Streaming has continued to take off in a big way in 2016. Last year, the IFPI - the body which represents the music industry worldwide - revealed that the profits made from digital music overtook physical for the first time; and one of the major driving forces behind it was streaming (revenues from streaming were up by 45.2% on the previous year).

That means services like Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify and Tidal make up the industry's fastest growing revenue source, which is good news for an industry that was previously in decline for 20 years, but there is an underlying weakness to this recovery.

While music is now being consumed at record levels thanks to streaming, the benefits are not being felt by artists or record labels, resulting in a “value gap” which is depriving artists and labels of a fair return for their work.

The benefits and pitfalls of streaming were the subject of a talk at this year's International Music Summit, which takes place in Ibiza.

Hosted by the Association For Electronic Music's Mark Lawrence, industry experts including the founder of Beatport Matthew Adell and head of communications for Deezer Carolina Corsello discuss whether the music industry is in fact a better place with streaming.
