Black Book and electronic musician Four Tet is new at 30 with Morning/Evening.
Finally US punk-pop band R5 could earn their first Top 40 album with Sometime Last Night, currently at 33, while Little Boots third album Working Girl is at 40.
