Will Young Light It Up First Listen

With UK citizens exercising their democratic right to vote this week, we can but wait to find out if a positive decision has been made for the country.

We've arguably got it right before. On February 9 2002, over 13 million people saw Will Young crowned the winner of Pop Idol. Since then, he's earnt four UK Number 1 singles, a further seven Top 10s and four chart-topping albums.

Now, ahead of the release of his eighth studio LP Light It Up on August 9, Will delivers the record's title track - and he's only gone and given us a sneaky First Listen.

Light It Up sees Will team up with Scandi hitmakers PhD (Little Mix, Kylie Minogue) and British singer-songwriter Tom King on an uplifting statement of self-expression.

"I love the way that you strut when you step, 'cause it's who you are," Will sings atop a frisky piano intro. "And I love the skirts and the shirts that you wear, 'cause it's who you are."

From the off, Light It Up's a celebration of individuality, of originality. "Don't let them change you," Will commands.

Then comes the euphoric chorus over bouncy brass: "Light it up, let them know it. You’re too loud to be quiet, too bright now to stop glowing...Don’t waste who you are."

Light It Up marks one of the most carefree moments across Will's entire discography, with its springy '70s-influenced production making it a summer-ready, feel-good anthem.

Chatting about the track, Will says: "Light It Up is the most positive upbeat and fun song I’ve ever done. I can’t wait for people to be joyously uplifted by it and let all their worries float away."

Consider the brief fulfilled, Will.

Will Young's Light It Up is released July 5 via BMG. Light It Up the album will be released August 9.
