Topic brings more dance floor melancholy with new single Why Do You Lie To Me: First listen preview
It might just be a coincidence, but the timing of Topic’s global breakthrough with sad-banger Breaking Me as the world was in the middle of a pandemic-induced lockdown felt strangely on point.
However, long-time fans of the German/Croatian producer will know that melancholic, tears-on-the-dance-floor pop is in fact his signature style (his 2015 single Home is well worth a listen).
Following the massive success of Breaking Me, which hit the Top 10 in 22 countries including Number 3 on the UK’s Official Singles Chart, Topic is taking no chances on the follow-up. New single Why Do You Lie To Me, out this Friday (Aug. 28), is another slice of pensive dance-pop that, like its predecessor, sashays playfully on the line between wistful and euphoric.

Why Do You Lie To Me? sees Topic re-team with Breaking Me collaborator A7S, aka Swedish singer-songwriter Alexander Tidebrink, as well as US rapper Lil Baby. Both sing longingly about mixed feelings with a lover over Topic’s bassy and clubby production designed for dimly-lit dance floors.
Discussing the track, Topic said: “After having a global hit you might feel the whole world is watching you very closely when it comes to the follow-up single. Me personally, I just want to make high-quality music, which people can enjoy.
“I teamed up with A7S again for this single and having such a great artist as Lil Baby join us as a feature rounds it up perfectly. I had the track laying around for quite some time but something was missing. He gives it the rough touch it needed.”
