Wonka named UK's most popular film of 2024, alongside Deadpool & Wolverine and Dune: Part Two
Timothée Chalamet dominates with two of the biggest films of the year in the UK.
Wonka has been named the most popular film of the 2024 in the UK, according to a new report by BASE using Official Charts data.
The multi-coloured musical extravaganza, starring Timothée Chalamet as a younger version of Willy Wonka, tops the Official Video Chart for 2024, coming out on top as the biggest film of the last year on physical purchases and streaming.
Serving as a prequel to the events in Roald Dahl's classic children's story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (and its two film adaptions, naturally), Wonka came with direction and a script from Paddington's Paul King, as well as original songs composed by The Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon.
Overall, in 2024, Wonka (which had a Christmas cinematic release in 2023) logged 821,000 transactions across digital and disk sales in the UK. It was clearly a big year for main stat Timothée Chalamet as his other box office tentpole, Dune: Part Two came not far behind at second place.
The acclaimed sequel to Dune: Part One, Denis Villenevue's second half of his adaption of Frank Herbet's monolithic first Dune novel (a foundational text for most modern sci-fi books and media) was a masterclass in how to construct both a crowd-pleasing blockbuster and an awe-inspiring meditation on myth-making, power and idolatry. The film also starred Zendaya, Austin Butler and Rebecca Ferguson.
Elsewhere, the long-awaited team-up of Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in...uh...Deadpool & Wolverine (hey, it does what it says on the tin) also proved to be a massive superhero crowd-pleaser last year. D&W, the first Deadpool film which was a canonical entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the first R-rated release on Marvel's schedule.
The space-bending road trip movie (also starring The Crown's Emma Corrin as the sinister Cassandra Nova and Dafne Keen, reprising her role as X-23 from 2017's acclaimed Logan) ends 2024 as the Number 1 most-downloaded film of the year in the UK.
According to BASE research, this last year was a massive one for the UK home entertainment video sector. In fact, in 2024 profits passed the £5 billion mark for the first time ever. A testament to just how much audiences will invest in watching films as soon as they release after a cinematic debut.
