Top Gun: Maverick takes flight with huge Number 1 debut on Official Film Chart
Get ready to engage the boosters and take flight, because Top Gun: Maverick has made a daring flight to debut at Number 1 on the Official Film Chart.
The critically-acclaimed sequel to the classic 1986 action film re-unites leading man Tom Cruise with former on-screen buddy Val Kilmer, as well as a whole host of new blood to the franchise, including Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Glen Powell.
Following its release on digital platforms, Maverick makes a massive impact on the chart; securing the biggest Number 1 debut of 2022 so far, and one of the biggest on record in the history of the Official Film Chart.
And if that wasn’t enough, Top Gun itself rebounds to Number 3 on the chart, and a special combination package featuring the original and its sequel is another new entry this week at Number 8. All in all, it’s a Tom Cruise takeover.
Elsewhere, Dog Soldiers, a 2002 British action-horror starring Sean Pertwee and directed by future Games of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World director Neil Marshall, marks a new entry at Number 9, following a special re-release to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
And finally, former Number 1 hit Uncharted scales back up the chart, vaulting six places to crash back into the Top 10.
Elsewhere a real treat for movie fans is coming on Saturday 3 September, as cinemas across the UK will be offering everyone the chance of a cinema visit from just £3 under the banner of National Cinema Day.
Over 550 venues have signed up to participate in the event, including all of the major UK cinema operators and a wide range of smaller cinema operators and venues.
