To celebrate Record Store Day 2013, we reveal the Top 40 biggest selling albums from the UK’s independent record stores of the last 12 months.
Exactly one year ago this week, the Official Charts Company teamed up with Record Store Day to launch a brand new chart – the Official Record Store Chart, reflecting record sales through 100 of the UK’s coolest and most vibrant independent record shops.
On the eve of Record Store Day 2013, and to celebrate the chart’s first birthday, we can now unveil the Official Record Store Chart 2012-13 – the Top 20 biggest selling albums of the past year in the UK’s independent record shops.
Mumford & Sons, David Bowie and Jack White make the Top 5!
The Official Charts Company reveal Mumford & Sons’ Babel as the biggest selling artist album of the last 12 months in UK indie retailers.
Mumford & Sons found global success in 2012 as the band’s second album, Babel, hit Number 1 around the world including topping the UK’s Official Albums Chart and the US' Billboard Chart, amongst a string of other countries. Babel also became 2012’s fastest selling album on these shores after selling 159,000 copies in its opening week, according to Official Charts Company sales figures.
Babel takes the title of the biggest seller of the year on the Official Record Store Chart, ahead of Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events, which was 2012’s biggest seller across all retailers.
Jack White’s critically acclaimed Blunderbuss, The XX’s Coexist (2012’s biggest selling vinyl release) and Brit icon David Bowie’s The Next Day all rack up Top 5 placings on the best sellers list. See the Top 40 below...

About the Official Record Store Chart
The Official Record Store Chart is published every Sunday at 7pm at www.officialcharts.com, reflecting the cutting edge music purchased through independent record stores the length and breadth of the UK.
Counting purely physical sales, the panel surveys record shops including London’s Rough Trade, Sister Ray, Phonica, Manchester’s Piccadilly Records, Rise Records, Banquet Records (Kingston), Crash Records (Leeds), Spillers (Cardiff), Coda (Edinburgh), Rise (Bristol), Reflex (Newcastle), Head and many, many more!
Heart Your Local Record Shop!
To celebrate the nation’s record retailers, the Official Chart Company has also launched a new campaign for Record Store Day 2013 – under the tagline, 'Heart Your Local Record Shop'. Badges and stickers are being distributed through a selection of the UK’s biggest independent record shops tomorrow.
A vinyl word...
In 2012, vinyl sales across the board surged by more than 15% to 389,000, with sales now at their highest level since 2004. Q1 of 2013 has seen a further increase year on year of 78%.
It is worth noting that independent record shops accounted for 3% of all artist albums sold physically in the UK in 2012, however these indie retailers contributed to a disproportionate 38% of all vinyl album sales!
